[00:00:00] Paul Scheer: Don't die if you don't wanna live, or maybe just don't climb up a fricking tower. We saw Fall, so you know what that means.
[00:00:12] Music: [Intro Song]
[00:00:14] Paul Scheer: Hello, people of Earth, and welcome to How Did This Get Made? The year is 2022. The movie is Fall. What do you need to know? Well, basically, this is a survival thriller. We are continuing our summer of extreme by focusing on two best friends who are also rock climbing buddies, Becky and Hunter, who climb up a 2,000-foot-tall TV tower in the middle of the desert.
[00:00:42] Now, the climb, that was supposed to help Becky come to terms with the death of her husband, Dan, who dies in the opening scene very similarly to a movie that we just watched a few weeks ago, uh, in the opening scene. But after a series of mishaps, Becky and Hunter are stranded on top of the tower for the entire movie.
[00:01:02] And boy, oh boy, we have a lot to talk about. I am Paul Scheer, and I am joined by my two co-hosts, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael. How are you both?
[00:01:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. Uh, uh, you know, I, I really thought in this opening scene that this was gonna be a movie about rock climbers and, like, the first opening sequence is beautiful, rock climbing on a mountain-
[00:01:23] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:01:23] Jason Mantzoukas: And blah, blah, blah. And I was like, "Oh, this is what we're doing. Cool. Fun." And then the entirety of the movie takes place climbing a metal tower in the desert. And I was like, "What on earth is this now?"
[00:01:33] Paul Scheer: By the way, Jason, let me just correct you here. Not climbing a metal tower, at the top of it. They-
[00:01:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:01:37] Paul Scheer: The climbing happens very quickly.
[00:01:39] Jason Mantzoukas: You're absolutely right.
[00:01:40] Paul Scheer: The climbing of this movie is over.
[00:01:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:01:42] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, and that tower is so rusty.
[00:01:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:01:46] Paul Scheer: Too rusty.
[00:01:46] June Diane Raphael: I mean, I have so many questions about their choice of structure, but I guess we'll get into it. Yeah, I agree. Jason, the first, first few minutes... Well, first of all, I love the movie.
[00:01:57] Paul Scheer: Actually, I want to say that, too. I mean, this movie is trashy, but I kind of loved-
[00:02:02] June Diane Raphael: I enjoyed it.
[00:02:02] Paul Scheer: ... everything about it.
[00:02:03] June Diane Raphael: Enjoyed it quite a bit.
[00:02:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Here's what I'll say. It really... I- there are... And we'll get to them, but there are a number of things that happen in the last 20 minutes of the movie that made me like the movie quite a bit more than pr- Uh, like up until then, I w- I'm gonna just say it.
[00:02:21] Uh, uh, when she kills and eats the vulture-
[00:02:25] Paul Scheer: Oh, yeah.
[00:02:25] Jason Mantzoukas: ... I was like, "Oh, okay. Now this is the movie that I wish it had been the whole time."
[00:02:29] June Diane Raphael: Sure.
[00:02:29] Jason Mantzoukas: It is a very good tension-filled thriller.
[00:02:32] Paul Scheer: I'm in.
[00:02:33] Jason Mantzoukas: But it really gets bananas when she traps, kills, and eats a raw vulture in the wild.
[00:02:41] Paul Scheer: Well, they're trying to do so much in this movie. And look- I get it. Clearly this is a, a low budget movie and a great way to do a low budget movie. I've seen many people stuck at sea. The producers of this movie, I believe, did a film with two girls stuck in a shark cage in the middle of the ocean before this. Hmm. So
[00:03:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Wasn't there one that was about people stuck on a chairlift at some point?
[00:03:05] Paul Scheer: Oh, that's a great one with the wolves. Then there's the Blake Lively one where she's, like, on a-
[00:03:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, with sharks.
[00:03:09] Paul Scheer: ... like, a little... Yeah, the sharks.
[00:03:11] June Diane Raphael: Oh, yeah.
[00:03:12] Jason Mantzoukas: She's on a buoy.
[00:03:14] Paul Scheer: And what about the, the-
[00:03:14] Jason Mantzoukas: And I think Baldoni comes and saves her.
[00:03:18] Paul Scheer: What about the other one where the-
[00:03:18] Jason Mantzoukas: No, is that the wrong... Is that the d- Is that a different movie?
[00:03:20] June Diane Raphael: No, that's it.
[00:03:21] Jason Mantzoukas: That's the movie, right?
[00:03:21] Paul Scheer: He was cut out of it, though.
[00:03:22] Jason Mantzoukas: He was cut out.
[00:03:23] Paul Scheer: He was cut out of it for being a little weird. Uh, now, I'll tell you this much, and, uh, this is a... I, I actually really like the actresses in this. Virginia Gardner, we know her from Beautiful Disaster and Beautiful Wedding, uh, that, that little series that we did.
[00:03:36] June Diane Raphael: By the way, I didn't put that together, though, right away.
[00:03:38] Jason Mantzoukas: I didn't either.
[00:03:39] Paul Scheer: Yeah. I, I was like, "How do I know her?"
[00:03:41] June Diane Raphael: And she's... I think she is fantastic.
[00:03:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Terrific. Love her.
[00:03:45] Paul Scheer: I love her.
[00:03:45] June Diane Raphael: I, and I was watching this, and I was like, "Okay, this is so crazy that the other one is following her into this." And then I was like, "She's so cute. She's so convincing. She got those pigtails." I was like, "I think I might do the same thing."
[00:03:58] Paul Scheer: Whoa.
[00:03:58] June Diane Raphael: If that... If Virginia Gardner was looking at you and delivering those lines, Paul-
[00:04:03] Jason Mantzoukas: I would, I would climb a tower.
[00:04:05] June Diane Raphael: ... I bet you would cl- That's what I'm saying.
[00:04:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Absolutely.
[00:04:06] June Diane Raphael: I bet you- you would both climb a tower
[00:04:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Wearing that push-up bra- then let's go. We're climbing. And I will say, this is definitely something as a young person I would have thought, "I can do that." Like, I, c- climbing things was something I felt very like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. I'll climb that ladder over..." You know, like, that seemed to me-
[00:04:27] June Diane Raphael: But you know what I, you know what I wished though, Jason? 'Cause I felt the same thing. Like, I could do... There's nothing I, that they did that I don't feel I'm capable of, but to me-
[00:04:37] Paul Scheer: Wow, really? Both of you? Okay, interesting.
[00:04:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.
[00:04:40] Paul Scheer: I mean, I like the idea of it.
[00:04:40] June Diane Raphael: Well, yeah, I hate heights, but I also felt like there wasn't any... They didn't-
[00:04:45] Paul Scheer: You really hate heights.
[00:04:45] June Diane Raphael: I really hate heights, but so I wouldn't like it, but I would do it. But I also felt like there's no, we never got to see any skill.
[00:04:53] Jason Mantzoukas: No.
[00:04:53] Paul Scheer: No, because they're climbing a ladder.
[00:04:56] Jason Mantzoukas: No, yeah.
[00:04:56] Paul Scheer: The majority of this movie is climbing a ladder. I mean, the opening sequence, I have no faith in them as climbers.
[00:05:02] June Diane Raphael: No.
[00:05:02] Paul Scheer: 'Cause like when Becky is stuck on the rock face, her husband's like, "Just jump into my arms." And I'm like, "That's not safe."
[00:05:10] June Diane Raphael: That can't be right.
[00:05:12] Jason Mantzoukas: That wouldn't work at all.
[00:05:14] Paul Scheer: "We're not doing that."
[00:05:14] Jason Mantzoukas: That would not work at all.
[00:05:14] Paul Scheer: And everyone-
[00:05:14] June Diane Raphael: And by the way, though, but he, I'm not saying he deserved to die. Well, first of all, you know what?
[00:05:19] Paul Scheer: Wow, you sound like Jeffrey Dean Morgan now.
[00:05:20] June Diane Raphael: I, but you know what? Anyone who goes up there to do this type of thing, it's very hard to have that much sympathy for.
[00:05:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:05:30] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:05:30] June Diane Raphael: You know? This whole thing of like, "You've gotta face your fears. Do not let fear win. Punch fear in the dick." All this stuff, I'm like, "But fear keeps us alive."
[00:05:41] Paul Scheer: You don't have to.
[00:05:42] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, no. Fear keeps us on the ground. There's no reason other than Virginia Gardner asking you to that you have to do any of this stuff.
[00:05:48] Jason Mantzoukas: Agreed. Well- And not only that, but like what I never quite understood was, um, not Virginia Gardner, but w- Becky.
[00:05:56] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:05:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Becky, our ma- the, our main character who, who loses everything and everyone, uh, for the most part. Um, Becky, though, Becky's, Becky doesn't really seem to... Like, I'll be honest, I think that, um, Virginia Gardner and Dan belong together.
[00:06:14] Paul Scheer: I agree. I feel like I've, I feel like Becky-
[00:06:17] June Diane Raphael: Same ...
[00:06:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Becky and Dan are a bad match because I don't think Becky wants to be there.
[00:06:21] Paul Scheer: I think that Becky is not a climber.
[00:06:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Becky doesn't have the same... Yeah, she doesn't seem to have the same, uh, passion and drive even prior to Dan's death, I mean. Obviously, po- post Dan's death, she's, she's reeling and she's questioning every- everything and it, but, and so forth. But even beforehand on the mountain face, she seems nervous and anxious and all the things you can't be if you're a climber at that level, you know?
[00:06:46] Paul Scheer: Yeah. It feels to me like Dan, her, her dead, uh, husband- kind of, like, met her on a weekend trip. B- and then he's like, "Oh, that's my love." And, and, you know, and that's why I feel like Becky was okay kind of having this affair, because everyone knew it. I mean, even the dad knows it. It's pretty harsh- It's- ... in the movie when you cut to 51 weeks later.
[00:07:08] Not 52, but 51 weeks later. Yeah. Uh, and, and Becky is, you know, in a downward alcohol spiral, and her husband's like, "He's not a martyr." Je- I'm like, Jesus, man. Like her husband did die. Like, he didn't seem like an asshole, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan, like really-
[00:07:25] June Diane Raphael: You don't think he knew though that-
[00:07:27] Paul Scheer: You think he knew?
[00:07:29] June Diane Raphael: I think he had a clue, yeah.
[00:07:30] Jason Mantzoukas: I don't th- I don't know that he knew that they were cheating, but what's definitely clear, and the movie tells us, because every single picture that Becky looks at on her phone, someone is in the background of that picture revealing their true feelings. So in s-
[00:07:47] June Diane Raphael: By the way-
[00:07:48] Jason Mantzoukas: All Becky needs to do-
[00:07:49] June Diane Raphael: Look alive when a camera comes out.
[00:07:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:07:50] June Diane Raphael: Look alive. You never know. You never know. You never know what people are gonna catch.
[00:07:54] Paul Scheer: You cannot get-
[00:07:55] June Diane Raphael: And zoom, zoom-
[00:07:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Every time.
[00:07:56] June Diane Raphael: ... zoom, enhance, enhance, enhance ...
[00:07:57] Jason Mantzoukas: you know, Becky's looking at the camera at, at, at, at her wedding video and there's, um, Hunter in the background, um, l- just like looking so lovingly at Dan. And then in ano- like an hour later she's looking at pictures and her dad is in the background at the wedding looking, d- staring daggers at Dan, you know?
[00:08:17] June Diane Raphael: Look alive. Stay ready ...
[00:08:19] Paul Scheer: As an audience member, at a, as an audience member we are We are tr- like we are having... I, I had a hard time digesting that, uh, Mason Gooding, who is, is Dan, was a bad guy. 'Cause we have no- nothing to lead us to believe that before he dies, and it's a harsh way to introduce these characters. But I guess maybe everyone was right and.
[00:08:37] June Diane Raphael: Uh- But babe, you know, yeah, you never know ...
[00:08:39] Paul Scheer: Can I just say-
[00:08:39] June Diane Raphael: I mean, listen. Go ahead.
[00:08:41] Paul Scheer: Well, and this has nothing to do with her acting, 'cause I like Grace, uh, Carolyn Curry, who plays Becky.
[00:08:47] Very good. But the entire time I was like, "Why, why do I know her? Why do I know her?" Mm. And I'm like, sh- "Oh, she looks like Tilly Norwood," the face of, like, the most beautiful AI actress.
[00:08:57] Jason Mantzoukas: The AI actress?
[00:08:58] Paul Scheer: And I looked at it and I was like, "Oh, my..." And not, not, this is not performance. This is just based on looks. And I was like, "Is she the perfect face?" 'Cause I think-
[00:09:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, wow.
[00:09:07] Paul Scheer: ... they look, when you look at them together-
[00:09:09] June Diane Raphael: There's a, there is a similarity ...
[00:09:10] Paul Scheer: There is a similarity. There... And I was like, "Maybe, maybe we've been incepted. This is a BuzzFeed movie." Is this the first testing-
[00:09:18] June Diane Raphael: Oh, no.
[00:09:19] Paul Scheer: ... of Tilly Norwood?
[00:09:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, wait, this is a BuzzFeed? What are you talking about?
[00:09:21] Paul Scheer: Oh, first, first credit that came up, BuzzFeed.
[00:09:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, I, I fast-forwarded through that.
[00:09:24] June Diane Raphael: I didn't see that.
[00:09:25] Paul Scheer: Oh, yeah.
[00:09:26] June Diane Raphael: Well, I thought that some of the photography in the beginning especially was beautiful. You know, it's, it's hard though. Again, I go back to the skill, the skill of rock climbing because... now, first of all, I don't know what ran out of that little hole that Dan-
[00:09:41] Paul Scheer: Little owl.
[00:09:42] June Diane Raphael: Oh, it was a little owl?
[00:09:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, some sort of, some type of bird.
[00:09:44] June Diane Raphael: A baby owl? Oh, terrifying.
[00:09:46] Paul Scheer: Oh, Scott, our producer, is saying bats. Bats. I thought it had fur.
[00:09:48] Jason Mantzoukas: Bats.
[00:09:49] June Diane Raphael: I thought it was basically- I thought it had fur, too. I thought it looked like a gremlin.
[00:09:51] Jason Mantzoukas: It looked like there were feathers.
[00:09:52] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:09:53] Jason Mantzoukas: I thought there were feathers around, so I thought it was a nest.
[00:09:54] Paul Scheer: You know what? I thought it was a ghoulie. Guys, remember the ghoulie?
[00:09:57] Jason Mantzoukas: You thought it was a ghoulie?
[00:09:58] Paul Scheer: I don't know.
[00:09:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I think they come out of toilets, don't they?
[00:10:00] Paul Scheer: Well, that's a, the, that part of the-
[00:10:01] June Diane Raphael: But let me ask this.
[00:10:01] Paul Scheer: That's the toilet of the mountain, that hole.
[00:10:03] June Diane Raphael: No, let me ask this. I don't know... Again, I'm not blaming this on hi- his death on... Well, am I? I, he didn't seem to put the, the stake in correctly.
[00:10:15] Paul Scheer: June this distinct.
[00:10:16] June Diane Raphael: If he could fall so easily, it didn't even, like-
[00:10:20] Jason Mantzoukas: He was playing fast and loose with those placements
[00:10:22] June Diane Raphael: Thank you. It's like it didn't even hold for a second. First of all, thank God that they weren't attached to each other.
[00:10:28] Paul Scheer: They're always attached to each other, though, in this movie. Oh. Like, and when they're climbing up the tower, they're attached to each other. But I mean, but I feel like you're right, like she asks him, like, "Give me more slack," and he, she cuts out his slack to give him more room to kinda attach himself to the rock face. But it seems like I don't know. They're, they seem-
[00:10:47] June Diane Raphael: I don't know what happened there.
[00:10:48] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:10:48] June Diane Raphael: Because she didn't fall.
[00:10:50] Paul Scheer: Yeah, I guess you're right. So maybe there is good rock climbing here. I didn't like the rock climbing on the tower because it just seemed like the rope was attached to the one above them. Like, it just seemed like they were-
[00:10:59] Jason Mantzoukas: That's all, that is what it was.
[00:11:00] Paul Scheer: So they were just two people attached by one rope?
[00:11:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:11:02] June Diane Raphael: They were never attached to the structure-
[00:11:05] Jason Mantzoukas: What I couldn't ever figure out-
[00:11:07] June Diane Raphael: ... I don't think ...
[00:11:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, they were never clipping into the tower. Which made no sense.
[00:11:09] June Diane Raphael: No sense to me.
[00:11:11] Paul Scheer: No sense.
[00:11:11] June Diane Raphael: No sense to me.
[00:11:12] Jason Mantzoukas: You know, like, they, and it's like-
[00:11:13] June Diane Raphael: Even when they were sleeping and stuff, I was like, "Anybody wanna clip in?"
[00:11:16] Jason Mantzoukas: W- exactly. Exactly.
[00:11:18] June Diane Raphael: You, we know Grace-
[00:11:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Tie yourself down.
[00:11:20] June Diane Raphael: We know that she's an active sleeper.
[00:11:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Very.
[00:11:24] June Diane Raphael: Becky. Like, anyone wanna clip in?
[00:11:27] Paul Scheer: Why did she wake up with blood in her bed? Her nightmare was, like, that her husband's with her-
[00:11:31] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:11:31] Paul Scheer: And then, and she looks up, "Ah." Like, is it, like, his dead body fell into the bed? Like, it, like, you don't picture him as bloody, I don't think.
[00:11:38] Jason Mantzoukas: I, yeah, and the blood seemed to be on her.
[00:11:42] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:11:42] Jason Mantzoukas: And I was like, wait, is she... When was she bleeding like this? I couldn't figure that out either. Or was that just the blood of her... oh, 'cause had she had the leg injury by then? I don't know. I couldn't-
[00:11:51] June Diane Raphael: No, she didn't.
[00:11:51] Paul Scheer: No, she didn't have the leg injury.
[00:11:51] Jason Mantzoukas: This was before. She didn't by then, okay.
[00:11:54] June Diane Raphael: And maybe she felt blood was on her hands.
[00:11:56] Paul Scheer: Oh, but then it would've been on her hands.
[00:11:59] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh. I like that, though.
[00:11:59] Paul Scheer: I would've liked blood on her hands.
[00:12:01] June Diane Raphael: I don't know.
[00:12:01] Paul Scheer: But not on her sheets. I've never heard you have blood on your sheets.
[00:12:04] June Diane Raphael: First of all, here's, here was our, here was our-
[00:12:06] Paul Scheer: Well, I mean, I have heard that, but not for the same reasons ...
[00:12:08] June Diane Raphael: Paul. Here's, here's where I think we had a major red flag about Dan. Why couldn't he say, "I love you"?
[00:12:18] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, they're married.
[00:12:21] June Diane Raphael: No, listen, I also don't-
[00:12:21] Paul Scheer: He said it in the nautical way, which is more romantic.
[00:12:24] Jason Mantzoukas: They're married.
[00:12:24] June Diane Raphael: No, it's not.
[00:12:25] Paul Scheer: The nautical way is much more romantic. Have you ever said I love you? I would never say it. Do it nautically, that's harder. Morse code's harder.
[00:12:33] June Diane Raphael: And also, this here's the thing, and I guess this is just getting older. And I guess it is getting older, you know? But I looked at them, I'm like, "But they're so young. Why are they married?" Did anyone else think that? Am I just getting older?
[00:12:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, ab- absolutely.
[00:12:45] June Diane Raphael: I'm like, "Why are these children married? They're so young."
[00:12:46] Jason Mantzoukas: People being afraid to say I love you feels like it's from the 1950s.
[00:12:52] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:12:53] June Diane Raphael: Yes.
[00:12:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Feels like men, men being afraid to admit-
[00:12:55] June Diane Raphael: Yes.
[00:12:55] Jason Mantzoukas: ... not a, I'm gonna say 25-year-old man in 2022, like that-
[00:13:00] Paul Scheer: Who's married.
[00:13:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Who's married. You know? Like, I, I don't feel as though that is... That reeks to me of the middle-aged man who wrote this script.
[00:13:09] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Well, right, and it's also like to me-
[00:13:11] June Diane Raphael: It's just strange though.
[00:13:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, the, all of the pe- all of the people saying the word hashtag out loud also reeked to me of- ... some, somebody older writing this script.
[00:13:21] Paul Scheer: Or, or a Buzzfeed executive being like, "We need more hashtags in this movie."
[00:13:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:13:24] Paul Scheer: Put more hashtags in there. Put, put a list of the best things to bring on your camping trip. Well, here's my thought, and maybe this is just the way that I think, but if this guy is cheating on her, I would be saying I love you all the time.
[00:13:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:13:37] Paul Scheer: Because you gotta cover your tracks a little bit.
[00:13:39] June Diane Raphael: Interesting Paul.
[00:13:39] Paul Scheer: I wouldn't be, I wouldn't be-
[00:13:41] June Diane Raphael: Interesting.
[00:13:42] Paul Scheer: But I wouldn't be, like, being coy about it, 'cause that would open up questions, right?
[00:13:47] Jason Mantzoukas: But also, like, what a... This guy, what this fucking dick, he's having an affair on his wife, and he brings, like, with her best friend. And the-
[00:13:56] June Diane Raphael: He is a dick.
[00:13:57] Jason Mantzoukas: ... three of them alone go and climb some incredibly difficult, challenging mountain face. Like, I was like, what is this about? This guy is abso-
[00:14:07] Paul Scheer: Do you think they were trying to kill her?
[00:14:09] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, I guess he is an adrenaline junkie. No, I think-
[00:14:10] June Diane Raphael: There was one point, though, where I did think Hunter's gonna murder Becky up there.
[00:14:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Ooh. Wait, on the tower or on the mountain?
[00:14:19] June Diane Raphael: Yes. I was like, she's brought her up there, and we're gonna find out that she also murdered Dan.
[00:14:24] Paul Scheer: Oh.
[00:14:24] June Diane Raphael: I felt we were close to that at one point.
[00:14:26] Paul Scheer: I have one, uh, just... Well, one little thing I wanna bring up here, too. Just as, um, uh- Yeah, as we're, we're talking about the opening of the movie, there's a couple questions I had about Becky, and I feel like she's made a bunch of bad decisions, right?
[00:14:41] June Diane Raphael: Hmm.
[00:14:41] Paul Scheer: Not just only to climb this tower with a stranger, all this sort of stuff. Um, why-
[00:14:45] June Diane Raphael: That's not a stranger. That's her best friend.
[00:14:46] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, it's her best friend.
[00:14:47] Paul Scheer: Is it her b- is it her best friend? I mean, 'cause I would... In my mind, I would say that Dan and, uh, Shiloh should have been best friends, and then Becky came into it. But it seems like Shiloh and Becky are best friends, and Dan came into their relationship. Is that what we're trying to believe? I mean, I'm just... D- if I like-
[00:15:02] June Diane Raphael: Ugh, unclear.
[00:15:03] Paul Scheer: Okay.
[00:15:03] June Diane Raphael: It did seem like... I'd like to call her Hunter, Paul.
[00:15:07] Paul Scheer: Okay, sorry.
[00:15:07] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm, I'm gonna c- I'm, sorry, I'm gonna call her Danger D. I, I mean, just because I'm a, I'm a, a, I'm an OG subscriber to her channel.
[00:15:16] Paul Scheer: I'm just gonna call her Cherry Pie because she is-
[00:15:17] Jason Mantzoukas: R- R.I.P. a legend.
[00:15:19] June Diane Raphael: Cherry Pie.
[00:15:20] Paul Scheer: I'm gonna call her Cherry Pie 'cause she's my cherry pie. Uh-
[00:15:23] June Diane Raphael: Ew.
[00:15:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Again, another thing that reminded me that a middle-aged person wrote this script- ... is that the re- the recurring song is Warrant's Cherry Pie.
[00:15:33] June Diane Raphael: I, here's what I wanted to know about Dan. The lingering question for me is when Becky says something where they're sort of memorializing him up there, Hunter's crying after they, they, they threw off the ashes, and then Becky says something like, "Yeah, Dan, he's always telling those shit jokes." And I was like, are they saying that he was telling shitty jokes?
[00:15:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:15:58] Paul Scheer: Oh, I felt like shit-
[00:15:59] June Diane Raphael: I don't know ...
[00:16:00] Paul Scheer: I thought.
[00:16:00] June Diane Raphael: She was saying- cause people in America don't speak that way. Yes, that's like a very British-
[00:16:04] Paul Scheer: Like shit jokes, like he does, like, poo-poo jokes.
[00:16:05] Jason Mantzoukas: It is, I agree. But wasn't there another instance where they were making fun of his, like, dad jokes? I, I thought, yeah.
[00:16:10] June Diane Raphael: So you're just saying they're bad, they were bad jokes. He wasn't actually telling sh- jokes about shit.
[00:16:15] Jason Mantzoukas: I don't think so, but I might be-
[00:16:17] Paul Scheer: I would like him more as a character if he did sh- did only, like, poo-poo shit jokes.
[00:16:21] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, one of my big notes on the movie was- ... because there's a huge chunk of the movie, act two is kind of inert in a lot of ways.
[00:16:30] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:16:30] Jason Mantzoukas: There's a lot of, like, either not much is happening or failed attempts at things that don't amount to much. And I was like, "Oh, I wish we were in here having more flashbacks." More flashbacks that give us more insight into... 'Cause when, when the cheating was revealed, I was like, oh, I like this. This is an interesting, like, uh-
[00:16:49] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:16:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, thing to insert here. Now there's this, this mystery we're uncovering. Becky's unraveling this, this betrayal, uh, from Danger Dee and Dan, of course. Um, and I was like, oh, I would have n- I, uh, we see it in those, like I said before, pictures-
[00:17:05] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:17:06] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Where you see, oh, uh, uh, Hunter's lurking in the background or whatever. But I would have loved f- uh, flashbacks that fleshed out that story because so little was happening on the tower.
[00:17:17] Paul Scheer: Right, 'cause you do feel like, uh, you feel like, well, what else could possibly happen on a small platform? And they have to invent certain things. 'Cause there's moments where, like, you know, v- where, like, Becky thinks, "Oh, is Hunter dead?" But I'm like, you really have to suspend your disbelief. They are on a tower. It's, it's, like, pretty much transparent. You know, you can see through everything. And she's like, "Is she okay? Is she okay?" It's like, well, just look. You can look. You can... You, you would hear it, you would see it, you would... It's already-
[00:17:43] June Diane Raphael: Well, she's hallucinating though, babe.
[00:17:46] Paul Scheer: Well, yeah. Well, that's later. I'm just saying, like-
[00:17:47] June Diane Raphael: Oh. Oh, I see what you're saying.
[00:17:48] Paul Scheer: ... in the first kind of moments where she's like, oh, you know, she's, she's not... It's like, well, you can see what's going on. You, there's nothing...
[00:17:53] June Diane Raphael: here's my question about what they... I understand what you're saying, Jason. I actually really... I enjoyed the movie. I thought, like-
[00:18:00] Paul Scheer: I did too.
[00:18:01] June Diane Raphael: ... Oh, this is paced... Well, well, I didn't think it was paced perfectly, but there were things happening that I didn't expect necessarily. But my main question... Well, first- The egg drop challenge. Now, Paul and I are both, both of our children have competed... they compete annually in the egg drop challenge. Now, granted, they're not dropping from that height.
[00:18:21] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, no?
[00:18:22] Paul Scheer: It's about a thousand feet lower. Just a thousand feet lower.
[00:18:24] Jason Mantzoukas: They're not, they're not climbing 2,600 feet in the air?
[00:18:29] June Diane Raphael: But I did... If I were them, what I would have fashioned is... First of all, that, that phone needed way more padding, but I would have taken one of our shirts and fashioned some sort of a parachute.
[00:18:44] Jason Mantzoukas: How would you do a, how would you do a parachute?
[00:18:47] June Diane Raphael: W- well, I would try to attach it to both-
[00:18:52] Paul Scheer: Now we're talking about a lot of structural engineering here.
[00:18:54] June Diane Raphael: ... tie tight, ti- tightly enough to that shoe that it would catch air, and so land a little bit more gently.
[00:19:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Now, if you could-
[00:19:03] June Diane Raphael: Okay, can I also ask why they didn't try this?
[00:19:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:19:06] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:19:07] June Diane Raphael: If I'm them and I'm facing certain death-
[00:19:10] Paul Scheer: Got it ...
[00:19:11] June Diane Raphael: Okay, we've exhausted all other options. Let's say the drone has already happened. What I'm gonna then do is I'm gonna take that rope And I'm gonna tie it around both of us, okay? Okay. Around our bodies, and we are going to shimmy down that pole together with the rope.
[00:19:30] Paul Scheer: Wait, so you wanna have-
[00:19:33] June Diane Raphael: And we only have 50- We're gonna hold our arms around the rope.
[00:19:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay.
[00:19:35] June Diane Raphael: Okay? We're both at, we're both holding the rope.
[00:19:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Right.
[00:19:38] June Diane Raphael: But we are using the tension of it to slowly shimmy our way.
[00:19:43] Paul Scheer: Wait, wait. So you're, you're making-
[00:19:43] June Diane Raphael: We're not attached to anything. I'm not making this not dangerous.
[00:19:46] Paul Scheer: Okay. So you're... Wait, so you... Wait, hold on. I, I, first of all, I hope we have some sort of a graphic designer out there who can draw these, uh, mock-ups here. So you're saying that you're creating, like, a, a life r- uh, like a life raft structure. Like, your bodies are connected by the hands and the shirt, and you are-
[00:20:02] June Diane Raphael: Well, our... well, well you could just use the f- the rope is 50 feet. Okay. Just use the rope to... Well, you could put it around our back, but you can also, we can hold onto the rope on each side. You're on the other side- So you're saying, like- ... also holding onto the rope.
[00:20:16] Jason Mantzoukas: And, and leaning back- And you're using your feet? ... on the rope with your feet on the pole?
[00:20:20] June Diane Raphael: Yes, and we're shimmying down.
[00:20:21] Paul Scheer: Well, that's... I mean, that's 1,000 feet. So, uh, but how do you not slip?
[00:20:24] June Diane Raphael: I'm not saying it's perfect.
[00:20:26] Paul Scheer: You go right down.
[00:20:28] Jason Mantzoukas: I think it would be hard.
[00:20:28] Paul Scheer: It would be really hard.
[00:20:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Here's my first move. Here's my f- I love, by the way, and I'd love for everybody to weigh in on how would you have dealt with this?
[00:20:35] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:20:35] Jason Mantzoukas: First move, unscrew the red light bulb. First move.
[00:20:40] Paul Scheer: Well, I'm gonna talk about that light bulb in a second.
[00:20:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Somebody's gotta notice. Yeah. Somebody's gotta notice. That was...
[00:20:43] Paul Scheer: I wrote that down.
[00:20:44] Jason Mantzoukas: That's for airplanes.
[00:20:45] Paul Scheer: Yes. The first thing-
[00:20:46] Jason Mantzoukas: That's to protect airplanes, so somebody's gonna notice that light is not working anymore.
[00:20:50] Paul Scheer: First move.
[00:20:50] Jason Mantzoukas: And so maybe-
[00:20:51] Paul Scheer: I agree.
[00:20:52] Jason Mantzoukas: ... maybe somebody will attend to that, you know?
[00:20:53] Paul Scheer: And by the way, can I just say this as you're talking about that?
[00:20:55] June Diane Raphael: No, that's a good, that's a good thought, Jason.
[00:20:56] Paul Scheer: It's not... There's no way in hell that is a light bulb that was at the top of that. That is a fucking light bulb. It's, it's- That is like-
[00:21:04] Jason Mantzoukas: And it's, like, a 60 watt incandescent bulb.
[00:21:08] Paul Scheer: I've never seen anything as dumb as that. Like, I'm, I'm in on this movie- ... but when she unscrewed a regular fucking, like, three dim light bulb.
[00:21:17] Jason Mantzoukas: I have, I have heavier duty light bulbs in, like, the outside lighting at my home.
[00:21:23] Paul Scheer: And no one's gone up there in such a long time. That thing is, that building is abandoned-
[00:21:27] June Diane Raphael: Right, right.
[00:21:27] Paul Scheer: For years, so you tell me that light bulb-
[00:21:28] Jason Mantzoukas: It looks like a light bulb that goes into a Christmas candle light that you put in the window of your house at the holidays. It is hilarious.
[00:21:36] Paul Scheer: That was so tiny.
[00:21:38] Jason Mantzoukas: But yeah, that's my first move. My first move is to cut that light-
[00:21:42] June Diane Raphael: Smart.
[00:21:42] Jason Mantzoukas: ... And, and figure out if somebody will notice that. And, and I, the, the... I couldn't figure out. I really enjoyed the presence of the binoculars and the flare gun.
[00:21:53] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:21:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Because that... But that- Assumes that people have said, "Somebody's gonna get stuck up here."
[00:21:59] June Diane Raphael: Okay, that's what I actually... Here's who I also wanna hear from, anyone who does that level of, like-
[00:22:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, we've seen this recently.
[00:22:06] June Diane Raphael: Maintenance work. Where, when?
[00:22:08] Jason Mantzoukas: We've seen this recently.
[00:22:09] Paul Scheer: On Netflix.
[00:22:09] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm sor- Not on, not, not... We've seen this recently. I'm sorry, you're right, Paul. Alex Honnold, free solo, just climbed a building. Oh. But also, two people just, um, scaled, uh, another building and got engaged to each other at the top of some-
[00:22:24] Paul Scheer: Oh, on Empire State Building, right?
[00:22:24] June Diane Raphael: I know that that's happened. Yeah. I'm talking about, I know that that has happened on Empire State Building.
[00:22:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, okay.
[00:22:29] June Diane Raphael: Yes, of course, Alex what's-his-face, but I'm talking about your... There are ladders, okay? There's, these- Yes ... we're talking about places that are not meant to be scaled. I'm talking about the, um, flare gun and the binoculars. That's just for regular maintenance workers.
[00:22:45] Jason Mantzoukas: I guess so.
[00:22:45] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:22:45] Jason Mantzoukas: But why would they need binoculars?
[00:22:47] June Diane Raphael: I don't know. That's what I-
[00:22:48] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:22:48] June Diane Raphael: ... that's what, who I wanna hear from. I know. Is just like-
[00:22:50] Paul Scheer: Well, maybe the binoculars, I mean, look, I, I think it's like, it's a catbird seat. It's at the top. You know, it's like, to me, I'm like give as ma- There should be as many tools as you need up there, right? Like, I mean, truly, it's like if you're climbing all the way up there, it's-
[00:23:01] June Diane Raphael: But, babe, a flare gun implies that, like, you need rescuing.
[00:23:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:23:08] Paul Scheer: Well, what, what, there, there you go. I mean, but what, but.
[00:23:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Maybe you could. May- maybe the worker might need rescuing. I don't know. But like-
[00:23:14] Paul Scheer: Is there a flare gun at the top of the Empire State Building? I wanna figure it out.
[00:23:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, who's coming, who's gonna go do this big event with a f- like a not fully charged drone? Come on.
[00:23:24] June Diane Raphael: And, and can I ask, could they tell anyone they were going?
[00:23:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, uh, you know what it was also giving me? It was, it was reminding me of 127 Hours-
[00:23:34] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:23:35] Jason Mantzoukas: ... in a way that I was like, "Oh, I wish that this had been, even as a lie, at the beginning based on a true story."
[00:23:41] June Diane Raphael: Me too.
[00:23:42] Paul Scheer: Uh, by the way, I, I'm gonna also just say that these people don't make good choices. I, I already know that our, our hero, Becky, doesn't make a good choice. She hasn't canceled, uh, Dan's cellphone plan. It's been a year. Cancel that stuff. You're just paying all that extra money for a cellphone plan.
[00:23:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, no, I, I got that. That makes sense to me.
[00:23:58] June Diane Raphael: I understood that call.
[00:23:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I think I would do that forever.
[00:24:00] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:24:00] Paul Scheer: Oh, come on. It's a, it's an expense you don't need. Um, let's be-
[00:24:04] Jason Mantzoukas: But you know what? But you know what I'm surprised at?
[00:24:07] Paul Scheer: What?
[00:24:07] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm surprised that over these 51 weeks, um, Danger D., uh, Hunter, has not been calling, uh, Dan's phone to hear his voice talk to them.
[00:24:20] Paul Scheer: Well, this is what I was gonna say. Interesting. What if she called and checked the messages and-
[00:24:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:24:24] Paul Scheer: ... and one was from-
[00:24:25] Jason Mantzoukas: And Becky saw it. Ooh. Oh, oh, oh, you're saying if Becky just checked his messages from Hunter, absolutely.
[00:24:30] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:24:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, uh, you're telling me Becky hasn't gone through that phone in the last 51 weeks?
[00:24:35] June Diane Raphael: I... Oh, that's a really good point. But here-
[00:24:37] Paul Scheer: Maybe the phone was on his body, and this is just the voicemail.
[00:24:38] June Diane Raphael: Here's the thing. That's possible. But here's the thing. The only question I had about Becky's grief was why, why was she keeping that box of cremated ashes on her kitchen table with her keys strewn over it?
[00:24:52] Paul Scheer: Yeah, the FedEx box with dust.
[00:24:53] June Diane Raphael: That felt disrespectful.
[00:24:55] Paul Scheer: Well, there's one line here- ... that Hunter says, and I was like, "Even as a friend I'm having a hard time swallowing this line." She goes, "The only thing that drives me nuts is that box of ashes collecting dust." I'm like , "That's a very specific thing to be driving you nuts, especially since he's never been-"
[00:25:13] June Diane Raphael: There's things... There are lines when, when Becky says to... When she notices a picture of her looking so happy, well, I think we'll find out later that it's because she was with Hunter, was with Dan. But she says to her, she goes, "Oh, I wonder who that guy is. He sure knows how to tickle your whistle." Ew.
[00:25:31] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:25:32] June Diane Raphael: Ew.
[00:25:32] Paul Scheer: What, wouldn't it be like whistle your, wet your whistle, but tickle your whistle? I mean, what-
[00:25:36] June Diane Raphael: Tickle your whistle?
[00:25:37] Paul Scheer: I mean, is that like a fingering joke?
[00:25:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Is it possible that this-
[00:25:39] June Diane Raphael: I don't know what that is.
[00:25:40] Jason Mantzoukas: Script was written by like a-
[00:25:42] June Diane Raphael: Tilly Norwood?
[00:25:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Like a, yes. Or, or a, like- ... a middle-aged foreign man?
[00:25:48] June Diane Raphael: Do you think Tilly Norwood both wrote it and cast it?
[00:25:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Is this... Honest question, is this a Tilly Norwood production?
[00:25:55] Paul Scheer: This could all be Tilly. We could all find out that this is-
[00:25:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Is this from Norwood Industries?
[00:25:59] June Diane Raphael: I just, here's the question I have about Hunter, and this is why I do think Hunter's a psychopath. And again, I would follow her onto this pole.
[00:26:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Loved it.
[00:26:05] June Diane Raphael: But she doesn't do a bit of resea- I guess this is why they're both bad climbers.
[00:26:11] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:26:11] June Diane Raphael: A bit of research about this structure.
[00:26:15] Paul Scheer: There's no plan.
[00:26:16] June Diane Raphael: The integrity of this structure.
[00:26:17] Paul Scheer: Well, there's no absolute plan on any way of, like, if we get stuck, if we get lost, if there's... If like the, the, that structure is rotted.
[00:26:25] June Diane Raphael: Or just like, is it safe?
[00:26:25] Paul Scheer: Rotted to the bone.
[00:26:27] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:26:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Is bad. Oh, no. Stell- like screws are fa- like they also, once they're there, they have ample evidence as they begin climbing that they should stop and turn back because this is, oh, while a cool idea, structurally unsound.
[00:26:40] June Diane Raphael: Yes.
[00:26:41] Paul Scheer: Yes. And, and I feel like, yeah, I d- like it would've been better too if, uh... I mean, they did set up that the town knows that the, the thing is there, and the light goes on because... I don't, I guess even- The planes ... yeah, I, I don't know. I, I mean, I, I guess it's set up as being dangerous, but I also-
[00:26:57] Jason Mantzoukas: My, my assumption is people, I mean, if, if, um, Hunter knows it's there and can be climbed, mustn't there, mustn't it just be a thing people do?
[00:27:07] Paul Scheer: Well, no, she's Danger D.
[00:27:09] June Diane Raphael: She's Danger D.
[00:27:10] Paul Scheer: She's doing something real dangerous.
[00:27:11] June Diane Raphael: She's doing things that you wouldn't even think of.
[00:27:12] Paul Scheer: I mean-
[00:27:13] Jason Mantzoukas: Fuck.
[00:27:13] Paul Scheer: ... for, for the views. For the views, for the likes.
[00:27:15] Jason Mantzoukas: I love Danger D.
[00:27:16] Paul Scheer: And by the way, the ultimate like was Dan's like. Um-
[00:27:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I think I'm in love with Danger D.
[00:27:20] Paul Scheer: I love Danger D. Yeah. Well, okay. What, what were the... Okay, this is the question I had about Becky. W- And this may be, we may have answered this, but-
[00:27:29] June Diane Raphael: Go ahead ...
[00:27:30] Paul Scheer: Does she have a fear of climbing, or is she trying to get over her grief? Because I, I couldn't quite tell. Like, the way she approached it- It seemed- ... it seemed like she was legitimately a- afraid of climbing, but it also felt like this trip was about her getting over her grief.
[00:27:45] Jason Mantzoukas: I think that the... If I'm doing a little work, um, on the movie's behalf, I think the movie would like us to believe she loves climbing.
[00:27:54] Paul Scheer: Okay, that- She- ... that's what I was saying, yes ...
[00:27:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Loves climbing, but her grief, uh- has kept her off of it, and this is meant to be, and, and that Hunter is trying to get her back on the, quote-unquote, "mountain." You know what I mean? Like-
[00:28:08] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:28:08] June Diane Raphael: Here's what I will say, though. I don't know that Dan would've wanted this area to be his final resting place.
[00:28:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:28:17] Paul Scheer: You don't know what Dan wanted.
[00:28:19] Jason Mantzoukas: This is not beautiful at all. This is, like, it's gross.
[00:28:21] June Diane Raphael: It's also, like, I don't know Dan, I don't know Dan to be climbing structures. I know Dan to be climbing mountains.
[00:28:28] Paul Scheer: Yes. Yeah, it's a very-
[00:28:28] June Diane Raphael: Like, why, why here?
[00:28:30] Paul Scheer: It's, like, the middle of a, a fucking, uh, no offense, but podunk town, which apparently has a lot of hotel business since-
[00:28:36] June Diane Raphael: Offense taken.
[00:28:36] Paul Scheer: ... their entire plan calculated around when people checked out of the shittiest hotel. I still don't know-
[00:28:42] June Diane Raphael: And that's an early checkout, by the way.
[00:28:44] Paul Scheer: 10:00 AM. Whoa.
[00:28:44] Jason Mantzoukas: 10:00 AM?
[00:28:45] Paul Scheer: Can I tell you-
[00:28:46] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, call down and ask for a later checkout. What are we doing?
[00:28:49] Paul Scheer: At this point, at this point, who's checking out, who in any hotel is checking out exactly at the checkout time?
[00:28:53] Jason Mantzoukas: I'll be honest, if the checkout time is 10:00 AM, I'm not staying in that hotel.
[00:28:57] June Diane Raphael: I also wanna know, you know, Paul and I, I hate to admit this, w- but we do have a history of pushing that checkout time.
[00:29:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Well, June-
[00:29:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, what do you mean?
[00:29:09] Paul Scheer: June has a- Asking to push- Well, there's a couple... Well, no ...
[00:29:11] Jason Mantzoukas: Or just not leaving?
[00:29:11] June Diane Raphael: We'll always ask to push, but then- ... even when we get, even-
[00:29:14] Paul Scheer: No.
[00:29:14] June Diane Raphael: ... when we get the, the act- the new time, which is like, "Oh, it can't be 11," well, like, this just happened where they s- I said, "Oh, can we have a later-"
[00:29:21] Paul Scheer: Just this Sunday.
[00:29:21] June Diane Raphael: "Checkout time?" Just this Sunday. And they said, "Absolutely. What works for you?" Well, that's a hard question.
[00:29:28] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:29:28] June Diane Raphael: What works for me is I- When I leave ... now I live here. Yeah. It's like I don't, uh... I'd like to stay the night. But I said, "Well, how about 1:00?" And then they said, "We can do noon." And I said, "Okay." So there was a little bit of a negotiation. Now, noon comes and goes.
[00:29:47] Paul Scheer: Well, let me... Can I just put this into perspective? It's 11:50 and June goes, "Let's go swimming." And I go, "Well, we're, we're not packed. We're not packed."
[00:29:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, you're not even packed.
[00:29:58] Paul Scheer: We're not packed. And I go, uh, and I-
[00:30:00] June Diane Raphael: Now, the pool is right outside.
[00:30:02] Paul Scheer: And, and, and, and June's like, "Well, we can go swimming." And to which she did. And did June swim for about an hour? Yeah. They did.
[00:30:11] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh my God ...
[00:30:11] Paul Scheer: i'm packing up, I'm packing up this room. I look out the window- ... and I, and I think I see June coming in to, you know, you know, to, to help out the packing. But no, she's going into the hot tub with our boys, just like, "All right." And I'm like, it is, it... And then-
[00:30:24] June Diane Raphael: I was teaching them to dive. It's very rare we have a pool deep enough to dive in, and that's, that's-
[00:30:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. No, you gotta take advantage.
[00:30:30] June Diane Raphael: ... critical, like, yeah.
[00:30:31] Jason Mantzoukas: You gotta take advantage.
[00:30:33] Paul Scheer: So yeah, so I mean, so and we have done this. We just recently, uh, by the way, we had to check out of a hotel on Saturday and Sunday this week, two different hotels.
[00:30:41] June Diane Raphael: Oh, it's a whole thing.
[00:30:41] Paul Scheer: And, um, and both we were aggressively late on both, like-
[00:30:45] June Diane Raphael: But that's the thing. Nothing happens to us.
[00:30:48] Paul Scheer: Right. I also feel if you have a bag open on the bed and housekeeping comes in, you'll be, "I'm in the, I'm doing it. I'm almost done." Yeah. "I'm, I'm in the process."
[00:30:55] June Diane Raphael: And of course, I want them to have their time. Oh, it's only happened once that housekeepers actually come in and I've said, "I'm so sorry. We're literally walking out." And the bags really were just right there. It's like, I'm a guest also at other hotels. I want you to have your time to clean this room. I really, really do.
[00:31:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, my question, my follow-up question was how would you feel about arriving at your hotel at 3:00 and the room is not clean?
[00:31:18] Paul Scheer: Well, I did that. I, the hotel that we were checking out of on Sunday, their check-in was, get this, 4:00 PM.
[00:31:26] Jason Mantzoukas: What?
[00:31:27] Paul Scheer: And I was like, that's, yeah.
[00:31:28] Jason Mantzoukas: The, I'm paying-
[00:31:29] June Diane Raphael: That's a little late.
[00:31:29] Jason Mantzoukas: ... for a night that starts at 4:00?
[00:31:31] Paul Scheer: I was-
[00:31:31] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I don't think so.
[00:31:32] Paul Scheer: ... Angry. I w- I was like, what are you talking about? 4:00 PM? And the other hotel we checked in, it was 3:30, right? Check-in was only after 3:30.
[00:31:42] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:31:42] Paul Scheer: I was like, this is nuts.
[00:31:44] June Diane Raphael: I've sensed a trend, though.
[00:31:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, that's because people are not checking out on time.
[00:31:47] Paul Scheer: I know. Yeah, I'm like-
[00:31:48] June Diane Raphael: I do think we're part of that problem, Paul.
[00:31:50] Paul Scheer: Well, but no, no, no, they didn't, they didn't go like, "Let me tell you, the room's not ready." They're like, "No, no, no. Our check-in time," like the one on Sunday was like, "Our check-in time is at 4:00."
[00:31:58] June Diane Raphael: Come hell or high water-
[00:31:59] Paul Scheer: And I, I looked at them.
[00:31:59] June Diane Raphael: ... the room could be sitting there.
[00:32:01] Paul Scheer: I looked at them with a, and then, and it's like, well-
[00:32:03] June Diane Raphael: Maybe they're trying to drive you into the restaurant or drive you into spending more money at their places.
[00:32:08] Paul Scheer: I think quarantine ha- they've all trimmed down on their housekeeping staff. That's why they all have those stupid signs. Like, "Let's not make up the room." They, they, they have pulled back, and we are suffering on the check-ins and the check-outs. Okay? It call comes back to us. We-
[00:32:24] Jason Mantzoukas: We ... we are the victims.
[00:32:25] Paul Scheer: We are the victims.
[00:32:27] Jason Mantzoukas: We are the victims, not, not, not the people-
[00:32:28] June Diane Raphael: Paul, okay, but so, so going back to-
[00:32:29] Jason Mantzoukas: ... cleaning the rooms.
[00:32:30] June Diane Raphael: ... but going back to that motel-
[00:32:32] Paul Scheer: I want a full 24 hours in there.
[00:32:32] June Diane Raphael: ... I can't imagine.
[00:32:33] Paul Scheer: You check in at 4:00, check out at 4:00 what am I fucking getting just a little chunk? I'm like, why are- What am I getting, 16 hours?
[00:32:41] June Diane Raphael: Why are we paying for the day?
[00:32:41] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:32:42] June Diane Raphael: You're right, that is a little weird.
[00:32:42] Paul Scheer: I didn't get a full 24 hour. Give me 4 to 4.
[00:32:46] June Diane Raphael: But then what is the next person supposed to do?
[00:32:48] Paul Scheer: They have to figure that fucking shit out. Like, I need 24 hours.
[00:32:52] Jason Mantzoukas: They're on 7 to 7.
[00:32:54] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Figure it out, people. Get it on your fucking-
[00:32:57] June Diane Raphael: Oh, god.
[00:32:57] Paul Scheer: ... schedule. I'm like, I'm not gonna get a full day?
[00:32:59] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, it's like a production hour. It's just like the week gets later and later.
[00:33:02] Jason Mantzoukas: And then it gets later and later in the week.
[00:33:03] Paul Scheer: You're telling me-
[00:33:03] June Diane Raphael: Okay, but here's my question.
[00:33:04] Paul Scheer: ... you're telling me 4's check-in and check-out is noon?
[00:33:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Ooh, I get to Hawaii tonight. I'm excited. I check in at 3:00 AM.
[00:33:13] June Diane Raphael: Here's my question.
[00:33:14] Paul Scheer: By the way, can I just tell you one th- I- one quick thing? Sorry. The most passive-aggressive thing I ever did was, uh, I was going to New York. I was on a, like, an overnight flight, and they said, "Oh, we can h- we can help accommodate an early check-in."
[00:33:27] Now, did I get there very early? Yeah, I got there around 6:00 in the morning to this hotel, and I was like, "Can I check in?"
[00:33:32] June Diane Raphael: Well, then you gotta pay for the night probably.
[00:33:34] Paul Scheer: Well, I said, yeah, well, I said, "Can I check in?" They said, "No. Room's not ready till 10:00 AM." That's- To which I said, "Fine." And then I took myself, and I laid down on the couch in the lobby- like a bed.
[00:33:48] June Diane Raphael: Oh, God.
[00:33:49] Paul Scheer: And and I rested ... and I-
[00:33:52] June Diane Raphael: What hotel was this?
[00:33:53] Paul Scheer: It was some hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Um, and I... It w- I was tired.
[00:33:57] Jason Mantzoukas: One that, one that you are not upset to never go back to again.
[00:34:00] Paul Scheer: Yeah, there was-
[00:34:01] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, that's what it sounds like.
[00:34:01] Paul Scheer: ... definitely an energy of- There's definitely a note- there's definitely an energy of I'm never coming back.
[00:34:04] I, I know I'm never coming back.
[00:34:05] Jason Mantzoukas: There's definitely a note associated with your name on that hotel's-
[00:34:07] June Diane Raphael: Yeah ...
[00:34:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, uh, register.
[00:34:08] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:34:09] June Diane Raphael: It's the Hilton where Luigi, you know, famously-
[00:34:12] Paul Scheer: Sh- oh. Yeah. Oh. Shoes off, couch... I laid down. I made myself a, I made myself a menace to that place. I was like, I pad out.
[00:34:22] June Diane Raphael: Oh, i've never-
[00:34:22] Paul Scheer: Like, I, I had my suitcase
[00:34:24] June Diane Raphael: heard of such a thing.
[00:34:25] Paul Scheer: Yeah, I, I re- I, I think I lost my mind. I think it was, I didn't sleep on that flight. I was really tired, had a big day coming up, and I wanted to check in. And everyone had told me and assured me, "Don't worry about it, you'll be able to check in early," and I couldn't. And I, and I, I set up camp.
[00:34:41] June Diane Raphael: 10 is still early.
[00:34:43] Jason Mantzoukas: T- I'm a- I'm amazed you got 10:00 AM as a check-in. I, I think-
[00:34:45] June Diane Raphael: What I would have done-
[00:34:46] Paul Scheer: I think that was a normal check-in time ...
[00:34:47] June Diane Raphael: What I would have done, especially at a, at a not great hotel, if it's reasonable-
[00:34:52] Paul Scheer: It was a nice one. It was actually, by the way, it was a nice one ...
[00:34:54] June Diane Raphael: Oh my God. But I would have just bought the night before.
[00:34:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Correct.
[00:34:57] Paul Scheer: I, well, I tried to do that, too. I tried to do it.
[00:34:59] June Diane Raphael: Okay.
[00:34:59] Paul Scheer: I, I tried a couple things. They said, "No, no, no, no, no." So I apologize if anyone saw me sleeping in a hotel lobby like a vagrant.
[00:35:05] Jason Mantzoukas: You don't have to apologize to them.
[00:35:08] June Diane Raphael: All of this is to say, what I'm just gonna go back to is the motel that's near this structure, this rusted out fucking dank, like old TV tower. That motel, the checkout is at 10:00 AM.
[00:35:25] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:35:25] June Diane Raphael: Which means they must... I can't imagine check-ins before 3:00. They must-
[00:35:30] Paul Scheer: Wait a second. No, no. In that town they're coming and checking at 3:00? All right. All right.
[00:35:33] June Diane Raphael: Well, I don't know. That's what I'm asking. That's where most check-ins are.
[00:35:36] Paul Scheer: All right.
[00:35:37] June Diane Raphael: I think that's pretty standard for any hotel or motel room. I'm gonna double check this.
[00:35:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I think this is like a s- roadside motel. I think this is first come, first served.
[00:35:44] June Diane Raphael: Okay.
[00:35:44] Paul Scheer: Okay.
[00:35:44] June Diane Raphael: Well, that makes more sense 'cause I'm like, wow, they're giving... Maybe there's one housekeeper, but like that's a lot of time to clean the room.
[00:35:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. I, I, I agree, but I think this is even lower stakes than any of that.
[00:35:56] Paul Scheer: The average check-in time for hotels is 3:00 PM-
[00:35:59] June Diane Raphael: That's what I thought.
[00:35:59] Paul Scheer: ... with an industry standard ranging from 3:00 to 4:00. Uh, checkout windows are from 10:00 to 11:00, and that four-hour gap is-
[00:36:08] June Diane Raphael: 10:00 is crazy.
[00:36:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Hmm.
[00:36:11] June Diane Raphael: 10 is crazy stuff. Anyway, um-
[00:36:14] Paul Scheer: Sorry, I just need to... But I guess four is normal. This is-
[00:36:17] June Diane Raphael: Three to four.
[00:36:19] Paul Scheer: ... what are we doing?
[00:36:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Who are the guys that steal the car?
[00:36:22] Paul Scheer: The meth heads. Oh. Yeah. I, the meth heads who-
[00:36:24] Jason Mantzoukas: What's their deal?
[00:36:25] Paul Scheer: Well, that's the thing. I, I, I wanted to-
[00:36:27] June Diane Raphael: They're psychopaths.
[00:36:27] Paul Scheer: ... establish them more as, like, a Breaking Bad-
[00:36:30] June Diane Raphael: Me too.
[00:36:30] Paul Scheer: ... duo.
[00:36:31] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:36:31] Paul Scheer: Like, I think that they were alluded to as be- being, like, methy weirdos, but I feel like they should've, "Oh, fuck, the cops. They're gonna fucking bust us." Or do, do something suspect, because for them to see a flare and go, "Oh, great idea. Let's go steal the car." Yeah. Like, I was like, oh, this is such a leap.
[00:36:48] June Diane Raphael: Did they see them up there? Genuine question. Did they-
[00:36:50] Paul Scheer: Yes, they did.
[00:36:50] June Diane Raphael: ... see them?
[00:36:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. They saw them. They, they- they have a telescope. They- Yeah ... have a telescope-
[00:36:53] June Diane Raphael: I forgot to mention that.
[00:36:54] Jason Mantzoukas: ... like they're pirates.
[00:36:55] Paul Scheer: Yeah, they, they're, they... Yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's not binoculars.
[00:36:58] June Diane Raphael: He saw two young women who are too young to be married up there alone.
[00:37:02] Jason Mantzoukas: In push-up bras.
[00:37:03] June Diane Raphael: In push-up bras, in VS... By the way, I've never heard Victoria's Secret-
[00:37:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Right?
[00:37:07] June Diane Raphael: Referred to as VS. In VS-
[00:37:09] Paul Scheer: Really?
[00:37:09] June Diane Raphael: ... push-up bras. No.
[00:37:11] Jason Mantzoukas: Never.
[00:37:11] June Diane Raphael: And they... That was bizarre. And they steal their car and leave them to a certain death?
[00:37:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, I, I couldn't make heads or tails out of that.
[00:37:21] Paul Scheer: Those guys are sketch balls, absolutely, but I think I needed more sketchiness from them to buy... Like, or, or if, you know what would've been fun, is if they had, like, an interaction where those guys came over to their diner table and was like, "Hey, ladies, you like to party in town?"
[00:37:34] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. Yes.
[00:37:34] Paul Scheer: ... "Get away from us, you fucking skank meth heads." Mm. And then they saw them, and they're like, "Let's kill them."
[00:37:39] Jason Mantzoukas: That's exactly what should have happened, is we should have met like five townspeople. We met the woman, the waitress at the diner who pointed out where the tower is. We, uh, w- in the diner we should have met, like, four or five people that throughout the movie we could have cut to to see that, like, when the truck hits the drone.
[00:37:57] June Diane Raphael: That's fun.
[00:37:58] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:37:58] Jason Mantzoukas: You know what I mean? Like, like, we never get... We... A- and I get it because it would maybe let some of the tension out or something like that if we weren't just with the girls the whole time. But there's an element of, like, oh, it would have helped me understand, ooh, somebody could ri- if somebody picked up the drone s- you know, engaged with it more, and then it still amounted to nothing, those kind of, like, oh, are they gonna get res- Like, this moment of the guys being like, "Oh, they see us. They see us." Right. And then, "They're stealing my car," happens in one and a half minutes.
[00:38:30] June Diane Raphael: So quickly that I missed some of it.
[00:38:32] Jason Mantzoukas: It's, it's done.
[00:38:32] June Diane Raphael: Now, I, I don't really know how far binoculars, your average binocular can see, but I found it pretty unbelievable that those binoculars could watch that man outside of his truck look over and see the drone with the note in it, but not pick it up.
[00:38:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:38:53] Paul Scheer: Well, but, uh, g- that note in it, like, that was such a... Look, if I see a drone I'm like, "Oh, I guess they wanna talk to me." Or I'd be like, "Get the fuck away." Like, I would just leave it there in the road, too. Like, it didn't seem to me like- I don't know. It just-
[00:39:05] June Diane Raphael: Let me go investigate ...
[00:39:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:39:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of things that I feel like they could have done, but I, what I think was very smart, um, was... oh, and, and you know what? Wow, we really have not, we've gotten this far into the podcast without revealing that in, that almost all of Act 3 is a Fight Club situation, a Tyler Durden-
[00:39:25] Paul Scheer: Oh, yes ...
[00:39:26] Jason Mantzoukas: Um, where, uh-
[00:39:28] Paul Scheer: Did that surprise you?
[00:39:31] Jason Mantzoukas: ... our two girls... Uh, uh, it, did it surprise me? No, it didn't. Although, I thought they effectively camouflaged it.
[00:39:36] Paul Scheer: Right. I thought so, too.
[00:39:37] Jason Mantzoukas: You know? Um, so there's a moment where, uh, Hunter is gonna descend the 50 feet of rope that they have in order to pick up the, um, backpack so that they can get the drone, and ba, ba, ba, and there's all this mechanics of her going down. It's super dangerous. She gets the backpack, and then she, uh, gets, she, uh, uh, Becky rather, pulls her up.
[00:40:01] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:40:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Pulls her up, and then they, they're up there, and they get the drone, and everything we've talked about with the drone, and everything happens after that. And then at the end of the movie, it's revealed that in fact, Becky has been doing this all alone because in that sequence at the end of Act 2, um, Hunter has fallen to her death.
[00:40:18] She was unsuccessful in... She was successful in getting the backpack, but she fell to her death afterwards, and that every conversation that they've been having, Becky's been having with herself in a Fight Club kind of a way, right? Is, is that a good way to explain it?
[00:40:34] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Yes. Right? 'Cause, yeah, so everything that she's, like, char- like, when she's charging the, I... like, by the way, that was the funniest thing. When she's holding the drone to her chest, she plugs it in, which is something that I still don't believe is a functional way to charge. I don't think you can do a charger and all that sort of stuff.
[00:40:48] Jason Mantzoukas: The wedding band is the conduit.
[00:40:51] June Diane Raphael: Loved that. Uh. Loved it.
[00:40:53] Paul Scheer: A- again-
[00:40:53] Jason Mantzoukas: But she's not tied onto the pole at all. She's simply holding her entire body weight up.
[00:41:00] June Diane Raphael: That was just core work.
[00:41:01] Jason Mantzoukas: But for, how long would it take to charge four bars of a drone?
[00:41:04] Paul Scheer: Well, that, that was the thing.
[00:41:05] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm gonna say, like, three hours?
[00:41:07] June Diane Raphael: I don't know.
[00:41:08] Paul Scheer: Right, 'cause it's like, that to me is the funniest thing. She's holding on, and she goes, "What does the one bar mean?" And I'm like, all right. Yeah. So you don't even understand that technology? Like, we all understand that the bars, one bar is...
[00:41:20] June Diane Raphael: but by the way, you watch Survivor and you look at some of the Survivor challenges where it's always the tiny little women that are winning the pole challenges where they just have to sort of koala bear around the poles. It's not the big buff guys, and they stay on for hours.
[00:41:33] Jason Mantzoukas: For sure. Oh, yeah. Well, and just like, um, Hunter says, it's just like pole dancing.
[00:41:38] June Diane Raphael: It is just like pole dancing.
[00:41:40] Paul Scheer: And then when she sings Cherry Pie. And the way that she sings it, it's not, it doesn't feel like it's a pole dan- Like, she's like, she's like-
[00:41:48] June Diane Raphael: She's my cherry pie
[00:41:48] Paul Scheer: "This is my cherry pie." I'm like, oh, no
[00:41:52] June Diane Raphael: Now I have to say, I thought that they did a great job. Well, I, I, you know, again, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought they did a great job with the makeup and showing them sort of the sun damage, the chapped lips, day to day looking so dehydrated. But my question was this, and I, I think this is only something that women are gonna relate to.
[00:42:14] You are up there. By the way, moment one, just seeing the structure, I'm putting my hair up in a fucking bun.
[00:42:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Yep. Done.
[00:42:24] June Diane Raphael: The fact... Done. That's literally the first thing-
[00:42:28] Jason Mantzoukas: I would do that.
[00:42:28] June Diane Raphael: ... that's happening. Now, right, you would too.
[00:42:30] Paul Scheer: I mean, I would do it too, but I have a s- couple issues.
[00:42:31] June Diane Raphael: No. Now, I understand, okay, we've used one hair band to secure the phone into the shoe, but it turns out, as we'll find out later on in the end sequence, she had another hair band the whole time. The fact that that hair was down...
[00:42:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, they never do an inventory of the backpack.
[00:42:52] June Diane Raphael: No.
[00:42:52] Jason Mantzoukas: What el- there mu- mustn't there be so much stuff in a, in a adrenaline junkie's gear-based backpack?
[00:43:00] Paul Scheer: Well, anything that helped you survive.
[00:43:02] Jason Mantzoukas: How is there no water?
[00:43:02] June Diane Raphael: Where were the snacks? Where were they?
[00:43:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:43:04] Paul Scheer: Well, but my, my favorite moment was when they finally get the water, and she starts drinking it, and she's like, "You want some?" She's like, "No, actually, we should save it." I'm like- Yeah ... that the worst thing you could possibly say to somebody who just took a big... Like, we should ration it now. It's like, no, no, say that before she takes a giant gulp of it, here. People, come on. These people are the dumbest. Cancel that cell phone plan.
[00:43:22] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, well, it, it definitely felt to me like, oh, they're too young. They, they, they're not prepared.
[00:43:26] June Diane Raphael: But here's my question.
[00:43:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah?
[00:43:27] June Diane Raphael: When they start to go down and the ladder collapses, they seem so shocked later on that the ladder's not there.
[00:43:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:43:37] Paul Scheer: Well, 'cause I think that was done in CGI, and they had... and they, they weren't there for the actual ladder collapse.
[00:43:42] Jason Mantzoukas: No, agreed. They are like, when they get to the top of the platform, they're laughing. They're like, "We did it." Yeah. And then they look and they're like, "Wait a minute." And I'm like, you... This all just fell from, like, under your feet.
[00:43:54] June Diane Raphael: What, what did you think?
[00:43:55] Paul Scheer: Well, the ladder collapse, w- to me, really hit home because it felt like when I'm building Legos. Like, when you're trying to put a real ladder together and, like, I was building, like, the Daily Bugle, and it's, it, it fell apart in such a way that it was almost like paper. Yeah. Like, I didn't even understood how it could have held them because it crumbled.
[00:44:13] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:44:13] Paul Scheer: It, it crumbled into dust, and it feels like, why don't you do that, like, have them lose a rung in the middle of it or something? It just seems like they-
[00:44:20] June Diane Raphael: And then you know what really pissed me off though, Paul? Then, 'cause there's a little bit of that ladder, there's probably, like, f- five feet that's remained there.
[00:44:29] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:44:30] June Diane Raphael: Okay? That's attached to the platform. When they get back on that to go get the, to sort of hang off of it to try to get service, she doesn't check that ladder to see if it's secure. They jump right back on it.
[00:44:42] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:44:45] Paul Scheer: You guys.
[00:44:46] June Diane Raphael: I'm like, this thing is crumbling.
[00:44:46] Jason Mantzoukas: And, and the, the... and when, and when one of the screws falls out and falls near her and makes a metallic clang, she just goes, "What was that?"
[00:44:52] June Diane Raphael: What was that?
[00:44:53] Jason Mantzoukas: What was that? What was that? Yeah.
[00:44:54] Paul Scheer: That, that was- The screw.
[00:44:55] Jason Mantzoukas: ... let's start going back down. What are you talking about?
[00:44:58] Paul Scheer: Get out of there. Get out of there.
[00:44:58] June Diane Raphael: Now, I know what I didn't appreciate, and again, I really enjoyed this movie, but I did not appreciate that they didn't show us the rescue.
[00:45:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, that was crazy.
[00:45:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah crazy. How did they get up there? A big crane.
[00:45:09] June Diane Raphael: How did they get up there?
[00:45:10] Paul Scheer: Well, here's the thing. My- This is where the low budget comes into effect here ...
[00:45:12] Jason Mantzoukas: This is, yes, this was all money. Yeah. And my guess is a helicopter.
[00:45:16] Paul Scheer: Oh, and then they just lowered her right at the base? They didn't bring her to a hospital?
[00:45:19] Jason Mantzoukas: There was a helicopter, um-
[00:45:21] Paul Scheer: Right. But they, but again, they lowered her instead of bringing her into a hospital, this woman who's bleeding out.
[00:45:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:45:25] Paul Scheer: Who I imagine, and look, and again, Jason, you may know more about this than, than I do about, 'cause you love Alone and the survival elements of this stuff, but here's a woman who just ate a raw vulture.
[00:45:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:45:36] Paul Scheer: Like, ripped into its chest and started eating its organs. She is puking and shitting. Like, I, I understand, like, we need energy, but it's not like that goes down smooth and gives you energy. It's, that is gonna make you completely fucking barf, eh, like immediately.
[00:45:51] June Diane Raphael: I thought could she try to cook it? Are we gonna make-
[00:45:53] Paul Scheer: Yes, cook it.
[00:45:55] June Diane Raphael: ... fire up there? Could we fry-
[00:45:56] Paul Scheer: Or just cook it on the, like, the hot, the hot thing ... the hot.
[00:45:57] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:45:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, the th- it must've been roasting hot in the daytime. Just wait, you're basically on a grill top.
[00:46:03] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:46:04] Jason Mantzoukas: You know? Just, like, maybe, like, salt it, maybe a little bit of salt, uh, on each side. A good sear, uh, uh, on that-
[00:46:11] Paul Scheer: Just take some of your sweat-
[00:46:12] Jason Mantzoukas: ... on that vulture breast.
[00:46:12] Paul Scheer: ... and use the salt from that.
[00:46:14] June Diane Raphael: Oh my God. You know what I also was like, they really didn't seem to have much basic just first aid training either because when she says about her leg, "Oh, you know, it doesn't hurt anymore. It's just starting to smell," I thought- Oh "oh, well, we are-"
[00:46:31] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, honey.
[00:46:31] Paul Scheer: We're done.
[00:46:32] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, honey.
[00:46:33] June Diane Raphael: We're in a bad way, sweetie.
[00:46:35] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[00:46:35] June Diane Raphael: Like she announces that like it's all good. It's just smelling now.
[00:46:38] Paul Scheer: And now, uh, are, are, are vultures similar to Borg, where they have one collective mind? Because-
[00:46:43] Jason Mantzoukas: It's a hive mind.
[00:46:44] Paul Scheer: ... it's a hive mind-
[00:46:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, it's a hive mind.
[00:46:45] Paul Scheer: Because that, that one, that one vulture understood- Ah ... like, "Oh, got it. You killed my friend." By the way, best, uh, vulture fight since Spider-Man: Homecoming here.
[00:46:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh my God.
[00:46:53] Paul Scheer: Where she fucking fights.
[00:46:54] June Diane Raphael: She- that was an amazing sequence.
[00:46:56] Jason Mantzoukas: It made me laugh so hard when she fought... And, and let me be clear, vultures are big.
[00:47:03] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:47:03] Jason Mantzoukas: This is a bird that has, like, a-
[00:47:04] Paul Scheer: That was a good fight.
[00:47:04] Jason Mantzoukas: ... six-foot wingspan.
[00:47:05] June Diane Raphael: So big that at a certain point I was like, should they try to get on the back of a vulture and just ride it home?
[00:47:11] Paul Scheer: I thought that she was gonna put the- Like, the, the wings on her shoulders.
[00:47:14] Jason Mantzoukas: Like the eagles that rescue Gandalf when he's at the top of Minas Tirith?
[00:47:18] Paul Scheer: I thought it was gonna be a little bit like an Icarus story. Get those wings on, fly.
[00:47:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh my God.
[00:47:24] Paul Scheer: Oh my Lord.
[00:47:25] June Diane Raphael: Oh, wow. God, that made me laugh.
[00:47:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, her fighting the vulture, these were the beats that I was like, yes. Her f- the reveal that it's a Tyler Durden Fight Club scenario, her fighting the vulture, getting the energy, going down, her-
[00:47:38] June Diane Raphael: And then what we're forgetting.
[00:47:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Cramming, her cramming this, the Converse All Star- Oh ... into Hunter's body cavity.
[00:47:45] June Diane Raphael: The most beautiful egg drop scenario. I'm sorry. That was-
[00:47:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Incredible.
[00:47:51] Paul Scheer: Oh ...
[00:47:52] June Diane Raphael: Incredible.
[00:47:52] Paul Scheer: And when she says, "I gotta make sure this gets a signal."
[00:47:55] Jason Mantzoukas: It went in so smooth.
[00:47:56] Paul Scheer: Now, what was the point-
[00:47:57] June Diane Raphael: It went in real smooth.
[00:47:59] Jason Mantzoukas: It went in so smooth.
[00:47:59] Paul Scheer: Real smooth. She shoved it in there like you're just putting a sneaker in a box. Like it was it was like her body was built to hold sneakers.
[00:48:06] Jason Mantzoukas: I was like, this, Hunter has no ribs whatsoever.
[00:48:10] Paul Scheer: I was like, this is, uh, you know, gave me a whole new idea about packing cubes. The, uh- When , now when I saw her do this-
[00:48:16] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, you're gonna need like a Sea to Summit waterproof packing cube to get that phone.
[00:48:20] June Diane Raphael: By the way, that's gonna be a hard thing to explain too.
[00:48:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.
[00:48:24] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:48:25] June Diane Raphael: You know?
[00:48:26] Paul Scheer: Well, the other question is this. Was the plan that by the time it got to the ground, the egg drop got, it would send something? Like, like a... 'Cause sometimes when I try to send a text it says not sent. It doesn't just automatically keep on-
[00:48:38] Jason Mantzoukas: I agree.
[00:48:38] Paul Scheer: Running it through.
[00:48:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I agree.
[00:48:40] Paul Scheer: It just doesn't send.
[00:48:40] Jason Mantzoukas: So that's- And that's part of the problem for like why we didn't get to see the rescue is was what happened sh- the phone dropped inside of Hunter's body and then, uh, the text went through to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and then he called the authorities, but then he was the last to arrive?
[00:48:57] Paul Scheer: But he also didn't think that she was alive because he sees that body on the ground. He's like, "Oh my God." I think that he just finds out-
[00:49:04] June Diane Raphael: Right. The other question is was she live streaming? And did the live stream start inside the Converse- inside Hunter's body?
[00:49:11] Paul Scheer: All right, so she's sitting there like maybe-
[00:49:13] June Diane Raphael: And that's, that's quite a way for an influencer to go.
[00:49:15] Jason Mantzoukas: But it looked like she texted her dad, was what it looked like.
[00:49:18] Paul Scheer: Right.
[00:49:18] June Diane Raphael: I, no, I think she did. She- I think she did. Phones, of course-
[00:49:21] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I couldn't figure this out ...
[00:49:21] June Diane Raphael: Don't work that way.
[00:49:23] Jason Mantzoukas: And again, like, the movie just needs to be over at that point.
[00:49:26] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:49:26] Jason Mantzoukas: So even though earlier-
[00:49:27] June Diane Raphael: I loved it.
[00:49:27] Jason Mantzoukas: ... In the movie itself they were like, "Oh, we can't just send a text because it might not go through. We have to do an update to my channel."
[00:49:37] Paul Scheer: Well, I mean, by the way, I hope, I hope that she takes over her channel.
[00:49:41] June Diane Raphael: Ah, that would be beautiful.
[00:49:42] Paul Scheer: I mean, that would be the beautiful, like, t- twist of fate.
[00:49:44] Jason Mantzoukas: I think, are we all willing to say that if we are in some sort of catastrophic, life-threatening situation, we will upload a message to the How Did This Get Made channel?
[00:49:56] Paul Scheer: Discords?
[00:49:57] June Diane Raphael: Is that the safest route?
[00:49:58] Paul Scheer: The Discord. The, the Discord. The Discord will kinda give us a bunch of corrections and omissions of how we should have saved ourselves.
[00:50:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay, so-
[00:50:09] Paul Scheer: You guys are missing out.
[00:50:09] June Diane Raphael: And definitely, like, correct any spelling errors or punctuation or grammar.
[00:50:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay, so that's the plan.
[00:50:10] June Diane Raphael: That, that they'll do.
[00:50:11] Jason Mantzoukas: If, if we're in a, if we're in a bad situation, we will update the Discord, or maybe just Reddit.
[00:50:16] Paul Scheer: Right. Well, yes, Reddit could work, too. Now.
[00:50:18] Jason Mantzoukas: Stuck at the top of a tower AMA.
[00:50:21] Paul Scheer: Now, I will tell you this, all, and, and, and, and, uh, you know, we would... I would love for us to-
[00:50:25] June Diane Raphael: First.
[00:50:25] Paul Scheer: A lot of people will be like, "Actually, that tower is not in Nevada. It's in this one." "Well, you're actually mispronouncing Nev- Nevada."
[00:50:34] Jason Mantzoukas: Actually, that's not a tower technically.
[00:50:34] Paul Scheer: No, I actually know what Nevada is.
[00:50:37] Jason Mantzoukas: The towers aren't as good as they used to be.
[00:50:40] Paul Scheer: Um, I would love to have seen us in this movie. Unfortunately, we were not cast in the sequel. Fall 2: Deadpoint-
[00:50:49] Jason Mantzoukas: No.
[00:50:49] Paul Scheer: ... which comes out this September.
[00:50:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, no. Is it Becky again?
[00:50:54] Paul Scheer: Well, it's, this is two women find themselves in a desperate fight for survival when a mountain rock side leaves them stranded on-
[00:51:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Great.
[00:51:01] Paul Scheer: A fragile plank more than 3,000 feet in the air. It's Danger Dee's sister, um, i- is-
[00:51:07] June Diane Raphael: Danger Dee has a sister?
[00:51:10] Paul Scheer: ... is in it. Yes, um-
[00:51:12] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, these.
[00:51:13] Paul Scheer: Jax, Jax Hunter.
[00:51:15] Jason Mantzoukas: It's who?
[00:51:16] Paul Scheer: And they're on a beam. Oh. They're on the-
[00:51:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Jax Hunter?
[00:51:18] Paul Scheer: Yeah, that's her name.
[00:51:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Fuck yeah.
[00:51:20] Paul Scheer: And Jax Hunter is played by Harriet Slater. But, um, i- if you wanna look at the poster for it, it's pretty amazing. It's like, it's like the Indiana Jones rope bridge from Temple of Doom, but it's just a plank, and there's one person falling off that plank, and the other person just on the plank.
[00:51:36] Jason Mantzoukas: So- So they're stuck on a rope bridge for the whole movie?
[00:51:39] Paul Scheer: I mean, they, they say-
[00:51:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I love it ...
[00:51:40] Paul Scheer: It, it, like, it-
[00:51:41] Jason Mantzoukas: If that's what it is, I love it.
[00:51:42] Paul Scheer: It, it's like, it, it says, yeah, it, it, they're trapped very high. There's a trailer out for it right now.
[00:51:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Great.
[00:51:48] Paul Scheer: But it is coming out September 2nd. I feel like-
[00:51:50] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm like, we gotta go ...
[00:51:51] Paul Scheer: I'm ready.
[00:51:52] June Diane Raphael: I will be watching it.
[00:51:53] Jason Mantzoukas: We gotta go.
[00:51:53] June Diane Raphael: Again, I enjoyed this movie.
[00:51:55] Paul Scheer: I did, too. I really did. Like this, of all the things that we watched, it went down smooth. It was fun. I think these two- It was real smooth ... actresses did an amazing job.
[00:52:01] June Diane Raphael: I do too.
[00:52:02] Paul Scheer: And this-
[00:52:02] Jason Mantzoukas: It would've been insufferable if they weren't very watchable and-
[00:52:07] June Diane Raphael: Yes.
[00:52:07] Jason Mantzoukas: ... do we think that, um, Hunter and Dan had to die because they cheated? Is this a moral tale?
[00:52:13] Paul Scheer: Oh, that's a moral, yeah.
[00:52:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Is this a, is this a story about-
[00:52:17] Paul Scheer: This is paid by a catholic church.
[00:52:18] Jason Mantzoukas: The, the... Yeah. Is this a story about like, "Hey, you cheat, you die"?
[00:52:22] June Diane Raphael: I don't know. I- 'Cause again, I'm like, they're too young to be married. They don't have any children, so I'm like, "Go do whatever the fuck you want." What are we talking about here?
[00:52:31] Paul Scheer: A good chance-
[00:52:32] June Diane Raphael: Like, I don't know.
[00:52:32] Paul Scheer: ... to get started over.
[00:52:33] June Diane Raphael: It's a great... there's no children involved, like, who cares?
[00:52:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. I mean, no, I agree. I agree. And, and, and so much so that I was like, at a certain point, I really wanted Becky on top... Once Becky knows that, uh, Ben and, um, Hunter were cheating and that she knows that her dad didn't like Ben and all this stuff, I wouldn't have minded, once she's up there and she realizes she's alone, maybe before she fights the vulture or something like that, if she just, like, opened a Tinder profile. Started swiping ...
[00:53:06] Paul Scheer: And, and, and then it falls Just start swiping out there, you know? And the swipes, and then she starts a Tinder profile. When the shoe hits the ground, all of a sudden guys are like, "Swipe right. Swipe right." And then, uh, and that's how they-
[00:53:16] June Diane Raphael: Here's my main... Here's a question. Why did Jeffrey Dean Morgan do this movie?
[00:53:20] Jason Mantzoukas: I was... I had the same que- I've gotta assume he knows somebody in this mo- Like, there's a connection.
[00:53:25] June Diane Raphael: He's great.
[00:53:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Gotta be.
[00:53:26] June Diane Raphael: He's always amazing.
[00:53:26] Paul Scheer: Can I tell you-
[00:53:28] June Diane Raphael: I love him in everything.
[00:53:28] Paul Scheer: Can I tell you, I, I'm gonna tell you, uh, it probably has something to do with, like, $100,000 for a day and a half of work.
[00:53:34] Jason Mantzoukas: Maybe.
[00:53:35] Paul Scheer: Like, I, like I feel like-
[00:53:36] June Diane Raphael: Oh, maybe.
[00:53:36] Paul Scheer: ... I, I, I have a feeling they, they threw a bunch of money at him. He's great, but he only has- he really only has one scene outside the bar-
[00:53:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.
[00:53:43] Paul Scheer: ... And then later in the movie he's still in that same, uh, dark alley outside the bar. So he's... I wanna know what he's up to in the meantime. And then he just kinda pulls up and he's like, "Are you okay?" And that's it. Like, he-
[00:53:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, he worked one day.
[00:53:57] Paul Scheer: ... a day, a day at the most. A d- a day at the most I would think.
[00:53:59] Jason Mantzoukas: For sure.
[00:53:59] Paul Scheer: And, and by the way, great-
[00:54:00] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, he checked out at 10:00 AM, and he checked in at 4:00 PM.
[00:54:03] Paul Scheer: Yeah, that Oh. Um, here's what I'll tell you.
[00:54:07] Uh, we will, we're wrapping it up, uh, here, but I think we have to revisit Fall 2. I'm looking at the trailer right now and-
[00:54:13] June Diane Raphael: Definitely.
[00:54:14] Paul Scheer: ... the plank is very tiny. But this movie, people love this movie. It is now time for a second opinion.
[00:54:50] Music: [Second Opinion Song]
[00:54:54] Paul Scheer: There are, and this is kind of a record in a way, because, well, this movie's only been out for a short period of time, a couple years, 1,041 reviews for this, which is very high for a, a new film. 78% are five-star reviews. And Barbara Klotz writes,
[00:55:12] "Anyone who has a fear of heights definitely needs to wear an adult diaper. The ass pucker meter broke during this movie. This movie rates five stars for suspense and sheer entertainment value. A rare treat for a very original and creative storyline."
[00:55:29] All of that is in caps. The title, "Wow. Ready to get the scare of your life? Five stars."
[00:55:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. All right.
[00:55:36] Paul Scheer: She's ready for it. And then Joe, uh, writes,
[00:55:39] "We have a home theater, so we watch a lot of movies. It's been quite a while since a movie has made me sit on the edge of my seat with my hand over my eyes, peeking through my fingers, and occasionally just about nearly almost soiling myself."
[00:55:56] Jason Mantzoukas: What?
[00:55:56] Paul Scheer: "For two hours, this movie turned me into a sissy wanting my mommy."
[00:56:01] June Diane Raphael: Ew.
[00:56:02] Paul Scheer: Five stars.
[00:56:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Um, no thanks.
[00:56:05] Paul Scheer: This... Everyone's... why is everyone dealing with ass issues on this movie?
[00:56:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Jesus Christ.
[00:56:10] Paul Scheer: Ass puckering, shitting themselves, uh.
[00:56:13] June Diane Raphael: Gross.
[00:56:14] Paul Scheer: Uh, really, um- Well, June, this one by Jay Vincent is, uh, titled... Well, I'll just read it. Jay Vincent writes,
[00:56:23] "Excellent portrayal of female friendship, offering women characters who are fully rounded, capable, and intelligent, without being belligerently feminist in its presentation, although it definitely does play the old trope of betrayal. Five stars."
[00:56:40] Excellent portrayal of female friendship without being belligerently feminist.
[00:56:43] June Diane Raphael: I don't even... I don't understand.
[00:56:46] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I... Yeah.
[00:56:48] Paul Scheer: And, uh, I mean, people are really nervous during this movie. Thomas Morgan writes,
[00:56:52] "This is one of the most exciting, scary films I've ever seen this century, 'cause Das Boot was last century."
[00:56:58] Jason Mantzoukas: What?
[00:57:00] June Diane Raphael: What?
[00:57:01] Jason Mantzoukas: The submarine movie das boot? Okay.
[00:57:05] Paul Scheer: I mean, uh, Giggs writes,
[00:57:06] "Don't go climbing where you don't belong in the first place. The tension was practically unbearable. We all identify with the characters. We feel what they feel. We see what they see. We're with them every step of the way. Okay, self-preservation shouts at us all with multiple voices, and they're very loud. The terrifying part of falling to one's death is that you have time to think about it on the way down. How will I feel when I hit the ground? Will I feel it? Will my last sensation be agonizing pain? Why did I do this? I should have stayed home. No more getting drunk, no more getting laid, no more laughing, no more having good times with friends. All these thoughts and more will pass through your mind like the fast-forward on a tape player, all while you're at terminal velocity-"
[00:57:48] June Diane Raphael: What is happening?
[00:57:48] Paul Scheer: "... Feeling the wind rushing past you at 125 miles an hour and screaming the fateful, 'Aah!' We see this on television or in James Bond movies. And aside from the occasional feelings of nausea and vertigo, I got through the film okay, hoping it would all turn out well in the end. And at the very end of the film, I felt exhausted and spent, and I was glad it was over. This film was extremely well-written, superbly acted. The filming was extraordinary, especially at the heights it appeared to be, and I can only think a large amount of funding was spent on the CGI, 'cause there was one of those adrenaline junkies holding the camera. Although I do doubt they pay actors to do their own climbing. Lots of movie magic. I will add this to the other movies in my collection of mountain climbing films like K2, Into Thin Air, Mission Impossible 2, Vertical Limit, Cliffhanger, and The North Face. That's as far as I'll ever get to being on a, some sheer cliff face-
[00:58:36] June Diane Raphael: What is happening?
[00:58:36] Paul Scheer: or treacherous mountainside. Five stars. Don't Look Down."
[00:58:40] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. Or a Paul Scheer rock face. It... Th- th- what... That was, that was so much information.
[00:58:48] Paul Scheer: So much. And by the way, I cut it down. I mean, the first, the first line is, "I didn't watch this movie, I endured it."
[00:58:54] Jason Mantzoukas: The person seems to feel as though they shot this movie at that height.
[00:58:59] Paul Scheer: Yes.
[00:58:59] June Diane Raphael: Yes, that's w- exactly the problem.
[00:59:01] Paul Scheer: They just shot it on a tall mountain. They shot it on a tall mountain, they bu- and so it looked like they were high. Uh, they unfortunately built it on an anthill, that shut down production .
[00:59:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, really?
[00:59:10] Paul Scheer: Yes. Uh, and it, and then, and then they, uh, got caught in a windstorm, which almost knocked the whole thing over.
[00:59:14] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, my God.
[00:59:14] Paul Scheer: And it was based on the, uh, the real, uh, KXTV/KROV tower in Walnut Grove, California.
[00:59:22] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay. Wow.
[00:59:22] Paul Scheer: The s- the second tallest structure in the United States. Jason, June, any thoughts, uh, about this movie? Uh, anything that we didn't mention?
[00:59:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Hmm. Uh, I don't th- I mean, I think we covered pretty much everything.
[00:59:34] June Diane Raphael: Yeah. I mean, the one thing, like, I just, I think that if I am... If it be, if it comes to it and I have to fight a vulture-
[00:59:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah ...
[00:59:43] June Diane Raphael: I think I'm jumping off, saying my last-
[00:59:47] Paul Scheer: You, that's it, you're gonna kill yourself?
[00:59:48] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.
[00:59:48] Paul Scheer: Wow. Okay.
[00:59:49] Jason Mantzoukas: If I could, if you could wrangle a couple of vultures, you might be able to fly away with them.
[00:59:55] June Diane Raphael: You think so?
[00:59:57] Jason Mantzoukas: No.
[01:00:00] Paul Scheer: Oh, guys, I gotta tell you. Guys, I just, I, I, and I know we gotta wrap it up here. I just, I wanna tell you this. I just looked up Virginia Gardner, 'cause I'm like, Virginia Gardner, I like her, I wanna see what she's in next.
[01:00:11] June Diane Raphael: I like her.
[01:00:12] Paul Scheer: She is in a movie called Killer Whale about two best friends who find themselves trapped on a remote lagoon with a vengeful orca. So-
[01:00:22] June Diane Raphael: Oh, she's making some great choices ...
[01:00:23] Paul Scheer: She is doing it. I, um... By the way, Scott, put it on the list. Put it on the- Killer Whale.
[01:00:29] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, we're having a Virginia Gardner fall or summer.
[01:00:33] Paul Scheer: I, I, i, I'm, I'm, I'm ready for it all.
[01:00:35] June Diane Raphael: Great.
[01:00:35] Paul Scheer: I mean, she's doing it.
[01:00:36] Jason Mantzoukas: We're doing our summer gardening.
[01:00:39] Paul Scheer: She... Oh, my gosh. Uh, so June, we know that June would kill herself. Jason, you are a survivalist. In our group, you are the biggest survivalist. Any, any party fouls?
[01:00:50] Jason Mantzoukas: I would, I would certainly try some stuff. And, and, and die in the-
[01:00:54] June Diane Raphael: Well, of course I would too. I'm just saying it ends-
[01:00:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, yeah, yeah ...
[01:00:57] June Diane Raphael: You know, it ends with us. Me and the vulture.
[01:00:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, no, I don't think I'm coming down. You know what I mean? Like, uh, but I would try more stuff.
[01:01:04] Paul Scheer: Uh, for me-
[01:01:05] Jason Mantzoukas: I would also be more prepared, if I'm honest.
[01:01:08] June Diane Raphael: Hmm.
[01:01:09] Paul Scheer: Do you know, Jason-
[01:01:09] June Diane Raphael: I would hope so ...
[01:01:10] Paul Scheer: jason asked is this movie about, you know, an indictment on people who cheat or, like, the people who cheat pay the ultimate price. I, to... What I would say is this is a movie about social media influencers who are fucking with nature. She took that picture with that dead donkey. She said, "Feeling peckish," and from that moment on, she is doomed herself to death.
[01:01:30] June Diane Raphael: Oh. Yeah.
[01:01:31] Paul Scheer: That, to me, felt like leave the world alone. It's not all about just getting your likes. It's not all about getting the thing. You know what? We should all be sitting down talking about our favorite wrestlers, not climbing the top of the mountains. All right? That's what we should... That's what this movie's about. You know what? Let's take away the mountains and just talk about Stone Cold Steve Austin or Mankind. Let's sit there
[01:01:53] Jason Mantzoukas: They should... she should just be hanging out with Jeffrey Dean Morgan in his c- in his candy shop in Upstate New York that he owns and runs with Paul Rudd- ... and having a nice life. And you know what? Great.
[01:02:05] June Diane Raphael: Amen.
[01:02:05] Jason Mantzoukas: You're rid of Dan. You know?
[01:02:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah.
[01:02:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, the cheater Dan.
[01:02:09] Paul Scheer: I like Mason Gooding too, and I think maybe that was my hard time with him because I have a positive association with him in those Scream movies. I like him as an actor, so I feel like they needed more of a dick, and I think he should've been more of a dick in that first scene. Like, "What are you afraid of? Just jump." Mm. Like, I would've liked a little bit of that. Just give me a little bit, um-
[01:02:25] June Diane Raphael: I don't know.
[01:02:26] Paul Scheer: ... you know.
[01:02:26] Jason Mantzoukas: I think I also would've liked it if in the beginning they had been climbing a non-mountain thing so that it was uh, uh, 'cause it, I kept being like-
[01:02:33] Paul Scheer: They're more adventure climbers ...
[01:02:34] Jason Mantzoukas: I wish this was on a mountain.
[01:02:37] Paul Scheer: Yeah, no, I hear that. Well, the next one-
[01:02:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I wish just for the visuals this looked better than just them atop a rusty tower.
[01:02:44] Paul Scheer: Well, you're gonna get it in Fall 2. They're on a plank. I mean-
[01:02:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Can't wait.
[01:02:47] Paul Scheer: ... They're on a pla- a literal plank. Uh, June Elle On Prime right now. Number one sh- show in the world on Amazon for many, many weeks. Uh, and-
[01:02:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow.
[01:02:58] Paul Scheer: ... one of the most popular shows right now on Prime. It's great. Um, I guess I just did the plug.
[01:03:06] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, I have nothing more to say.
[01:03:06] Paul Scheer: You're fantastic in it.
[01:03:06] June Diane Raphael: Go watch it, everyone. It's really a sweet, fun show.
[01:03:09] Paul Scheer: It's fantastic. Uh, Jason, anything you'd like to plug?
[01:03:13] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, you know what I would love to plug, actually? Um, my new favorite relaxation show is, um, is the new season of Fake or Fortune has started -
[01:03:25] Paul Scheer: Oh, wow.
[01:03:25] Jason Mantzoukas: ... which is a spinoff of Antiques Roadshow. Don't-
[01:03:28] Paul Scheer: Love this.
[01:03:29] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Don't get it twisted. Um, and boy, is it dynamite. Fake or Fortune, this is a show in which people, uh, the, the experts, uh, somebody comes to the experts and says, "I think I have a Modigliani painting," and they have to go and try and forensically investigate this painting and try and prove that it is, in fact, a, a fake or it's worth a fortune.
[01:03:51] Paul Scheer: Oh, I love this. All right.
[01:03:51] Jason Mantzoukas: And it's, it's great.
[01:03:52] June Diane Raphael: Oh, interesting.
[01:03:53] Paul Scheer: Um, I, uh, I just want to also say, we didn't talk about T-shirt, but I do feel like this sh- would be great to make a I Love You in Morse Code T-shirt, but it doesn't say-
[01:04:01] Jason Mantzoukas: A one, four, three.
[01:04:02] Paul Scheer: Yeah, a one, four, three. I think we don't even have to say I love you on it. Just like Dan. We don't have to say I love-
[01:04:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Just like Dan. Dan could never say he loved you to either of the women that he loved.
[01:04:10] Paul Scheer: Ah.
[01:04:10] June Diane Raphael: No, that's true.
[01:04:11] Paul Scheer: And he died. He died there thinking that thought on the way down. Um, all right, everybody, uh, that is our show. If you want to chime in with your thoughts on this episode, please leave us a voicemail at speakpipe.com/HDTGM or by writing on our Discord at Discord.gg/HDTGM.
