Episode Transcription

[00:00:00] Paul Scheer: Protect your nuts because we saw The Legend of Billie Jean. So you know what that means.

[00:00:25] Audience Member: [Intro Song]

[00:01:08] Paul Scheer: Hello people of Earth, and hello people of Los Angeles! We are live at Largo talking about the Legend of Billie Jean. Billie Jean walked so Better Off Dead could run. I want my $2. Well, we would never have had that if we didn't have I want my $603. This movie, wow, wow, wow. When it came out, opening weekend, 14th place. 14th place for a major motion picture. It was beaten by the re-release of E.T.- ... among 13 other films. But what is it about?

[00:01:51] Well, we open up on a Texas teenager, Billie Jean, played by Helen Slater, and her younger brother, Blanks, Christian Slater, who are getting harassed by a local bully named, uh, Hubie? Right? Uh, Hubie busts up Binks's, uh, motor scooter real good, so Billie Jean goes to Hubie's dad, Mr. Piatt, and is like, "I demand justice." Which to Billie Jean means getting paid $608 to fix the scooter. But Mr. Piatt is not a good dude at all. Instead of paying Billie Jean, he tries to sexually assault her. It's not, yeah, it's not fun. Um- This is where the movie goes crazy. Right? She gets out of it. She kind of escapes, and then her brother shoots him seemingly in the neck, but I guess it's just the shoulder, and then they go on the run.

[00:02:38] Billie Jean, Binks, and a couple of their pals, uh, they go on the run from the cops, and the media coverage is bananas, especially the radio coverage. Uh, and basically, Billie Jean turns into a young folk hero. We're gonna get into the specifics of that because they never really talk about why, but she just, she just shot a dude.

[00:02:58] And we're like, "Yeah." Without the specifics, it- I'm on the other guy's side. Anyway, we'll break it all down, but first, let me bring out my co-host. Please welcome to the stage Mr. Jason Mantzoukas.

[00:03:16] Jason Mantzoukas: What's up, jerks? Fair is fair! Fair is fair!

[00:03:24] Paul Scheer: Fair is fair!

[00:03:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Let's get my brother his bike back. Oh my God ...

[00:03:30] Paul Scheer: Scooter. Scooter.

[00:03:32] Jason Mantzoukas: This is, okay. I'm g- this is already, I have so much to say.

[00:03:38] Paul Scheer: I should hope so.

[00:03:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I saw throughout this movie. I saw, this is hands down, I'm not kidding, the best movie we've ever done, exclamation point.

[00:03:48] Paul Scheer: Oh, wait, wait, wait.

[00:03:49] Jason Mantzoukas: June. June.

[00:03:51] June Diane Raphael: I had to come out.

[00:03:52] Paul Scheer: Ladies and gentlemen, June Diane Raphael.

[00:03:53] June Diane Raphael: I had to come out. I had to come out.

[00:03:57] Jason Mantzoukas: We're standing for this one, everybody.

[00:03:57] Paul Scheer: We're all standing.

[00:03:59] June Diane Raphael: I had to come out.

[00:04:01] Paul Scheer: June is crouching.

[00:04:02] June Diane Raphael: I love this movie so much.

[00:04:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes! We did it!

[00:04:06] June Diane Raphael: ... I've, okay, I wanna start off with a public apology. I'm sorry I hadn't seen it till this afternoon.

[00:04:13] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:04:14] June Diane Raphael: I've never seen this.

[00:04:14] Paul Scheer: 40 years late.

[00:04:15] June Diane Raphael: Had I seen this, had I seen this when it came out, I would be a different woman right now.

[00:04:21] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, we, I did-

[00:04:22] June Diane Raphael: I'd be so much better.

[00:04:23] Jason Mantzoukas: I saw it when it came out. I became this person.

[00:04:26] June Diane Raphael: Oh. Oh.

[00:04:35] Jason Mantzoukas: That's what happened.

[00:04:35] Paul Scheer: It doesn't, does not, not, results may vary. Results may vary.

[00:04:35] June Diane Raphael: I can't believe what I saw.

[00:04:36] Jason Mantzoukas: True greatness.

[00:04:37] June Diane Raphael: This is one of the most important, I'm not kidding-

[00:04:40] Jason Mantzoukas: Better than The Odyssey ...

[00:04:41] June Diane Raphael: I'm not, this is one of the most-

[00:04:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Release it in IMAX

[00:04:42] June Diane Raphael: ... this is one of the most important movies of our time.

[00:04:47] Jason Mantzoukas: It's a do or die situation.

[00:04:49] June Diane Raphael: This is a feminist manifesto.

[00:04:52] Paul Scheer: All these things are true, and also whenever Pat Benatar introduces this song on stage, she says, "This is from the worst movie ever made."

[00:05:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Ugh! Wow, that's disappointing

[00:05:04] June Diane Raphael: I, I don't know why we're doing it here and how-

[00:05:07] Paul Scheer: Because

[00:05:07] Jason Mantzoukas: I asked for it. I asked for it.

[00:05:09] June Diane Raphael: Oh, I didn't know that, Jason.

[00:05:10] Jason Mantzoukas: We were-

[00:05:10] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:05:10] Jason Mantzoukas: We were supposed to do something else, forgive me, I don't remember what. When we did Thrashin', Thrashin' reminded me so much of this se- of this movie, but this movie-

[00:05:19] Paul Scheer: You were there, June.

[00:05:20] Jason Mantzoukas: ... is incredible.

[00:05:21] Paul Scheer: You were th- you were part of this conversation.

[00:05:23] Jason Mantzoukas: No, no, no. She, you know that June Men in Blacks herself after every episode. June just has one of those things-

[00:05:29] June Diane Raphael: I do not remember it.

[00:05:30] Jason Mantzoukas: ... where she's like, "Okay, great. I'll see you guys later."

[00:05:31] June Diane Raphael: I don't remember that.

[00:05:32] Jason Mantzoukas: Clicks off and goes in, is like, womp, womp-

[00:05:34] June Diane Raphael: You know what? You know what? I honestly think I th- okay, it's sorta coming back to me, and I think-

[00:05:39] Jason Mantzoukas: But if you didn't know the movie, you wouldn't remember what-

[00:05:41] June Diane Raphael: And also, I thought it was about a man.

[00:05:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Nope.

[00:05:44] Paul Scheer: I-

[00:05:44] June Diane Raphael: Had I known.

[00:05:45] Jason Mantzoukas: ... it's not.

[00:05:45] Paul Scheer: I never saw this movie because-

[00:05:47] Jason Mantzoukas: What?

[00:05:48] Paul Scheer: ... I thought it was about Billie Jean King the tennis star. And when I was a kid, I'm like, "I'm not interested in tennis."

[00:05:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Holy shit.

[00:05:57] Paul Scheer: And so I-

[00:05:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm curious, before th- uh, the... I'm certain everyone here watched it for the episode. Before this, how many people had seen the movie?

[00:06:06] June Diane Raphael: Well, that's a lot. Okay.

[00:06:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay. Oh, I see you, Gen X. I see you. This is the most Gen X movie- I, I- ... I've ever seen ...

[00:06:14] Paul Scheer: I was-

[00:06:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Kids unsupervised-

[00:06:16] Paul Scheer: Oh.

[00:06:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Constantly taking the law into their own hands. This entire movie obeys kid logic at every turn.

[00:06:26] June Diane Raphael: When the kids, I'm sorry to jump ahead. I guess we're not sitting tonight, and I'm fine with it.

[00:06:32] Paul Scheer: We have not sat down.

[00:06:33] June Diane Raphael: When the kids-

[00:06:34] Jason Mantzoukas: I had back surgery just so we could do this movie, and I could stand throughout.

[00:06:38] June Diane Raphael: When the kids start walking behind Billie Jean one by one-

[00:06:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Sobbing. Sobbing.

[00:06:43] June Diane Raphael: ... I, I was like, what the... And they said, "Kenny's in trouble." And then one by one- Ugh ... they all start walking with her. I was like, I can't handle this.

[00:06:51] Paul Scheer: And for me, that was a great moment for why you need proper insulation in your homes.

[00:06:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow.

[00:06:57] Paul Scheer: You're not gonna hear those screams. You're not gonna hear those screams if you insulate those walls ...

[00:07:01] Jason Mantzoukas: there is so much child abuse in this movie. And I just wanna be clear that, Paul, you are pro the parents?

[00:07:09] Paul Scheer: I'm just saying if you don't want neighbors popping their fucking face in your house while you're taking care of business-

[00:07:16] Jason Mantzoukas: If you don't want teen folk heroes coming into your house. Wow.

[00:07:21] June Diane Raphael: Here's what's so cool.

[00:07:21] Paul Scheer: If, if you take off your belt and you don't w- you wanna use it-

[00:07:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, wow.

[00:07:25] Paul Scheer: You don't wanna be reprimanded about it, then put some proper insulation in there.

[00:07:29] June Diane Raphael: Paul.

[00:07:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Are you selling insulation?

[00:07:31] Paul Scheer: I may have a side deal with insulation. 1-800-BONKERS.

[00:07:36] June Diane Raphael: I was with... So I, one of my proudest moments as a parent is that I, at a certain point in the beginning, our oldest son, Gus, who's 12, said, "Can I come in and watch it?" And I had thought, "Mm, okay"

[00:07:50] Paul Scheer: Cause I did tell you, I said, you know, at the beginning of this movie, you said, "Is it okay?" And I said, "Well, there is a sexual assault at the top of the film."

[00:07:56] June Diane Raphael: Yes. To see this movie through his eyes-

[00:08:00] Jason Mantzoukas: Right?

[00:08:00] June Diane Raphael: My work is done.

[00:08:02] Jason Mantzoukas: No.

[00:08:02] June Diane Raphael: I honestly feel like-

[00:08:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Forget about it.

[00:08:04] June Diane Raphael: ... my work is done.

[00:08:04] Jason Mantzoukas: When the girl pulls up-

[00:08:05] Paul Scheer: We're good.

[00:08:05] June Diane Raphael: We're good. I did it today. We're good.

[00:08:07] Jason Mantzoukas: When the girl pulls up-

[00:08:08] Paul Scheer: Wow.

[00:08:08] Jason Mantzoukas: ... and opens the door, and she has the Billie Jean haircut and earring, sobbing.

[00:08:12] June Diane Raphael: Uh-uh.

[00:08:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Sobbing.

[00:08:13] June Diane Raphael: Uh-uh.

[00:08:13] Jason Mantzoukas: I'll read, every time I started to cry and/or sob I wrote it in my notes, because it was happening so often, and I will read them out, and it is-

[00:08:20] June Diane Raphael: No.

[00:08:20] Jason Mantzoukas: All of act three. All of act three just sobbing. Me writing, "The kids are supporting her."

[00:08:27] June Diane Raphael: Here's what's so cool, though. Okay, first of all-

[00:08:30] Paul Scheer: I do wanna add-

[00:08:30] Jason Mantzoukas: I've had a long week ...

[00:08:31] Paul Scheer: I do wanna put the brakes on some of this and just ask some questions. But let's continue, yeah, sure.

[00:08:36] June Diane Raphael: And I'm fine to answer all of them.

[00:08:37] Paul Scheer: Okay, great.

[00:08:38] June Diane Raphael: With my feet and toes on the ground.

[00:08:40] Jason Mantzoukas: June, can I, I, I-

[00:08:41] June Diane Raphael: I'm fine to answer all of them.

[00:08:42] Paul Scheer: And you're in heels and your standing.

[00:08:42] Jason Mantzoukas: If you don't mind, just 'cause I feel like something is happening, and this is a real Team Fred, Team Sanity situation.

[00:08:51] Paul Scheer: Uh-oh. I don't want to hear it.

[00:08:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Where you and I, June, are aligned completely on this.

[00:08:56] June Diane Raphael: I know.

[00:08:56] Jason Mantzoukas: And Paul has already established an affinity for the parental point of view.

[00:09:01] June Diane Raphael: I'm so scared.

[00:09:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Specifically-

[00:09:02] June Diane Raphael: He always does.

[00:09:03] Jason Mantzoukas: ... the abusive parent.

[00:09:04] June Diane Raphael: He always does.

[00:09:05] Paul Scheer: I'm Peter Coyote on this one, okay?

[00:09:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, you, you wish you were Peter Coyote.

[00:09:10] Paul Scheer: Oh, I'm fucking Peter Coyote, man.

[00:09:13] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, you're Dee wallace. At best.

[00:09:14] Paul Scheer: I'm walking both sides. I'm walking both sides. I'm going to the mini golf thing. Here's the thing, people, all right? It takes a long time before they reveal that this owner, Mr. Peot,'s a bad dude. As far as anyone knows-

[00:09:27] Jason Mantzoukas: No, what, what are you talking about?

[00:09:30] June Diane Raphael: What are you talking about?

[00:09:31] Paul Scheer: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

[00:09:31] Jason Mantzoukas: The movie starts immediately.

[00:09:32] Paul Scheer: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

[00:09:32] June Diane Raphael: No, you, you see him.

[00:09:32] Jason Mantzoukas: The movie is high stakes immediately. He tries to rape her in minute 12.

[00:09:35] Paul Scheer: Hold it.

[00:09:36] June Diane Raphael: You see him.

[00:09:37] Paul Scheer: Hold on. All I'm saying is-

[00:09:40] June Diane Raphael: You, you could literally walk-

[00:09:41] Paul Scheer: Hold on.

[00:09:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, what are you ta- Paul? Paul?

[00:09:43] June Diane Raphael: No.

[00:09:44] Paul Scheer: Paul?

[00:09:44] June Diane Raphael: No, no, no. What are you talking about?

[00:09:46] Paul Scheer: What I was going... Wow. I feel like I'm being Billie Jane-splained to. Um-

[00:09:52] June Diane Raphael: Billie Jane?

[00:09:53] Paul Scheer: What I'm saying is this. She becomes a folk hero at a point before the videotape is released. All we know is that for ... What everyone knows is a young child shot a shop owner in the f- in the shoulder, and they're like, "Yes!" So that to me was a, like the, that story-

[00:10:17] June Diane Raphael: You've misunderstood the film entirely.

[00:10:17] Jason Mantzoukas: You didn't like that? Why didn't you like it?

[00:10:19] Paul Scheer: Because it's like we're ... Why, why are we celebrating-

[00:10:23] Jason Mantzoukas: So you didn't think he should've been shot?

[00:10:24] Paul Scheer: I did, but no one knows any of those reasons, unless he's out there sexually assaulting everyone in the greater Texas area.

[00:10:31] Jason Mantzoukas: So unless that's the case, you're comfortable with what he did in this instance?

[00:10:34] Paul Scheer: No. I don't wanna be ... I'm just saying get that, get that narrative out to the media earlier- ... so she can become a teen hero.

[00:10:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay. Your problem is you're all about the media, man.

[00:10:48] June Diane Raphael: It's so crazy.

[00:10:48] Jason Mantzoukas: She's all about the people, bro.

[00:10:51] Paul Scheer: But what are the-

[00:10:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Down here.

[00:10:52] Paul Scheer: But what are-

[00:10:53] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair.

[00:10:53] Jason Mantzoukas: The people in the streets.

[00:10:54] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair. Fair is fair. Fair is fair.

[00:11:00] Paul Scheer: Well, then you'll be surprised to know-

[00:11:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Why are you scolding us?

[00:11:04] Paul Scheer: That that young boy, that that young boy ... She walked in. How does she know what happened?

[00:11:10] Jason Mantzoukas: What do you mean?

[00:11:10] Paul Scheer: With the dad. How do we know that the boy wasn't doing that?

[00:11:14] June Diane Raphael: He's cowering behind a couch.

[00:11:14] Paul Scheer: Because he's afraid of her.

[00:11:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, Kenny?

[00:11:16] June Diane Raphael: Oh my God. I c-

[00:11:17] Paul Scheer: He's afraid of her.

[00:11:18] Jason Mantzoukas: You are, you are so ... You are doubling down.

[00:11:20] June Diane Raphael: Paul. Paul, stop.

[00:11:21] Jason Mantzoukas: Doubling down.

[00:11:22] Paul Scheer: I'm just saying don't jump to conclusions. We don't know.

[00:11:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. W- w- what conclusions?

[00:11:30] Paul Scheer: Well, maybe-

[00:11:30] June Diane Raphael: Wow.

[00:11:30] Paul Scheer: ... he was beating his dad, and then he's like, "Oh, shit."

[00:11:32] June Diane Raphael: All right, right, right, right, right.

[00:11:33] Paul Scheer: "Billie Jean's here. Let me go hide."

[00:11:34] June Diane Raphael: All right, right, right.

[00:11:34] Paul Scheer: Because we don't know-

[00:11:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow.

[00:11:35] Paul Scheer: ... the full story.

[00:11:36] June Diane Raphael: Right, right, right, right, right, right.

[00:11:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. Wow.

[00:11:38] Paul Scheer: No, no. I, I ... No. I, I, I, I enjoyed this movie. There are some logic issues in it-

[00:11:42] Jason Mantzoukas: None.

[00:11:42] Paul Scheer: ... that are crazy.

[00:11:43] June Diane Raphael: Where?

[00:11:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Wrong. Wrong.

[00:11:46] Paul Scheer: They are d-

[00:11:47] June Diane Raphael: What you're w- sit down.

[00:11:49] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:11:49] June Diane Raphael: What you're confused about-

[00:11:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Just so listeners know, now is the moment in the show where we finally took a seat. Winded and sore.

[00:12:01] June Diane Raphael: You are getting caught up in the reality of, like, what she did and what Christian Slater, her little brother, did, and why peop- like, the- the sort of facts around that. What you are missing entirely-

[00:12:15] Paul Scheer: Yeah, i'm getting it.

[00:12:16] June Diane Raphael: ... entirely is how she was standing in for, this story was standing in for so many feelings of helplessness, and powerlessness, and children wanting to be heard, and wanting to be seen by adults who were dismissing them, and that rage being built up. That is what she was inspiring in all of them.

[00:12:38] Jason Mantzoukas: And what, what I mean-

[00:12:38] June Diane Raphael: It didn't matter if it was true or not.

[00:12:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. No, agreed.

[00:12:41] June Diane Raphael: That was beside the point.

[00:12:42] Jason Mantzoukas: And that's what I mean when I say the movie only is interested in the children's point of view.

[00:12:48] June Diane Raphael: Absolutely.

[00:12:49] Jason Mantzoukas: We almost never cut to Billie Jean and Binks' mom, for example. We almost never are with Dean Stockwell. We rarely are with River Coyote.

[00:12:58] Paul Scheer: I wish we got a little bit more Dean.

[00:12:59] Jason Mantzoukas: P- Paul just wants this-

[00:12:59] Paul Scheer: Get some Dean machine out there.

[00:13:02] Jason Mantzoukas: ... to be a movie about adults. But if you'd seen this movie when you were a kid, or if you understood the true children's point of view, like June does-

[00:13:09] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, I'm a child at heart.

[00:13:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh, Team Fred all the way. Um, th- this, like, yeah, no, crazy moves are made because they're being made by teenagers.

[00:13:17] Paul Scheer: I get that.

[00:13:17] Jason Mantzoukas: And that's what's great about it.

[00:13:18] Paul Scheer: Well, here's the other thing. It's just not the teenager ma- crazy moves. Who keeps a gun in the register? Like, where would you even fit that? It doesn't fit in the $20 bill slot. It seems like that should ... Like, I didn't understand the register machinat-

[00:13:34] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, that makes total sense to me.

[00:13:35] June Diane Raphael: Well, here's, here's the thing.

[00:13:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Someone's trying to rob you, you're up at the counter.

[00:13:37] Paul Scheer: Yeah, but where do you put it though? The thick gun.

[00:13:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Da, cha, ching, cha, ching, boom.

[00:13:39] Paul Scheer: How many, how many slots is ... Where's the money? Like, open up the safe.

[00:13:42] June Diane Raphael: Here's the, the ... And I didn't think this was a logic issue, because I did understand why he did it, 'cause children's brains aren't fully developed. But the fact that Christian Slater's, um, defense was like, "Well, he told me it wasn't loaded," it's like, that still doesn't explain the why you pulled the trigger.

[00:13:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, I also- It's like, that still- They also make an effort to be like-

[00:14:00] June Diane Raphael: I'm not getting at that.

[00:14:00] Jason Mantzoukas: ... he doesn't pull the trigger here. He's like, when he's like, "Wait, it's really not loaded?" He shoots him like this.

[00:14:06] Paul Scheer: I thought that, I thought that man-

[00:14:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, not immediately.

[00:14:08] Paul Scheer: Yes ... I thought that man was shot in the neck. Now, he's shot in the shoulder. He seems to go back to work immediately. And not only back to work, but thriving at work. And he's like, "I lost two pints of blood." In the grand scheme of things, I'm like, you got off pretty well. You don't even seem injured in any way. I'm worried that his son is drinking a beer. Is his son of legal age?

[00:14:31] June Diane Raphael: Oh, good heavens.

[00:14:31] Paul Scheer: Because if his son is-

[00:14:32] Jason Mantzoukas: What are you talking about? Of course he's not of legal age.

[00:14:36] Paul Scheer: Then why would he c-

[00:14:37] Jason Mantzoukas: He's a bully drinking beer.

[00:14:37] Paul Scheer: But he comes into the-

[00:14:37] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm sorry, did you not drink a beer until you were 21?

[00:14:41] Paul Scheer: He co- but he comes in-

[00:14:42] Jason Mantzoukas: Did you not drink a beer drink-

[00:14:42] Paul Scheer: I drank some Zimas. So, um- Um, no, but no, I, I, no, I, I get that he is drinking unlawfully, but he comes into his dad's store-

[00:14:53] June Diane Raphael: Unlawfully?

[00:14:53] Paul Scheer: ... With a beer. Like he's drinking in front of his dad.

[00:14:56] Jason Mantzoukas: It's Texas, baby.

[00:14:58] June Diane Raphael: It is Texas. You have to remember-

[00:14:59] Jason Mantzoukas: It's Texas in the '80s. It's wild. It's the frontier.

[00:15:01] Paul Scheer: I couldn't figure out the stereotypes. Are they Southern? Are they Texas? Then I found out there's a thing called Texas Riviera, which I guess is both, and now I'm psyched. Too many stereotypes for me. Uh-

[00:15:13] Jason Mantzoukas: I am shocked that you have problems with this movie.

[00:15:15] Paul Scheer: No, I don't have problems with it.

[00:15:17] Jason Mantzoukas: This is wild.

[00:15:18] Paul Scheer: But I don't-

[00:15:18] Jason Mantzoukas: You do. You are-

[00:15:19] June Diane Raphael: You do, Paul.

[00:15:20] Paul Scheer: I ... I have to bring us down to reality because I feel like- You know, look, there are things going on here that undercut the coolness of what is going on, right? Like, there are moments like, well, what do you think about this? The minute that girl, uh, gets her period, great scene.

[00:15:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Putter?

[00:15:38] Paul Scheer: Great scene.

[00:15:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Great. Love it.

[00:15:39] June Diane Raphael: Truly, and I'm just gonna say this before you go into whatever possible critique you could have of that. I've never. That scene made me cry.

[00:15:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Beautiful.

[00:15:47] June Diane Raphael: I've never- I've never seen in a movie a, a young g- woman get her period like that, and another, a little bit older woman-

[00:15:56] Paul Scheer: Says, "Beautiful"

[00:15:56] June Diane Raphael: young woman take care of her that, in that way. It was-

[00:16:01] Paul Scheer: Well, then why does she immediately ask when can she get a diaphragm? That felt to me like a jump too far. Like, that ... I don't know. I'm not a woman.

[00:16:08] June Diane Raphael: Wait, what?

[00:16:08] Paul Scheer: It was. I didn't know-

[00:16:08] June Diane Raphael: What? Why?

[00:16:08] Paul Scheer: The minute I have my period, I'm like, "Can I get a diaphragm?" Like I was a chick.

[00:16:12] Jason Mantzoukas: So why did you not-

[00:16:13] Paul Scheer: Like I wanna get-

[00:16:13] Jason Mantzoukas: You wanna control her body?

[00:16:16] June Diane Raphael: I don't think it's that weird, first of all.

[00:16:18] Jason Mantzoukas: You wanna control her body? You're right, Paul. She shouldn't have safe sex.

[00:16:21] Paul Scheer: I want her to have safe sex. I'm just like-

[00:16:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Yep, keep diaphragms- keep contraceptives away from women.

[00:16:27] June Diane Raphael: I'm gonna be honest.

[00:16:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Paul Scheer.

[00:16:27] June Diane Raphael: I'm gonna be honest. That scene to me, I thought this is revolutionary. This is mandatory viewing for every young person. I can't, I can't believe I'm seeing this.

[00:16:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Not only that, not only that, but what's ir- to me, so revelatory about this movie and incredible about this movie is that beautiful, heartfelt scene takes place at the end of a car chase-

[00:16:50] Paul Scheer: Yep.

[00:16:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Where they have been shot at. So they are shot at. There is a suspenseful car chase. They get away from a redneck in a truck shooting at teenagers. They get away, and Putter is revealed to have gotten her period, and they stop down to comfort her-

[00:17:06] Paul Scheer: Love it.

[00:17:07] Jason Mantzoukas: ... To talk to her, and I was like, "This is incredible." I couldn't believe it. The movie works- Couldn't believe it ...

[00:17:11] Paul Scheer: and she's like, "When can I..." So now she's like, "Now I guess I can get pregnant, so I better get a diaphragm."

[00:17:16] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:17:16] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:17:16] Paul Scheer: Cause she's been having-

[00:17:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Good for her.

[00:17:18] Paul Scheer: ... 'cause she has been having-

[00:17:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Good for her.

[00:17:19] Paul Scheer: ... sex.

[00:17:20] Jason Mantzoukas: What do you mean?

[00:17:22] June Diane Raphael: You're so, you're so weird, man. You are so fucking weird.

[00:17:25] Jason Mantzoukas: You're just really weird. So you thought that was a re- her request for a diaphragm is because she's already having sex?

[00:17:31] Paul Scheer: She's like, "I gotta protect myself now. Before it wasn't a big deal. Now I guess I can get pregnant."

[00:17:35] Jason Mantzoukas: So, wow. So that's where you went. That's where you went with her line?

[00:17:42] Paul Scheer: I'm just saying-

[00:17:42] June Diane Raphael: There's so many ways to read that line.

[00:17:45] Paul Scheer: No. One- One.

[00:17:46] June Diane Raphael: No. There's so many ways to read that line. This is a- One is that-

[00:17:50] Paul Scheer: This is diaphragm propaganda thrown in our face time and time again.

[00:17:56] June Diane Raphael: One way is, like, she doesn't even really know what a diaphragm is, and she's just like, "Oh, I know, uh, now I have my period. Do I get a diaphragm?" That's, first of all, a, totally reasonable thing for a young woman to say. Another possibility, though, is that, yes, she is interested in having sex, and now she is worried about getting pregnant. And so she does wonder if she can get a diaphragm now.

[00:18:16] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, I'll be honest-

[00:18:16] June Diane Raphael: Another totally reasonable reading of that line.

[00:18:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I had a condom for years before I ever used it.

[00:18:21] June Diane Raphael: Just to have it. Just to have it.

[00:18:21] Jason Mantzoukas: I had it just in case something jumped off.

[00:18:24] June Diane Raphael: Just one.

[00:18:26] Jason Mantzoukas: Just one. Just one, in my Chex box. Not, not Chex Mix. Chex like my, like a... Oh, boy, this is worse. Chex box. Like my box of checks, like from the bank.

[00:18:40] Paul Scheer: Oh.

[00:18:45] Jason Mantzoukas: I took all the checks.

[00:18:45] Paul Scheer: Well, you were gonna pay for it, so yeah ...

[00:18:47] June Diane Raphael: How old were you that-

[00:18:48] Paul Scheer: You're getting a check out and you're getting your condom out. It's a good place to have it

[00:18:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:18:50] June Diane Raphael: I have a lot of follow-up questions.

[00:18:52] Jason Mantzoukas: I was like, "Nobody's gonna look here."

[00:18:54] June Diane Raphael: How old were you that you had, like, a bank account and checks?

[00:18:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Old enough that I still wasn't having sex.

[00:19:00] June Diane Raphael: Okay, I'm just-

[00:19:01] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, like, like, mid-teens ...

[00:19:02] June Diane Raphael: i'm not gonna- What were you writing checks for?

[00:19:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, I was writing checks constantly.

[00:19:03] Paul Scheer: What?

[00:19:03] June Diane Raphael: For what?

[00:19:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Are you kidding? Are you kidding?

[00:19:03] June Diane Raphael: I didn't write a check till I was, like, 21.

[00:19:04] Jason Mantzoukas: And we used the check to pay for everything.

[00:19:06] June Diane Raphael: Wow.

[00:19:06] Jason Mantzoukas: I had a checkbook on me at all times. We would write checks at the grocery store. You write checks. Wait, am I crazy?

[00:19:21] Paul Scheer: Never, no, I was a latchkey kid.

[00:19:22] June Diane Raphael: I definitely wrote-

[00:19:23] Paul Scheer: I never wrote a check as a latchkey kid ...

[00:19:25] June Diane Raphael: No, my parents wrote checks.

[00:19:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Give me house lights for just a second. Who's Gen X here? Who's, who's ... Tell, right?

[00:19:28] June Diane Raphael: I mean, I am.

[00:19:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Am I crazy, or is ... Are we writing checks?

[00:19:32] Paul Scheer: No, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no,

[00:19:33] June Diane Raphael: We're writing checks as a-

[00:19:36] Paul Scheer: Wait, are you writing checks as children?

[00:19:36] 20-year-old

[00:19:36] June Diane Raphael: As children ... not.

[00:19:36] Paul Scheer: As children.

[00:19:36] Jason Mantzoukas: At, at 15, 16.

[00:19:39] June Diane Raphael: I wasn't writing checks at 15.

[00:19:40] Jason Mantzoukas: I had a summer job, I had a checking account, and I paid for shit with it.

[00:19:43] June Diane Raphael: I think you just really wanted to write checks.

[00:19:44] Jason Mantzoukas: What is going on? Fair is fair.

[00:19:55] Paul Scheer: All I will say is that, you know, that Binks-

[00:19:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I gotta stop screaming.

[00:19:59] Paul Scheer: ... that Binks, Binks does, I believe, you know, he's kind of examining that gun and in the examination of the gun, the trigger goes off, right? It's a, it's a-

[00:20:07] June Diane Raphael: I guess so, yeah.

[00:20:08] Paul Scheer: ... A tragic moment. That's what happens And at that moment I do believe there's a, "Oh my God, we just shot this man. We gotta leave town." Very Texas. So I love it, right?

[00:20:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, very kid.

[00:20:19] Paul Scheer: 100%.

[00:20:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Very kid logic.

[00:20:20] Paul Scheer: Right, let's run away from what we did. Now, if you tell me that at that moment makes Binks go, "I'm never gonna handle a gun again because I'm nervous about it." This motherfucker starts pulling guns all the time.

[00:20:34] Like he saw the damage, right? He's like, "Oh, thank God. Oh, thank God the guy is, he's okay. He's not even in fair condition. He's in good condition." The radio DJ's here. The radio DJ is on the scene. How did the fucking radio guy get there within minutes?

[00:20:49] Jason Mantzoukas: It's a local radio station. He's at the beach at the end too.

[00:20:52] Paul Scheer: He's dispatched-

[00:20:52] Jason Mantzoukas: These aren't nitpicks.

[00:20:54] Paul Scheer: ... at the end

[00:20:54] Jason Mantzoukas: ... these are nitpicks.

[00:20:55] Paul Scheer: All right.

[00:20:55] Jason Mantzoukas: I loved how much local radio was part of the narrative.

[00:20:59] June Diane Raphael: Everywhere.

[00:20:59] Paul Scheer: But the narrative still is man shot by boy and everyone's like, "Yeah boy, let's go." Because now, now look. She shoots him. I actually think this movie is, is so wildly ahead of its time in so many different ways.

[00:21:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:21:15] Paul Scheer: Right, right. So she shoot... Sorry. The boy shoots the man.

[00:21:19] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:21:19] Paul Scheer: Uh, we have a typical boy-

[00:21:21] June Diane Raphael: It was a man-man scene.

[00:21:21] Paul Scheer: ... Man-woman scene. And- Yep. They have a boy-man shooting scene with woman watching. Now- ... why in that moment, and th- this is maybe where I am like I am a little bit confused and, and I could have missed this. Why is Billy Jean getting all of like the press? Because the boy shot the man. Billy was there watching.

[00:21:49] June Diane Raphael: Huh.

[00:21:51] Paul Scheer: They don't show, they don't show the boys in the jungle like, "What a young school boy, and here's the-"

[00:21:56] June Diane Raphael: Oh, I know why. I know why.

[00:21:57] Paul Scheer: All right.

[00:21:58] June Diane Raphael: Actually, so the rage of what's the guy's name?

[00:22:02] Paul Scheer: Nicki Petri or whatever.

[00:22:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Huebel's dad.

[00:22:03] Paul Scheer: Yeah, yeah.

[00:22:04] June Diane Raphael: Huebel's dad.

[00:22:05] Paul Scheer: The rapist. Let's call him the, let's just call him the rapist.

[00:22:06] June Diane Raphael: The rapist, yeah. So, so I didn't question that because I was like, he hates her so much.

[00:22:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:22:12] June Diane Raphael: His son hates her so much that that is the narrative of that moment, that she caused this.

[00:22:18] Jason Mantzoukas: When they're in the yearbook. They're looking at their pictures in the yearbook.

[00:22:20] June Diane Raphael: Yes. Okay. And it's like she caused this. She caused this because she didn't have sex with him.

[00:22:24] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:22:25] June Diane Raphael: It is her fault. And so that is sort of the narrative that's presented to the press. And then gets picked up.

[00:22:31] Paul Scheer: So he doesn't want to say to the press, like, so he, you think on some level he said, "She shot me," because he's more nervous that she could come out and say the thing.

[00:22:41] Jason Mantzoukas: He tried to rape me.

[00:22:42] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:22:42] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:22:43] Jason Mantzoukas: He's saying, "She shot me. She had me shot or she shot me," basically.

[00:22:46] Paul Scheer: I mean, that guy is a dirt bag and he, and, and, and this is the-

[00:22:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, he's much worse than a dirt bag.

[00:22:51] Paul Scheer: Oh, he is just... I mean, I'm not, I have no, I have, I don't like Mr. Piatt. I do think, what I'll say about him. Great business sense. I mean, in the world-

[00:23:02] June Diane Raphael: He is a capitalist.

[00:23:04] Paul Scheer: ... before social media.

[00:23:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.

[00:23:05] Paul Scheer: Those posters are great.

[00:23:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:23:06] Paul Scheer: They're very kind of, like-

[00:23:08] June Diane Raphael: Oh, my God.

[00:23:09] Paul Scheer: ... cool. They're very, like-

[00:23:09] June Diane Raphael: I have to be honest.

[00:23:10] Paul Scheer: Obama-esque, like, hope. You know? It's like-

[00:23:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Yep ...

[00:23:12] Paul Scheer: Shepard Fairey style.

[00:23:14] June Diane Raphael: I, I was watching the movie and it took everything ... Like, I, I want that merch so-

[00:23:20] Paul Scheer: Yes ...

[00:23:20] June Diane Raphael: More than I want any-

[00:23:21] Paul Scheer: I think we will have to make... I think that we have to make that merch if it doesn't exist ...

[00:23:23] June Diane Raphael: Any merch ever.

[00:23:23] Jason Mantzoukas: I want every bit of it.

[00:23:25] June Diane Raphael: I want every. It was like when we went to see Joni Mitchell, and I was like how do I buy-

[00:23:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Everything.

[00:23:29] June Diane Raphael: ... Everything that's available in this tent? I feel the same.

[00:23:31] Jason Mantzoukas: The answer was you couldn't because they wouldn't let you. Because I got to the front of that line and they said- ... "You can only have one of these shirts, one of these, and a tote bag."

[00:23:39] June Diane Raphael: Or a beret, which I bought.

[00:23:40] Jason Mantzoukas: I did get the beret.

[00:23:43] June Diane Raphael: Um, but-

[00:23:43] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm not kidding ...

[00:23:44] June Diane Raphael: I, I, I just love the design of it.

[00:23:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Let's wear our berets some night.

[00:23:49] June Diane Raphael: Absolutely. I love the design-

[00:23:50] Paul Scheer: Next show.

[00:23:50] June Diane Raphael: ... of all of those hats, the hats, the t-shirts-

[00:23:55] Paul Scheer: I mean, he-

[00:23:55] June Diane Raphael: ... everything ...

[00:23:55] Paul Scheer: he got that going

[00:23:55] June Diane Raphael: ... the posters.

[00:23:55] Paul Scheer: When you talk about local business coming together to support, he is getting the artisans from the community. What style do you have? Great. You make the posters.

[00:24:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, what I loved was-

[00:24:04] Paul Scheer: You make the hats ...

[00:24:04] Jason Mantzoukas: It started as him hanging a sign to say, "Have you seen her?"

[00:24:09] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:24:09] Jason Mantzoukas: "She needs to be busted." And then teenagers are coming to be like-

[00:24:14] June Diane Raphael: I want to buy it.

[00:24:14] Jason Mantzoukas: ... "I want that. She's my, an icon to me." And it's a great scene because he's like, "This, these kids, you gotta get 'em. I hate these kids." And the kids are, "It's not for sale. A- and I'll give you more." And then he's like, "Okay, now it is for sale." And then he scales up immediately.

[00:24:27] Paul Scheer: Uh so fast that it seems like he would be actually okay with her staying on the run to make more money. It's a money ma- the longer she's on the lam and loose, the posters are moving, all right?

[00:24:41] Jason Mantzoukas: What I love about this movie is it starts immediately. Before the opening credits are done, the bike is ruined, and it, we are in motion.

[00:24:51] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:24:51] Jason Mantzoukas: So it is... We're being rocketed through all of these elements because what I love about it is it is, yes, it is this kids on the run movie, but then it's also, like, this weird, like, the m- the, the chunk... it's all vignettes, right? And the vignette where they go into the abandoned ho- what they think is the abandoned house and it's Lloyd's house.

[00:25:10] Paul Scheer: I love this.

[00:25:10] June Diane Raphael: I love that.

[00:25:10] Paul Scheer: This is one of the mo- And again, I love that actor. I love their relationship. I love the way he supports her.

[00:25:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Great.

[00:25:16] Paul Scheer: Why should I do it? Well, you're Billie Jean. Love all that. I'm all about... But I do have some questions about this house. What was he setting up? Why were there so many cameras? And what was the plan for the night? Because it seems like he-

[00:25:28] Jason Mantzoukas: For him or for them?

[00:25:29] Paul Scheer: For him.

[00:25:29] June Diane Raphael: Oh, for him.

[00:25:30] Paul Scheer: It seems like he had set up a haunted house for one. That he was not expecting visitors to come into.

[00:25:39] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, what luck.

[00:25:40] June Diane Raphael: Wow.

[00:25:41] Jason Mantzoukas: And I'll be honest. If, if you don't mind, I'll be honest. Paul, this seems like something you would have done.

[00:25:47] Paul Scheer: Uh, Jason.

[00:25:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Set up o- on a night, a Friday night, set up in your house a haunted house for one, and then God damn it if the most beautiful woman didn't just walk through the door- I, I'm gonna tell you- to eat your chocolate cake and get chased around by you.

[00:26:02] Paul Scheer: Everything about that is true, except for the beautiful woman fu- coming into my house. I did at many ti- I'd blow up skeletons. I set them around my, my kitchen table. Uh, I had some shrunken heads that would hang from the wall.

[00:26:14] Jason Mantzoukas: What?

[00:26:14] Paul Scheer: I was a big fan of cobwebs, so I was putting that all up in the house-

[00:26:18] Jason Mantzoukas: That, can we just get a, a-

[00:26:18] Paul Scheer: On a Friday night.

[00:26:20] Jason Mantzoukas: ... not for the episode, a big fan of cobwebs, Paul scheer t-shirt.

[00:26:23] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Big fan of ... So I had, I was, I'm there. I'm doing- I'm doing a haunted house. But so the cameras, I'll be kind and say the cameras are to kind of give us a sense that his dad may be up to some s- shady shit.

[00:26:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Who knows?

[00:26:40] Paul Scheer: Because the cameras-

[00:26:40] June Diane Raphael: I think the dad was, was checking on him ...

[00:26:43] Paul Scheer: So the dad's watching those, that live feed.

[00:26:45] Jason Mantzoukas: No, I think it's Lloyd.

[00:26:45] June Diane Raphael: I don't think he's watching it in that moment, but I think it is a-

[00:26:47] Jason Mantzoukas: I think it's Lloyd, like, spying on the house.

[00:26:50] Paul Scheer: Okay. So then-

[00:26:51] June Diane Raphael: For what purpose?

[00:26:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Cause he's, like, a, I don't know, he's got the equipment.

[00:26:55] June Diane Raphael: Okay.

[00:26:55] Paul Scheer: Okay. So then the other question is was that food a trap? Was that a hot girl trap? Like, if we put enough chicken in the window- ... girls will come in and eat it.

[00:27:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Now, if it had been on a windowsill, and if, if Putters had been like, "Whoop."

[00:27:14] Paul Scheer: They do kinda, they do kinda see it, and they go in, and they have the best line of all time, which is, um, "Rich food isn't supposed to taste like what it is."

[00:27:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:27:23] June Diane Raphael: Great line.

[00:27:24] Paul Scheer: I love that.

[00:27:25] Jason Mantzoukas: I love the class warfare depicted in this movie.

[00:27:29] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:27:29] Jason Mantzoukas: I love that it is, they are constantly being dismissed because they are trailer trash, they are, they are-

[00:27:34] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:27:35] Jason Mantzoukas: ... and it's all the rich people who are like, "Fuck you, fuck them. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt." Dean Stockwell basically being like, "Fu- shoot him.

[00:27:42] Fucking shoot him. Who cares?"

[00:27:43] Paul Scheer: The sharpshooters coming in, and not just one.

[00:27:45] June Diane Raphael: Oh, my god.

[00:27:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Now, and you were-

[00:27:47] Paul Scheer: Multiple sharpshooters-

[00:27:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Which you are on board for

[00:27:50] Paul Scheer: ... to kill someone who has not killed anyone. Who has done no violence. Like-

[00:27:54] June Diane Raphael: Well, there's also, there's an incredible moment. This is a beautiful film. There's an incredible moment at the police station when she first goes to report that her brother's bike has been assaulted. I mean, it was really, something very terrible happened to that bike. W- and she wants it back.

[00:28:10] Jason Mantzoukas: And him. I'm sorry, and Binks.

[00:28:12] June Diane Raphael: And him. And him.

[00:28:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Binks is, Binks gets his ass kicked.

[00:28:14] June Diane Raphael: So she goes, she goes to report to the cop, and he says, "I promise you, if that bike's not on your front lawn in two days..." And she goes, "I don't have a front lawn. I'm, I live in..." I was about to say Widow's Bay, and I know that's not right. But whatever the trailer park is.

[00:28:28] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. Take, take us, take us back to the Bay.

[00:28:31] June Diane Raphael: Whatever the trailer, she says, "I live in the, I live in the trailer park." And he lo- he, he sort of recognizes it and, and readjusts, and I was like, wow, this movie is way more than you think it is.

[00:28:45] Paul Scheer: Okay, all, all I'm thinking is this. All I'm thinking is this. This is seriously what I'm thinking. Peter Coyote worked for the government and he fucking finds out, "Hey, there's a disturbance at this fucking house in California. You gotta go." Gets involved in the whole E.T. thing and he's like, "You know what?

[00:29:04] I'm out. I am out of this business. I don't want to terrorize kids anymore. I fucking did that. I fucking killed their dog alien. I'm upset. I'm moving to Texas. I'm gonna work a desk job." He gets there and then she walks in the door and he's like, "Fuck, here I go. I'm fucking dr- Every time I think I'm back out, every time I'm out these fucking kids are pulling me back in to their bullshit."

[00:29:27] And I'm looking at Peter and he's like, "I should have hung up those keys. I should have gotten out." And then I, and I'm looking at Peter Coyote. I think this is a sequel to E.T. for Peter Coyote's character is what I'm saying.

[00:29:35] Jason Mantzoukas: I liked also that he sussed everything that was going on with her and then when he's talking to Hubie's dad he also immediately susses out that he was a sketch ball to her.

[00:29:46] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:29:46] Jason Mantzoukas: When he's, when he's like, "She's a attractive woman or whatever, girl or something." You know what I mean? Like, he's like also gets it this guy's a fucking creep.

[00:29:51] June Diane Raphael: He's such a great character because he also-

[00:29:52] Paul Scheer: Oh, wait. No, when I say I like Peter Coyote before everyone's like, "Woo-oo, fuck him." Now we're talking about Peter Coyote.

[00:29:58] June Diane Raphael: Because it was the f- because it was the first thing you said.

[00:30:01] Paul Scheer: It's the best, one of the best characters in the movie because he's-

[00:30:03] June Diane Raphael: No, he is a great character.

[00:30:05] Paul Scheer: ... the bridge-

[00:30:05] June Diane Raphael: He is a great character and-

[00:30:07] Jason Mantzoukas: To what?

[00:30:07] Paul Scheer: Kids to adults.

[00:30:08] Jason Mantzoukas: See? There it is. He wants the movie to be about adults.

[00:30:13] June Diane Raphael: Here's the only reading-

[00:30:14] Jason Mantzoukas: We kids gotta stick up for the rest of the kids, right?

[00:30:16] Paul Scheer: No. No, what I actually... No, what I love about this movie is every adult is bad except for Peter O'Toole, right?

[00:30:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:30:23] Paul Scheer: Every adult is-

[00:30:24] June Diane Raphael: Y- well-

[00:30:25] Paul Scheer: Oh, all right, a couple that aren't I don't think we're- Uh, the guy with the belt is okay, I guess.

[00:30:28] June Diane Raphael: Um. I don't think their mom is bad. I think their mom is doing the best she can.

[00:30:31] Ugh. But I will say, and there's-

[00:30:32] Jason Mantzoukas: I loved when the mom was getting ready for a date.

[00:30:35] June Diane Raphael: Oh, and she... At first I thought she put a white mouse down her blouse and then I realized it was just-

[00:30:39] Paul Scheer: It was the '80s.

[00:30:40] June Diane Raphael: ... everybody was so sweaty. Also, the sweat, the heat, the way that it was portrayed.

[00:30:44] Paul Scheer: Disgusting place.

[00:30:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[00:30:44] June Diane Raphael: Beautiful. But-

[00:30:45] Jason Mantzoukas: And the way they talk about, they talk about Vermont like it's some promised-

[00:30:48] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:30:48] Jason Mantzoukas: ... promised land.

[00:30:48] June Diane Raphael: It's not hot there. It's hilarious.

[00:30:51] Paul Scheer: But- I do, I do wanna just take a moment to talk about Vermont, because I get it. It's the '80s.

[00:30:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Paul's doing his nitpick stance now.

[00:31:01] Paul Scheer: I get it. It's the '80s. We don't... we have encyclopedias. We can't see everything. This movie does posit, though, uh, Binx gets shot, obviously, later in the movie. When we're in Vermont at the end, they're in knee-deep snow in Vermont. Now, I know climate change is real, but it feels like we're in the dead of summer, and he's still got that cast on. I'm like, "It's not snowing in Vermont in August." Come on, guys.

[00:31:27] June Diane Raphael: Okay.

[00:31:27] Paul Scheer: Can't we just see a nice Vermont?

[00:31:28] June Diane Raphael: You know what, Paul?

[00:31:28] Jason Mantzoukas: The audience, I want the audience at home to recognize that this audience didn't give that anything.

[00:31:34] June Diane Raphael: Here, you know what? No, no, no, no, no.

[00:31:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Because we know that they earned that snow, every inch of it.

[00:31:43] June Diane Raphael: And that's, that's it. Yeah.

[00:31:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[00:31:45] Paul Scheer: T- Snow-

[00:31:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Fair is fair ...

[00:31:48] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair. Fair is fair.

[00:31:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Fair is fair.

[00:31:49] Paul Scheer: Snow-

[00:31:49] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair ...

[00:31:50] Paul Scheer: Snow is just-

[00:31:51] June Diane Raphael: I'm gonna give you, paul, I'm gonna g-

[00:31:52] Paul Scheer: Snow is just white heat.

[00:31:54] June Diane Raphael: I'm gonna give you, Paul, what you seem to want and need, which is an adult reading of the movie-

[00:31:59] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes

[00:31:59] June Diane Raphael: ... or an adult framework or lens through which to look at it.

[00:32:03] Paul Scheer: I see it as a kid movie.

[00:32:04] June Diane Raphael: Okay, because there is one.

[00:32:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Which is how you looked at Drop dead Fred as well, is through the pri- the parent's eyes.

[00:32:08] June Diane Raphael: That's absolutely right, which is interesting. But I will give you, actually, an adult lens, because I think this is such a fair reading of the movie, and, and there were many times during it I was reading the movie this way, which was about motherhood.

[00:32:21] Now, she is a mother figure to her younger brother, and she is taking care of his mistakes left and right, and trying to do right by him because he is continually getting them into trouble.

[00:32:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Escalating.

[00:32:37] June Diane Raphael: And at a cer- escalating.

[00:32:39] Paul Scheer: Pulling that gun out too many times.

[00:32:39] June Diane Raphael: And at a certain point- as so many mothers can relate to this, she l- she does fucking lose it And I was like, "Absolutely, I understand this. You've gone insane because you are over, you know, worked and tired and all of it." And I was like, this is a beautiful portrayal of an older sister, but is really about a mother figure.

[00:33:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, I'll g- I'll g- th- to me, I agree, and the note that I made in this was I loved their found family of misfit kids who run away together and are on the road, and it reminded me of Red Dawn and the Wolverines and that group of teenagers who have to come together and be their own version of a family.

[00:33:22] Paul Scheer: Never saw it.

[00:33:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Never seen Red Dawn?

[00:33:24] Paul Scheer: No.

[00:33:28] Jason Mantzoukas: Put it on the list.

[00:33:29] June Diane Raphael: Unspooled.

[00:33:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Put it on the list immediately.

[00:33:31] June Diane Raphael: Here, here's the thing.

[00:33:32] Paul Scheer: I saw Rising Sun with Sean Connery and, uh...

[00:33:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, I think you- Oh, can we do Red Dawn for the show, please?

[00:33:38] Paul Scheer: I mean, but that's a good movie.

[00:33:40] June Diane Raphael: Great.

[00:33:40] Jason Mantzoukas: So is this.

[00:33:41] June Diane Raphael: So is this. I didn't understand why we were doing it. I will just say this, when she walks into Kenny's house, she did what, again, so many women, adult women do, which is, "I know a child is hurting, and I'm, I don't know what to do and what is expected of me there." And what's so beautiful about that scene is she's scared, and she doesn't know what's gonna happen. And she does it anyway.

[00:34:09] Jason Mantzoukas: She doesn't al- it's not like she always acts like a badass or al- is she-

[00:34:12] June Diane Raphael: She's not. This is what's so cool about the movie. She is not a badass.

[00:34:16] Jason Mantzoukas: Nope.

[00:34:16] June Diane Raphael: She is meeting these moments in the best way she can, and she has a kind heart, and she's doing the best she can, but th- this is not a superhero.

[00:34:26] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, every scene she's trying to end the chaos that is spiraling out of control.

[00:34:31] June Diane Raphael: And protect and take care of the younger people around her.

[00:34:33] Paul Scheer: What I, what I think, I mean, look, now to go not funny for a moment, I'll say what I think is really interesting about this is a lot of the times when we see strong women, the idea is that they'll kick somebody's ass, right? So if that movie, if that scene is in a movie right now, she'd go in there and beat the fuck out of this old man.

[00:34:49] He'd be like, "Never touch that kid again." But she doesn't. She just kinda looks at him and stares at him, and it's like-

[00:34:56] June Diane Raphael: And she is scared in that moment.

[00:34:57] Paul Scheer: ... And he knows that he's like in, right. But he also knows, like, I've been caught. Like, just by being seen, he's been caught, which is what she's doing over there. And I also think, you know, you have a lot of moments here where an older woman is looking out for a younger boy, which is very much not the case in any '80s movie, where it's always like, the older brother's looking out for the younger sister.

[00:35:15] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:35:15] Paul Scheer: So that's cool. But now I'll go back to my other part of this movie where I go- "now let me ask you this." No.

[00:35:22] June Diane Raphael: No, this is a subversive tale. This is, this is new. This is- Uh- ... a revolutionary narrative. I-

[00:35:31] Jason Mantzoukas: June, you are making me so happy.

[00:35:31] Paul Scheer: But it's afraid of its own self.

[00:35:31] Jason Mantzoukas: How?

[00:35:32] Paul Scheer: They go to the fucking mall. Here's the radio guy out talking to people, right? And they're like, "Huh, how do we drill in feminism?" And he goes, "Well, that's a woman's perspective." Yeah, no shit. You interviewed a woman. There is like, a woman's perspective.

[00:35:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, but I think that is relevant-

[00:35:47] June Diane Raphael: Those were the questions.

[00:35:48] Jason Mantzoukas: ... to the times this movie was made-

[00:35:49] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, those were the questions that were being asked.

[00:35:50] Jason Mantzoukas: ... where you could dismiss a woman's perspective.

[00:35:52] Paul Scheer: You think he was dismissing it? I thought he was, like, underlining it for the audience. Like, I felt like somebody, like that was like a studio note. Like, "Let's make sure that we are s- like, it's f- this is a feminist movie." But look-

[00:36:00] Jason Mantzoukas: Absolutely n- I can't imagine that was a studio note in any w- this movie, I think, is just making, like, its own rules.

[00:36:08] Paul Scheer: Oh, you're gonna be so upset.

[00:36:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Really? Yeah. All right. Let's hear it.

[00:36:11] Paul Scheer: Well, I mean, I, I, I mean, I don't, let's- Let's see.

[00:36:13] June Diane Raphael: Now he's gonna go to his notes.

[00:36:13] Paul Scheer: No, no, I won't go to my notes. I'll just tell you that you'll be upset. I'll reveal it later.

[00:36:18] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay.

[00:36:18] June Diane Raphael: Oh, great.

[00:36:18] Paul Scheer: But no- but here's what I'll say. This director who came in, I think fought very hard to unpack a script that was very '80s, and I think that these are all the little moves that he did that makes her strong. And I think, look, honestly, is $600 that much? And I did do some research, and it's about $1,860 now in, uh, in, you know, so-

[00:36:40] June Diane Raphael: And fair is fair.

[00:36:42] Jason Mantzoukas: Fair is fair.

[00:36:42] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair. It could've been $34.

[00:36:43] Jason Mantzoukas: For, for a kid-

[00:36:45] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair.

[00:36:45] Jason Mantzoukas: ... how old is Christian Slater in this movie?

[00:36:46] Paul Scheer: I want my $2.

[00:36:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:36:49] Paul Scheer: $2.

[00:36:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, but Paul, it sounds like you're saying that like it's, it's a low amount.

[00:36:54] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, what are you saying?

[00:36:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Are you saying-

[00:36:55] Paul Scheer: I'm just saying, I'm just saying that Mr. Pi-

[00:36:56] Jason Mantzoukas: You're saying that's not much money?

[00:36:58] Paul Scheer: I think that Mr. Piet should've paid it.

[00:37:05] June Diane Raphael: And just to go back to her not being extraordinary and how that was such a powerful choice, even when she changes into her-

[00:37:14] Jason Mantzoukas: Joan of Arc?

[00:37:15] June Diane Raphael: Her... Yes, when she becomes Joan of Arc.

[00:37:17] Paul Scheer: Oh, I wanna ask you about this.

[00:37:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, when she cuts her hair and the first shot is in the reflection of the pool-

[00:37:21] June Diane Raphael: Nah ...

[00:37:21] Jason Mantzoukas: I was like, " this is cinema."

[00:37:22] June Diane Raphael: I could not handle it.

[00:37:25] Paul Scheer: Now, this is-

[00:37:26] Jason Mantzoukas: Honestly, put it in iMAX.

[00:37:28] Paul Scheer: This is a very controversial moment, the haircut.

[00:37:32] June Diane Raphael: Why?

[00:37:32] Jason Mantzoukas: How?

[00:37:33] Paul Scheer: Uh, because this movie was made by, uh, Peter Gruber, I believe, right? The producer who was like Barbra Streisand's-

[00:37:39] Jason Mantzoukas: John robertson. Uh, right.

[00:37:40] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:37:40] Jason Mantzoukas: J- uh, John Peters and Peter Gruber.

[00:37:42] Paul Scheer: Right. And one of them was a hairdresser who became, like the head of a studio.

[00:37:44] Jason Mantzoukas: John Peters.

[00:37:45] Paul Scheer: Right. So, our producer. So-

[00:37:47] Jason Mantzoukas: He is Mechanical Spider in Wild Wild West.

[00:37:49] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:37:49] Jason Mantzoukas: That's John Peters.

[00:37:50] Paul Scheer: So the director and the actors felt like she should have cut her own hair. It should not have been this stylized or cool. Now, I will argue that I lo- thought when she came out it was a very cool moment and I did not see that reading of it. But he was so obsessed with the hair and the haircut and that people were like, "Oh, d- you make her more masculine to come..." Like, like, they... There's a lot of talk about the hair.

[00:38:17] Jason Mantzoukas: This haircut reveal, l- like, honestly-

[00:38:20] June Diane Raphael: It's the best reveal I've ever seen on a film ...

[00:38:22] Jason Mantzoukas: the single greatest haircut ever. The Rachel can get fucked as far as I'm concerned.

[00:38:28] June Diane Raphael: I couldn't believe it.

[00:38:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Um, this, and this, not only that-

[00:38:30] Paul Scheer: And you're talking about Jennifer, you're talking about Jennifer Aniston's haircut in movie Cake?

[00:38:33] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. Not only that-

[00:38:35] Paul Scheer: Really deep ...

[00:38:36] Jason Mantzoukas: But the one-two punch of this and Mary Stuart Masterson's short blonde bob in, in-

[00:38:41] Paul Scheer: Oh, Some Kind of Wonderful

[00:38:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Some Kind of Wonderful-

[00:38:44] June Diane Raphael: Some Kind of Wonderful.

[00:38:44] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Locked in a type for me that I was like, "Grr, rebel girl, short hair, plays drums."

[00:38:50] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:38:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Grr, grr, grr, grr, grr, grr. Crazy.

[00:38:52] Paul Scheer: Yardley Smith would not cut her hair for the movie. She's like, "I will never do that haircut."

[00:38:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[00:38:56] Paul Scheer: That's all wig.

[00:38:57] June Diane Raphael: So what is she... okay. So, so-

[00:38:59] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm okay with that.

[00:39:00] June Diane Raphael: I'm fine with that. But so at the... You're... Are you saying that she wanted to, that Honslinger wanted to, the haircut to look more jagged and like she had cut it herself?

[00:39:07] Paul Scheer: I think that they wanted her... I think, I think that the, a, a lot of the people involved were like, "We want her to take scissors to her own hair and cut it to look like Jo-" Like, the way, like the-

[00:39:17] Jason Mantzoukas: So that it looked like Joan of Arc.

[00:39:18] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:39:18] Jason Mantzoukas: So messy, messy- not, not cool ...

[00:39:21] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:39:21] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:39:21] Paul Scheer: And, and I think that-

[00:39:22] Jason Mantzoukas: 'Cause it looks cool as hell.

[00:39:23] June Diane Raphael: It looks awesome.

[00:39:23] Paul Scheer: It looks... Well, it looks like she went to a fucking salon. Like, I mean... And, and by the way, I'm not picking up on that. I... That's in my research afterwards.

[00:39:30] Jason Mantzoukas: That didn't bother me at all.

[00:39:31] Paul Scheer: I was like, "No, I'm like this is cool. The outfit is cool."

[00:39:33] Jason Mantzoukas: But I'm also on board for the movie 100... I'm in the bag for the movie, so something like that-

[00:39:36] Paul Scheer: And so are they ...

[00:39:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Doesn't bother me.

[00:39:37] Paul Scheer: Right. They, I think they are too 'cause I think they're like, "Oh, you're being so true to the moment." 'Cause I do think that that scene is also, like, like the sex scene that's not a sex scene. Like, when they're in the, the, the final hole of the mini golf. I don't know where they're living. But they seem to be living in the final hole.

[00:39:52] Jason Mantzoukas: I don't, I don't like you saying, I don't like you saying the final hole repeatedly. Concerning what goes on in that castle.

[00:39:57] Paul Scheer: It feels like it's the final hole.

[00:39:59] June Diane Raphael: But here's the interesting thing about the movie, and this is why-

[00:40:03] Paul Scheer: That's where you'd have the most bed space.

[00:40:03] June Diane Raphael: ... even though I lo- loved, I love that this movie is about children. I did strongly connect to it as, as a piece about motherhood because it wasn't, um, there was no teen sexuality in here.

[00:40:16] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:40:16] June Diane Raphael: There was no... The, the chemistry between the two of them was sweet at best, but it never felt like sh-

[00:40:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Horny.

[00:40:24] June Diane Raphael: No.

[00:40:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, in a, in a way that it's about that.

[00:40:26] June Diane Raphael: Yes, but then there were-

[00:40:26] Paul Scheer: Did you think he was sexy?

[00:40:27] June Diane Raphael: ... other times I was like, "Oh, I think this, I think she is a lesbian," and there's chemistry between... I'm serious, but there's another, like, very queer reading of the movie where it's like, oh no, she's, there was something going on.

[00:40:38] There's one moment where she's looking at one of those girls who, that when she's in, like, the Underground Railroad of Billie Jean, and then she-

[00:40:45] Jason Mantzoukas: I cried. I cried.

[00:40:46] June Diane Raphael: ... and then she's taken away.

[00:40:47] Jason Mantzoukas: I cried throughout-

[00:40:47] June Diane Raphael: There's a very intense moment between the two of them. And I was like, "Oh, is this why her chemistry with what's his face is s-

[00:40:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Lloyd.

[00:40:56] June Diane Raphael: With Lloyd is very kind and very lovely and I love his relationship to her, but it is not sexual.

[00:41:04] Jason Mantzoukas: It's not. I agree.

[00:41:05] Paul Scheer: But do you think that, but do you think that he is sexy?

[00:41:08] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:41:08] Paul Scheer: I, I actually thought he played that really well because I feel like that is the right person for her to be attracted to in the sense that he is not, like, a straight up, like, hunky, '80s guy.

[00:41:18] Jason Mantzoukas: What I also liked about it is she, even while accumulating people along the way, she remains, like, the leader of the, the whole group. You know? Like, it's not like some guy comes in and is like, "Okay, you love me now, so I'm the guy." You know? "I'm taking over."

[00:41:33] Paul Scheer: Here's the thing that, that I was upset about.

[00:41:34] Jason Mantzoukas: You know what I mean? Th- th- this could've been shitty, you know?

[00:41:36] Paul Scheer: I, I don't know who said it, but I think it was Alfred Hitchcock. He says, "When you establish a wolfman mask in the first act, you have to pay it off in the third act." Why didn't we get that wolfman mask in the third act?

[00:41:46] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, here's my, my, my version of that is if you twice hit on the head that he needs to take asthma pills, mustn't there be a moment in the third act where he has an asthma attack and needs attention?

[00:41:58] Paul Scheer: Now, I will, I will also say-

[00:42:01] Jason Mantzoukas: But I didn't, it di- I didn't care.

[00:42:03] June Diane Raphael: I didn't care.

[00:42:04] Paul Scheer: Well, I, I will also say that June's-

[00:42:05] Jason Mantzoukas: It, it's a flaw. It's a flaw

[00:42:06] Paul Scheer: I will, I will say that June's point, the, the, uh, the, the queer reading of the movie, I think you could further it by saying than by having Binx dress up as a woman That's a very powerful moment too.

[00:42:18] June Diane Raphael: Very powerful moment because that-

[00:42:18] Paul Scheer: But then he's fucking willy-nilly with that gun. Again, binx and that gun.

[00:42:21] June Diane Raphael: No, but can I tell you, it's not about the gun. It's not about the gun. He gets shot because he is in women's clothing.

[00:42:26] Paul Scheer: Or, okay, can I say-

[00:42:27] June Diane Raphael: I'm serious. That is why there's something very, uh, homophobic about what's happening in that moment, and, like, where their masculinity is, like, e- everybody is thrown into, like, masculine chaos. All of the men of this community, when they see him-

[00:42:44] Paul Scheer: Because they're waving around their guns.

[00:42:45] June Diane Raphael: Yes, and that is why they shoot him. It is not because they think he's a real, he is a real threat with that gun. It is-

[00:42:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, they've already been told Binx's gun isn't real.

[00:42:57] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:42:57] Jason Mantzoukas: They've been told without a shadow of a doubt Binx's gun is not real.

[00:43:02] Paul Scheer: I know I'm gonna take heat for this.

[00:43:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Uh-oh. You can just pod our mics down.

[00:43:09] Paul Scheer: But man, oh, man, they don't make fake guns like they used to. I- I...

[00:43:16] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, it did make me think, I agree, and it did make me think g- because of, like, what you're saying, like, he's flashing it around. Guns were so prominent.

[00:43:27] Paul Scheer: I had guns-

[00:43:27] Jason Mantzoukas: I had a little gun in my belt all the time.

[00:43:30] Paul Scheer: I had guns-

[00:43:31] Jason Mantzoukas: In the back of my, in the back like Magnum- a gun.

[00:43:34] Paul Scheer: Yeah, I had guns all over my house.

[00:43:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Yep.

[00:43:37] Paul Scheer: I had them in a drawer, and then there was a moment where I liked a girl, and I was like, "I have to throw away my boy things to become a man." And I remember collecting all my guns and walking out to the dumpster behind my apartment building.

[00:43:51] June Diane Raphael: This feels very emotionally manipulative towards me.

[00:43:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, was that girl J-, was that girl June? Was that girl June?

[00:43:57] Paul Scheer: No, but

[00:43:57] June Diane Raphael: 'Cause now I'm feeling for you, and I feel like-

[00:43:59] Paul Scheer: No, and it was like, and I, and I, but I got all my guns together, but I had so many guns, and none of them had any orange on them in-

[00:44:07] Jason Mantzoukas: No.

[00:44:07] Paul Scheer: Any way, so much so that my, my mom would tell me a story that my... And look, I don't know. Maybe my parents are liars, but this story I, I wanna believe as being true.

[00:44:18] Jason Mantzoukas: I can't wait to read your mom's book.

[00:44:22] Paul Scheer: That, um, that I had left a gun on the backseat of my grandfather's car, and the cops came into a restaurant in which he was eating and pulled a gun on him thinking that he had a gun out in his car, and then he had to explain it was his grandson's gun. And all I'm saying is, those guns were fun.

[00:44:42] Jason Mantzoukas: Ugh.

[00:44:42] June Diane Raphael: Well, I will say, so I watched this with our, our oldest son, and at that part, he was like, "But why, why were the guns in that store?" And I was like, "Oh." He's like, "Isn't it a toy store?" And I was like, "Yeah, it is."

[00:44:54] He's like, "But, uh, but, like, why were the- they selling guns there?" And I was like, "Those are toy guns." And he's like, "But they don't look like Nerf guns." I'm like, "They're not Nerf guns." So it was a real, he was blown away by those guns.

[00:45:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:45:08] Jason Mantzoukas: And, and how the... And what was, what you prized so much about them was their authentic look.

[00:45:13] June Diane Raphael: They looked really real.

[00:45:14] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. You know? That, that, uh-

[00:45:16] Paul Scheer: I had a Walther PPK that looked great. Oh. It was a James Bond gun. I was-

[00:45:19] June Diane Raphael: Now, are you two gonna start some sort of a campaign to bring back realistic children's guns?

[00:45:25] Paul Scheer: Why not?

[00:45:26] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. Absolutely.

[00:45:28] Paul Scheer: But, but I could tell you that every one of these movies fucked up-

[00:45:31] Jason Mantzoukas: How Did This Get Made Guns.

[00:45:33] Paul Scheer: We are gonna-

[00:45:34] Jason Mantzoukas: Our new, our new merch.

[00:45:35] Paul Scheer: ... we started making guns for-

[00:45:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Toy guns. Realistic looking toy guns.

[00:45:39] Paul Scheer: From our favorite How Did This Get Made-

[00:45:41] Jason Mantzoukas: From a film podcast. I loved, I loved that the, that Lloyd's house has a water slide into the pool.

[00:45:51] June Diane Raphael: Obsessed with it.

[00:45:51] Jason Mantzoukas: And they all go down... This is what's great about the movie is that, yes, it is, like, you start the movie and it's like, it jumps in straight away. He, uh, is, tries to rape her. She, he gets shot. They're on the run. They are, they do, they go on so many different things. Then they get to Lloyd's house, and it stops down and almost becomes a John Hughes movie for a little while.

[00:46:07] June Diane Raphael: Except she never goes on the slide.

[00:46:09] Jason Mantzoukas: That's what I was about to say, that he gets down there, Lloyd, and he looks up, and she's rapturously watching Joan of Arc, and the rest of the movie is her becoming Joan of Arc.

[00:46:20] June Diane Raphael: So great.

[00:46:20] Jason Mantzoukas: And then there's, they burn an effigy of her at the end, and I was like, "This is cinema."

[00:46:28] June Diane Raphael: Crazy.

[00:46:29] Paul Scheer: But all I could think of while there was a powerful moment was all those local artisans, all their work destroyed.

[00:46:38] Jason Mantzoukas: All those, all those adults?

[00:46:39] Paul Scheer: All those, all the-

[00:46:40] Jason Mantzoukas: All those adults being harmed?

[00:46:41] Paul Scheer: I think that, I look everything I know about Mr. Peat-

[00:46:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Adult point of view.

[00:46:44] Paul Scheer: ... All I think about Mr. Peat is that he is using the local youth art scene to his advantage. Those are loo- great kids. Ugh. That's a young Shepard Fairey out there who got abused by Mr. Peat. Yeah, he's gonna rape you one way or the other.

[00:46:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[00:46:56] June Diane Raphael: And that's true because that's ... No, no, no. Because that was why-

[00:46:59] Jason Mantzoukas: That is not a pull quote you want out there.

[00:47:02] June Diane Raphael: ... the, yes. But, but he is right, b- and that's what's so sophisticated about the movie-

[00:47:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:47:06] June Diane Raphael: ... is that he's not a mustache-twirling villain. He is-

[00:47:09] Jason Mantzoukas: He's got a mustache though ...

[00:47:10] June Diane Raphael: He does have a mustache, but he is victimizing this young woman and then making money off of her fame.

[00:47:16] Jason Mantzoukas: And then profiting off of her image.

[00:47:17] June Diane Raphael: It's, it's so fas- I'll be thinking about it-

[00:47:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:47:20] June Diane Raphael: ... for a long time.

[00:47:21] Jason Mantzoukas: I loved all of ... This is, so I, and I know I've, I'm a broken record, apologies, but I love how much the movie exists just from the children's point of view, including when they make the videotape, they send, like, a five-year-old into the police station and he's just like-

[00:47:37] June Diane Raphael: My favorite moment And by the way, though-

[00:47:41] Jason Mantzoukas: And then he watches it with them. I was like, "Fuck yes."

[00:47:45] June Diane Raphael: But didn't you feel like when they said, didn't you feel like when they said, "Who gave this to you?" That he just, he knew-

[00:47:52] Jason Mantzoukas: He knew.

[00:47:52] June Diane Raphael: ... but he wasn't gonna tell them.

[00:47:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, because all the kids know everything-

[00:47:53] June Diane Raphael: And that was, Zach's a great actor.

[00:47:55] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Because they all hang out at the headquarters of the Billie Jean Underground Railroad. I didn't know what that place was, but I loved it regardless.

[00:48:04] June Diane Raphael: I loved it.

[00:48:05] Paul Scheer: I, I wanna watch her, her tape. This is her video. Uh-

[00:48:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Great.

[00:48:09] Paul Scheer: ... here we go.

[00:48:19] Movie Audio: Now that I look at that tape, the one we here earlier in the day-

[00:48:19] Jason Mantzoukas: So hot.

[00:48:19] Movie Audio: ... I'm Billie Jean Davey.

[00:48:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Can you pause?

[00:48:19] Movie Audio: And I wanna set the record straight.

[00:48:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Can you pause, Paul?

[00:48:20] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:48:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Pause. This is just a wetsuit she cut the sleeves off of. The single dangly earring. This is actual sexuality right here. This is-

[00:48:30] Paul Scheer: I-

[00:48:30] Jason Mantzoukas: My mind exploding as a teenager.

[00:48:32] Paul Scheer: As you're saying it, I'm seeing it, but I thought that was a pair of glasses that she fashioned into an earring.

[00:48:38] Jason Mantzoukas: No.

[00:48:39] Paul Scheer: I thought she popped out the lenses-

[00:48:40] Jason Mantzoukas: The single dangly earring.

[00:48:41] Paul Scheer: She's like, "Earring."

[00:48:41] Jason Mantzoukas: I'm assuming the armband is what, is the sleeve that she cut off. I'm not sure, but it, the color matches.

[00:48:47] June Diane Raphael: The only thing I was upset by, 'cause I was so taken with this too, but then I was like, "Did Katy Perry, like-

[00:48:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, whoa ...

[00:48:53] June Diane Raphael: Model her entire brand and look off of this?"

[00:48:58] Jason Mantzoukas: I could get lost in Helen Slater's eyes. Those beautiful pools of green.

[00:49:04] June Diane Raphael: Same.

[00:49:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Ay, ay, ay.

[00:49:06] Paul Scheer: I, I do feel bad because Helen Slater is great and she had Supergirl, which we did on the show, and this. And I'm like-

[00:49:13] June Diane Raphael: And can I s-

[00:49:14] Paul Scheer: Yeah, yeah.

[00:49:14] June Diane Raphael: ... my favorite performance, and, and she means a lot to me, from, um, City Slickers.

[00:49:20] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:49:20] June Diane Raphael: Thank you.

[00:49:20] Paul Scheer: By the way.

[00:49:21] June Diane Raphael: That is such a beautiful performance ...

[00:49:22] Paul Scheer: Re- Recently just got her doctorate in mythology.

[00:49:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, wow.

[00:49:25] June Diane Raphael: No surprise.

[00:49:27] Paul Scheer: Um, but let, let's just watch the tape 'cause I do have a couple more things.

[00:49:30] Jason Mantzoukas: And Helen Slater and Christian Slater, unrelated.

[00:49:32] Paul Scheer: Unrelated. Unrelated. Uh, Christian Slater thought it would be so cool to marry her because then they wouldn't have to change names. Okay.

[00:49:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, also because she's absolutely gorgeous.

[00:49:42] Paul Scheer: Sure.

[00:49:44] Movie Audio: I'm not a liar, I'm not a thief, and neither is my brother.

[00:49:52] Hello, Ma. Sorry, that's him. Mom, I don't know when we'll be coming home, but we love you. I know people are making up stories about us. Don't you believe them. As for you, Mr. Pyatt, you are so sleazy.

[00:50:09] Yeah.

[00:50:09] You think that you can do anything you want and then lie about it, and we just have to take it, because what are we? Just a bunch of kids. Well, not this time. From now on, we're doing this our way.

[00:50:20] Paul Scheer: I'm gonna pause it for one second. I guess the thing that was frustrating to me is I'm going through the kid point of view. You're mad, you've been wronged, you're on the run.

[00:50:29] This motherfucker at a gas station's saying that you robbed him. You didn't fucking rob him, right? So that's fine. But why is she respecting Mr. Pyatt, whatever the fuck his name is, by not saying, "This guy tried to rape me"? Why do we hide that away? I'm like, "Just say it. Say it so everyone hears it." It's so, like, under the table.

[00:50:49] Like, "I think it was, maybe it was that." Like, it, like, it never is fully said out loud, and it's like, why are you protecting this monster?

[00:50:55] Jason Mantzoukas: She says it at the end.

[00:50:56] Paul Scheer: She, at the end. Yeah.

[00:50:57] Jason Mantzoukas: She says it at the end in front of everybody.

[00:50:58] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:50:59] Jason Mantzoukas: Because she does the, she calls him sleazy in this.

[00:51:01] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:51:01] Jason Mantzoukas: But she does not say it in the video.

[00:51:03] Paul Scheer: But here's what I'm saying. You wanna get an army, you say, "This guy tried to rape me,"

[00:51:07] June Diane Raphael: Don't know if you'll get an army.

[00:51:08] Jason Mantzoukas: I, no, I don't think if you're from the p- in the trailer park in 1980 whatever-

[00:51:12] June Diane Raphael: My reading of it is just that she's, it's not even, that's not even available to her. That to-

[00:51:17] Paul Scheer: To say that.

[00:51:17] June Diane Raphael: ... to, to say that because she's not worried about her own needs in that way. So I go back to her as a caretaker because she is trying to get her brother's bike.

[00:51:26] Paul Scheer: Right, so she, this may, this might have happened to her numerous times. Like, or, like, she might have had a lot of creepy guys, so that's, like, not the lead story. The lead story is that, yeah, this guy got shot because, a- and the- Yeah ... and the-

[00:51:37] Jason Mantzoukas: And at the beginning they do a l- I mean, the bare minimum of a little bit of work where Hubie and his friends are multiple times bullying and harassing them, right?

[00:51:46] Paul Scheer: Yeah, there's a lot. There's a reading to say that, like, well, maybe in that h- in that harassment that he may have died. It could be a Jacob's Ladder situation all through Blinks' point of view.

[00:51:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, who could have died?

[00:51:54] Paul Scheer: Blinks.

[00:51:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Binks?

[00:51:55] Paul Scheer: Blinks.

[00:51:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, who's Blinks?

[00:51:58] Paul Scheer: Jar Jar Blinks.

[00:51:59] Jason Mantzoukas: Jar Jar Blinks?

[00:52:01] Paul Scheer: Jar Jar Blinks, um-

[00:52:03] Jason Mantzoukas: The, the senator from Nabloo?

[00:52:07] June Diane Raphael: Here's what I-

[00:52:07] Paul Scheer: Admiral Piatt from Star Wars.

[00:52:10] Jason Mantzoukas: It's a trap ...

[00:52:11] June Diane Raphael: I wanted to know more about what happened to the dad.

[00:52:16] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.

[00:52:16] June Diane Raphael: Did, did, what- I don't know. We, we just know what we know.

[00:52:17] Paul Scheer: We don't ask those que- we don't ask those questions on the Texas Riviera. He went out to mine oil on a deep sea rig.

[00:52:24] June Diane Raphael: And that was that.

[00:52:25] Paul Scheer: He was pulled up to a moon mission to go-

[00:52:25] Jason Mantzoukas: He's a, he's a land man.

[00:52:26] Paul Scheer: And so that's a part-

[00:52:26] Jason Mantzoukas: He's a land man out in Texas.

[00:52:28] June Diane Raphael: But that's a part of why I think it goes back to your question of, like, why didn't she say anything about this guy? Because it seemed to me, from everything, the way she's been interacting with the teenage boys, the way she's been interacting with, like, the lore around her father seems like a dead beat, that men are

[00:52:45] It's not even to be dealt with. They are who they are, and she has her head down and is trying to live her life.

[00:52:52] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I think that's true. I think another reading on it is I think all of the children in this movie operate from the point of view of we will not be believed.

[00:53:02] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:53:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, we, our stories will not be b- a- adults control our lives, and we will not be uh, justice will not be happening for us.

[00:53:11] Paul Scheer: And how cool would it have been in the final scene for that dude with the fucking belt, the child abuser, to be like, "And I got one final belt whipping coming up for you," whp-psh, and he fucking gets in there for a final scene.

[00:53:25] Jason Mantzoukas: To who?

[00:53:26] June Diane Raphael: To who?

[00:53:26] Paul Scheer: To the man, to Mr. Piatt.

[00:53:28] June Diane Raphael: Oh, okay.

[00:53:28] Paul Scheer: Not her. I'm not a fucking sicko crazy person.

[00:53:32] Jason Mantzoukas: Well-

[00:53:33] Paul Scheer: I'm just saying, I'm just saying-

[00:53:35] Jason Mantzoukas: They all ... Uh, just, I wanna s-

[00:53:36] June Diane Raphael: We all-

[00:53:36] Jason Mantzoukas: They all ... You've primed them-

[00:53:38] Paul Scheer: I know ...

[00:53:39] Jason Mantzoukas: to think that-

[00:53:39] Paul Scheer: I did.

[00:53:40] Jason Mantzoukas: ... that's what you want.

[00:53:40] Paul Scheer: No, no, no, no. I, what I wanted was a-

[00:53:42] Jason Mantzoukas: How great would it have been if finally belt guy gets to punish Billy Jean?

[00:53:46] Paul Scheer: I would've liked, I would've liked, I-

[00:53:48] Jason Mantzoukas: Cause finally someone's gotta keep these kids in line. Why not belt dad?

[00:53:52] Paul Scheer: I would've liked this-

[00:53:53] Jason Mantzoukas: You started this episode pro-belt dad ...

[00:53:55] Paul Scheer: I would've liked-

[00:53:57] Jason Mantzoukas: And you are ending pro-belt dad.

[00:53:58] Paul Scheer: I would've liked belt dad to be like this, watching that video on TV. He's like, "Yeah. Fuck yeah, Billy Jean." And then he goes, "I'm gonna find ... I'm gonna go to that beach, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna now be a part of the Army. I'm not a child anymore, but I, maybe I'm acting like a child because I don't know how to actually verbalize how to treat a child. So I'm not an adult. So I am a child, but I'm fucking I gotta take out my anger on an adult, getting so mad at my job." And then he goes there.

[00:54:25] Jason Mantzoukas: You think belt dad has a job?

[00:54:27] June Diane Raphael: Just so you know. Just so you know.

[00:54:29] Paul Scheer: He lost his job 'cause his wife left him, and he's taking it all out on his son.

[00:54:32] Jason Mantzoukas: He's off abusing his son in the middle of the day.

[00:54:33] Paul Scheer: He's taking it- he's taking it all out on his son 'cause his wife is fucking some guy at the bar that she works at.

[00:54:37] Jason Mantzoukas: So it's the woman's problem?

[00:54:39] Paul Scheer: No.

[00:54:39] June Diane Raphael: Just so you know-

[00:54:39] Paul Scheer: He's a single dad ...

[00:54:40] June Diane Raphael: When that scene was-

[00:54:41] Paul Scheer: He doesn't have the tools ...

[00:54:42] June Diane Raphael: single dad, when Gus and I were watching this part with belt guy, we were screaming at the TV, "Kill him. Kill him."

[00:54:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, I loved when the dad first starts yelling at Billy Jean.

[00:54:54] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:54:55] Jason Mantzoukas: And then he looks, and all the kids are in the window.

[00:54:57] June Diane Raphael: Oh, it's a b- it's a, it's-

[00:54:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Right?

[00:54:58] June Diane Raphael: It's- It's an amazing- It's, it w- It's amazing ...

[00:55:00] Jason Mantzoukas: Goosebumps.

[00:55:01] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:55:01] Jason Mantzoukas: Amazing. It is so good.

[00:55:02] Paul Scheer: Like weapons.

[00:55:03] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:55:03] Paul Scheer: It was like-

[00:55:03] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:55:03] Paul Scheer: ... oh, shit, the kids are here.

[00:55:05] Let's go to the audience, because I know they probably all agree with me. No, all right. Everybody- Uh, welcome to the part where you... Remember, you know, this is a show. You don't have to attack me. But- ... we're gonna talk about, uh, we're gonna talk about Billie Jean. We're gonna ask you or answer your questions.

[00:55:21] Like, let's see what we got here. Hi, I have a question all the way back here. What's your name?

[00:55:25] June Diane Raphael: I'm Kristin. First, I wanna let June know the reason that Binx's dad is not there is because they mention he's dead. They got the bike from the insurance. It's a very throwaway line in that. But my question is, why did they, when they were announcing what the car they were in, why did no one ever mention, "Hey, we're looking for a car that has a giant trailer parked-"

[00:55:45] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[00:55:45] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:55:45] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[00:55:46] June Diane Raphael: I did wonder about that.

[00:55:46] Paul Scheer: It- that is a defining feature of it.

[00:55:48] Jason Mantzoukas: The car is so identifying and they don't seem to be going far from Corpus Christi at all.

[00:55:53] June Diane Raphael: At all.

[00:55:53] Paul Scheer: They seem to be, they really do seem to be... One of the things I did love about it, and, like, I love that kid logic of it, there's a scene where they go, "They're in a late-model sedan," and she's like, "Late model, my ass." It's like, I didn't know what... Yeah, the station wagon. She's like, "I didn't know what-"

[00:56:06] Jason Mantzoukas: But I loved, I loved... And we talked about it a little bit in the part where they do the car chase, and then it s- it goes straight into Putter getting her period. The same thing is like they shoot Mr., uh, the rapist guy. They jump in the car, they go away, and she immediately pulls into a gas station 'cause she's gotta get gas or her dad's gonna be mad.

[00:56:23] And I was like, yes, this is kid logic.

[00:56:25] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[00:56:25] Jason Mantzoukas: It's like, "What? Fuck, we just shot somebody. But my dad's gonna be mad if I don't get gas." "Go, go, go, go, go."

[00:56:31] Paul Scheer: All right, uh, your name, your question.

[00:56:33] Audience Member: Evan. And if the whole point of the revolution is to kind of revolt against the rapist's actions, then why are they buying T-shirts from him?

[00:56:43] Jason Mantzoukas: They don't know.

[00:56:44] Paul Scheer: Well, they don't know.

[00:56:44] June Diane Raphael: They don't know.

[00:56:44] Jason Mantzoukas: They don't know.

[00:56:45] Paul Scheer: That's the whole thing. That's what I'm saying, like-

[00:56:45] Jason Mantzoukas: The people buying the merch didn't know that he was the villain.

[00:56:49] Paul Scheer: Right.

[00:56:50] Jason Mantzoukas: And when Billie Je- that i- that is the culmination-

[00:56:52] Paul Scheer: But what do they think he is? Because that's the question that I have. What could he have been? He was shot, so he's like, "I'm profiteering off of her." Like, what is his point of view? He's like, "Get her, but also buy this merch." I don't get what, like, where the connection is. Like, you're buying it from the victim who is using the person who hurt... Uh, it's, it's a weird-

[00:57:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Does anybody out here wanna get Paul while he's out there?

[00:57:19] Paul Scheer: But, I mean, but I do, I mean, the lo-

[00:57:20] Jason Mantzoukas: You just called him the victim.

[00:57:22] Paul Scheer: ... I mean, he gets the idea, like, he's profite- he's profit-

[00:57:23] Jason Mantzoukas: He's the victim. That's really interesting.

[00:57:24] Paul Scheer: He has been depicted.

[00:57:25] June Diane Raphael: Really interesting.

[00:57:25] Paul Scheer: No, no, no, no, no. Hold up. The, to everybody inte- we can all agree that everybody sees him as the victim. He was shot by this person, but yet his store is packed, he's selling tons of merch. Like-

[00:57:39] June Diane Raphael: Well, maybe it's, maybe it's sort of sending up, like, consumerist culture and how we just, we, we will buy.

[00:57:46] Paul Scheer: So it's a satirical take?

[00:57:47] June Diane Raphael: I do think it, the point is valid. Like, yes-

[00:57:49] Paul Scheer: John Wilkes Booth selling Lincoln hats.

[00:57:51] June Diane Raphael: ... they do know, they do know- They don't know he's a rapist, but they do know he was shot by them.

[00:57:59] Paul Scheer: Right. Right.

[00:58:00] June Diane Raphael: Right? And so-

[00:58:02] Paul Scheer: But why, so but we're, we're, but we're rallying around her, so if we're rallying around her, he is bad.

[00:58:09] June Diane Raphael: Yeah. I, he, I s- I-

[00:58:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, i'm sorry. I think w- I think that he is profiting off of her because he is saying, "This person shot me."

[00:58:18] Paul Scheer: All right.

[00:58:19] Jason Mantzoukas: But if I know that-

[00:58:19] June Diane Raphael: Oh, yeah, that's the thing. I think he's kind of changed his narrative, and we see it in the moment where he's trying to upsell those posters. Like, he is, he will tell them whatever they wanna hear, and he's excited to be a part of the story. I don't think people think like, "Oh, he's trying to get her."

[00:58:36] Jason Mantzoukas: I don't think kids-

[00:58:37] June Diane Raphael: I don't know ...

[00:58:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Teenagers- buying the shirt think they're financing a rapist.

[00:58:41] Paul Scheer: Well, we know that they-

[00:58:42] June Diane Raphael: Definitely not. Definitely not.

[00:58:42] Paul Scheer: ... well, that they, we know that they don't.

[00:58:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Right.

[00:58:44] Paul Scheer: But we are excited that he was shot for reasons unexplained.

[00:58:47] Jason Mantzoukas: We, the audience are.

[00:58:48] Paul Scheer: Yes. Right. Well, well, no, I'm gonna say Texas. Like, Texas, based on the radio reports and stuff like that, story is man is shot by woman, she's a hero. Like, there's no more, there's no more to the story that... i'm just, like, I'm, I'm not even trying to be, uh, funny on this. I'm like, really, like, that is, like, the narrative of the movie. Right?

[00:59:08] June Diane Raphael: Wrong.

[00:59:09] Paul Scheer: Wrong? Wait, wait, tell me how. Wait, tell me how.

[00:59:11] Jason Mantzoukas: I don't think that's right.

[00:59:11] June Diane Raphael: Just wrong.

[00:59:12] Paul Scheer: Tell me how.

[00:59:13] Jason Mantzoukas: This guy over here has got it.

[00:59:14] Paul Scheer: Who? Where? Where? Where?

[00:59:15] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, just wrong.

[00:59:16] Paul Scheer: All right, because-

[00:59:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, it's Tim.

[00:59:18] Paul Scheer: ... all right, tell... Well, I trust Tim.

[00:59:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Tim's got it.

[00:59:19] June Diane Raphael: Oh, yeah. Good.

[00:59:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Tim's got it. Guys, everybody can relax.

[00:59:22] Paul Scheer: 'Cause, uh, 'cause I'm going, I'm-

[00:59:23] Jason Mantzoukas: Tim's gonna school Paul.

[00:59:24] Paul Scheer: I'm going... I would love it. I'm just, like, saying this from the lo- the logic of the movie states that all the people know is that she shot this person for no reason.

[00:59:35] Audience Member: Uh, well, they don't know that it's for no reason. The, the reason, it's not just he shot her. There's a whole conspiracy.

[00:59:41] Paul Scheer: Okay.

[00:59:42] Audience Member: He comes downstairs and says, "These kids had this whole plan to rob me."

[00:59:46] Paul Scheer: Okay, got it.

[00:59:46] Audience Member: "It was her job to get me upstairs and distract me while the two of them opened the register."

[00:59:50] Paul Scheer: Okay.

[00:59:51] Audience Member: But the reason why, it's, it's not like, "Yay, she's a hero." It's more like a Bonnie and Clyde situation.

[00:59:57] Paul Scheer: Got it. Okay.

[00:59:57] Audience Member: Like, these kids are on the run for shooting an adult.

[01:00:00] Jason Mantzoukas: Cool.

[01:00:01] Audience Member: But, like, in a Bonnie and Clyde kind of way.

[01:00:02] Paul Scheer: Okay, so there, okay, I like that. So it's like, it's like Natural Born Killers. Now, this is ba-

[01:00:06] Jason Mantzoukas: It's kid, again, it's kid logic. It's kids versus adults.

[01:00:08] Paul Scheer: Now, by the way, this is, we'll talk about this in a little bit, it is based on a true story. Um, uh, but-

[01:00:13] Jason Mantzoukas: And what I think is interesting is the majority of the kids that are in the movie are young kids.

[01:00:18] Paul Scheer: Okay.

[01:00:18] Jason Mantzoukas: It's not like it's a bunch of 19 years old. 19, it's not like River's Edge.

[01:00:22] Paul Scheer: Let me go back to Tim just because I don't wanna, like, say something and then walk away from you and say, but- Would you buy... The B- in the Bonnie and Clyde situation, you would be supporting the person robbed.

[01:00:38] Audience Member: Kind of.

[01:00:39] Paul Scheer: All right. I mean, I guess, well, that's-

[01:00:40] June Diane Raphael: I don't think-

[01:00:41] Paul Scheer: Well, yeah, yeah.

[01:00:42] Audience Member: Supporting the person robbed?

[01:00:43] Paul Scheer: Well, yeah, because Mr. P- No. Because, like, that's what they're doing, right?

[01:00:45] June Diane Raphael: But I also, by the way, but I think you're putting the lens of, like, this moment we're in right now where we feel powerless as, as just citizens. And so buying things intentionally from people we think are good and wanna support is even a concept.

[01:01:00] Paul Scheer: I guess in a way-

[01:01:01] June Diane Raphael: I don't, I don't think-

[01:01:01] Paul Scheer: ... when Trump gets shot in the face, we are buying those fucking coins with him getting shot in the face. But we're not buying it-

[01:01:07] June Diane Raphael: I don't think that that would-

[01:01:07] Paul Scheer: We're buying it from Trump. We're not, we're not, we're not.

[01:01:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, we're buying those coins?

[01:01:11] Paul Scheer: I'm not. But it would be-

[01:01:12] Jason Mantzoukas: When you say we're buying those coins, the we I'm assuming is you and June?

[01:01:19] Paul Scheer: You never know what's gonna go up in value. Funko Pops, Trump coins. No, but I guess it would be like, I, I, I just have never seen... I get it. I mean, I get it. I get-

[01:01:30] Jason Mantzoukas: You are, it's interesting, for this movie, you are unwilling to suspend disbelief for certain logical elements.

[01:01:35] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:01:36] Paul Scheer: This movie is supposed to be straight and narrow, this could have happened.

[01:01:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Why?

[01:01:40] Paul Scheer: It's not fantasy.

[01:01:42] Jason Mantzoukas: What?

[01:01:42] Paul Scheer: It's not fantasy, this movie.

[01:01:44] Jason Mantzoukas: How is this different from Pump Up the Volume?

[01:01:47] June Diane Raphael: Oh, that's a good question.

[01:01:47] Paul Scheer: Uh, well, Pump Up the Volume does have some real world stakes where they come and they kind of break in the house with the... Yeah.

[01:01:52] Jason Mantzoukas: How is this different?

[01:01:54] Paul Scheer: Well, they-

[01:01:54] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, we're rooting for Christian Slater in that and he-

[01:01:57] Paul Scheer: Well, 'cause Christian Slater's running a pirate radio station. He's not, like, running around shooting people. I mean, like, it's like, he's like, he's like-

[01:02:04] Jason Mantzoukas: He's not running around shooting people.

[01:02:05] Paul Scheer: ... "Hey, everybody, listen to Sonic Youth." It's like, well, yeah, sure. I mean, it's, like, cool, but I'm not-

[01:02:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Hey, breaking the law is breaking the law, baby ...

[01:02:10] Paul Scheer: all right, I guess. Yeah, he's on the F- the FCC. Uh, I love that movie. Anyway, I haven't rewatched it in years. Uh, all right, hi. What's your name, what's your question?

[01:02:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I'd love to do that.

[01:02:20] Audience Member: David.

[01:02:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Are we gonna start doing good movies now?

[01:02:22] June Diane Raphael: I guess so.

[01:02:23] Paul Scheer: We gotta do Seven Minutes in Heaven. We got to, we should do-

[01:02:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Ooh, Seven Minutes in Heaven. Yes.

[01:02:26] Paul Scheer: All right. Uh, hi.

[01:02:26] Audience Member: Hi. Uh, David, uh, so the mall scene. Why do the cops, like, the whole Billie Jean task force is there and then the shop owner's son decide to jump in-

[01:02:37] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[01:02:37] Audience Member: ... and chase her? Like-

[01:02:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. Because he wants, he wants revenge ...

[01:02:39] Audience Member: Why, at that point, did they not let him go? Like, "Wait, you're not on our side here."

[01:02:42] Paul Scheer: Well, this is another moment I had where all adults are dumb. And like at that moment, you go, Peter Coyote has to be like, "We gotta fucking cut this guy loose." Like, I mean, 'cause that, like-

[01:02:52] Jason Mantzoukas: He does, basically.

[01:02:52] Paul Scheer: Right, 'cause it's like-

[01:02:53] Jason Mantzoukas: He ne- he always thinks he's a bad guy, and then-

[01:02:55] Paul Scheer: But what was the plan? Why did he need to bring his son in there to tackle her when it was full of cops?

[01:03:01] Jason Mantzoukas: He's on the news later saying, "I didn't trust the cops. I wanted to do it my way."

[01:03:06] Paul Scheer: Oh, okay.

[01:03:06] June Diane Raphael: My way.

[01:03:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Basically. And they- He says on, literally on the news-

[01:03:10] Paul Scheer: They should've all worn cuffs. They should've all worn cuffs.

[01:03:12] Audience Member: ... Can I just say, it's, it's a lot. She becomes a legend because of basically pretty priv- privilege, that that creepy guy taking all the photos, if there hadn't been the hot photo of her coming out of the water like Phoebe Cates in, in Fast Times, they wouldn't care about her being a hero. That's what it was.

[01:03:28] Paul Scheer: I see. I see. I see. Now we're talking some truth.

[01:03:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay.

[01:03:30] June Diane Raphael: Sure. Sure.

[01:03:31] Paul Scheer: All right, what's your name?

[01:03:32] June Diane Raphael: No, it was a really, it was a really important photo.

[01:03:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:03:36] Paul Scheer: Um, hi, what, your name and your question.

[01:03:37] June Diane Raphael: It's true.

[01:03:38] Audience Member: My, I'm Jane. Um, in answer to your question about why she didn't say in the tape "He tried to rape me," because it's not her responsibility.

[01:03:47] June Diane Raphael: Thank you.

[01:03:47] Audience Member: Are you asking why women don't come forward more?

[01:03:50] June Diane Raphael: Thank you. Thank you so much.

[01:03:51] Paul Scheer: No, no, I, I, what, no, I, no, no, and I, and, like-

[01:03:56] June Diane Raphael: Thank you so much for saying that.

[01:03:58] Paul Scheer: Guys-

[01:03:58] June Diane Raphael: I was, yeah, I couldn't agree more

[01:03:58] Paul Scheer: ... uh, do you want to sit here for two hours and listen to an earnest discussion of this movie? I'm providing a point of view that's necessary for the show. Now, here's the thing. Um- What I was gonna say was that, but I did feel at that point, as this guy's growing in this world, why be coy? Why protect that guy? Not, like, and I understand your point of view, that she doesn't h- have to do it.

[01:04:21] June Diane Raphael: She's not protecting him.

[01:04:23] Paul Scheer: She's not protecting him.

[01:04:24] June Diane Raphael: No.

[01:04:24] Jason Mantzoukas: No, I think, you know-

[01:04:26] Paul Scheer: She's protecting herself.

[01:04:26] June Diane Raphael: She's protecting herself, yeah.

[01:04:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. She's a kid, he's an adult. He has all the power, she has none.

[01:04:30] Paul Scheer: But yet she does it in front of everybody at the end.

[01:04:32] Audience Member: Well, and honestly, in the moment, I had the same question.

[01:04:35] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[01:04:36] Audience Member: But then I realized that I was, like, playing into that whole, like, victim shaming.

[01:04:40] Paul Scheer: Right.

[01:04:41] Audience Member: So yeah, it just-

[01:04:42] June Diane Raphael: She can do with her story of what happened in that attic annex whatever she cares to do with it. She can never speak about it again, she can speak about it a- as every day. She can do with it whatever she pleases. That's it, Paul.

[01:04:56] Paul Scheer: Guys, I'm trying to-

[01:04:58] June Diane Raphael: Whatever she pleases.

[01:04:59] Paul Scheer: ... keep it light. this is not a-

[01:05:02] June Diane Raphael: I don't know.

[01:05:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow.

[01:05:04] June Diane Raphael: I know you want to, but you keep on walking us right there.

[01:05:08] Paul Scheer: All right. Yeah. Hey, what's your name? What's your question?

[01:05:10] Audience Member: Hey, my name's Chris. Um, I may have to rethink the way I saw this movie if this doesn't land, but did anyone else think that the Slaters were dating in the first 10 minutes?

[01:05:19] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:05:19] Paul Scheer: Everybody did.

[01:05:20] June Diane Raphael: Everybody did.

[01:05:21] Audience Member: Well, I just, I thought Zooks would bring it up.

[01:05:23] Paul Scheer: No, he can't.

[01:05:24] Jason Mantzoukas: You thought I would bring it up that I thought-

[01:05:25] Paul Scheer: He's locked himself into this position.

[01:05:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, no, because I saw this at such a young age, and it, it imprinted on me is that they are just brother and sister. Um-

[01:05:32] Paul Scheer: Before you know they're brother and sister.

[01:05:34] Jason Mantzoukas: ... but, but that scene, but that scene where they're going swimming-

[01:05:36] Audience Member: No, yeah, it all starts, you don't see them, and then they're swimming, and then she's-

[01:05:38] Jason Mantzoukas: I hear you, man. I hear you ...

[01:05:39] Audience Member: She's playing around in the water with her finger.

[01:05:42] Jason Mantzoukas: I hear you.

[01:05:42] Audience Member: Yeah.

[01:05:42] Jason Mantzoukas: But do, you do know that when the-

[01:05:44] Audience Member: Yes, I thought it was hot, Zooks. Yes.

[01:05:48] Paul Scheer: Thank you. Finally, one person just a little bit. I'm a fucking loner out here.

[01:05:52] June Diane Raphael: Hey, man. Can I tell you though, that-

[01:05:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Check out that guy's Google search history.

[01:05:54] June Diane Raphael: Can I tell you I actually thought it was an, yet another breathtakingly beautiful scene when he thinks she's been eaten by an alligator.

[01:06:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[01:06:04] June Diane Raphael: And the length of time they spent with that, and the fear. And you see he's a little kid and, and she's his protector, and he doesn't know what life is gonna be like.

[01:06:12] Paul Scheer: I thought it was like she's terrorizing him.

[01:06:13] Jason Mantzoukas: And I thought it was breathtakingly beautiful that she wasn't wearing a bra and was swimming in a crop top. The movie i- can be read so many-

[01:06:21] June Diane Raphael: She's very brave.

[01:06:21] Jason Mantzoukas: ... and received so many ways.

[01:06:25] Paul Scheer: All right. Yeah, just, what's your name, what's your question?

[01:06:27] Audience Member: I'm Jill. I just wanna comment, Jason, I squealed when you mentioned this movie the other day on the show. I remember I watched this with my mom as a teenager.

[01:06:36] June Diane Raphael: Oh, amazing.

[01:06:36] Audience Member: And when it was over she's like, "I think we need to watch this again."

[01:06:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[01:06:40] June Diane Raphael: That's so awesome.

[01:06:40] Audience Member: It was so ... It, it's just such an important, nice movie.

[01:06:43] Paul Scheer: It, it, it is wild, wild to me that this movie was made and got as far as it did. Because, uh, there's so many different things. Like even in that scene, I, I know we haven't, like, talked about it too much, but that, uh, that, I don't wanna call it a sex scene, but the, the scene inside the last hole. Um- Like, I think that that's a really powerful moment.

[01:07:04] Jason Mantzoukas: It's super sweet.

[01:07:04] Paul Scheer: Like, when he's like-

[01:07:04] Jason Mantzoukas: When she says, "I don't know who I am."

[01:07:06] Paul Scheer: Yes. And he goes, "You are Billie Jean." I thought that, like a really, like-

[01:07:08] June Diane Raphael: I'm gonna cry.

[01:07:09] Paul Scheer: ... for that ... For again, this movie is very subtle in so many ways-

[01:07:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Like what it is to be a teenager-

[01:07:15] Paul Scheer: ... that it's shocking.

[01:07:16] Jason Mantzoukas: ... who becomes an icon just trying to do the right thing.

[01:07:20] Paul Scheer: And what is kind of even more interesting about it, uh, to a certain extent, is how it was- hated. This movie was hated when it came out. Like, like rip, ripped apart in reviews, and just, like, destroyed. And it's so interesting that, like, in a time where this is '80... whatever it is, uh, '85, it's Back to the Future, it's Indiana Jones, like all, so many things. This is a, kind of this lost movie, but it is feel, it does feel like one of those movies that, like, collectively we're like, "Nope, not ready for this story."

[01:07:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, it's also, it's interesting because the framework of it could look like, you mentioned Natural Born Killers earlier-

[01:07:56] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[01:07:56] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Badlands is an example. Uh, Bonnie and Clyde was mentioned. It could be a that, but it's not. These c- they are not on a gleeful shooting spree. They are not holding up places. They are rep- being-

[01:08:08] Paul Scheer: I would argue-

[01:08:09] Jason Mantzoukas: Framed for and represented as if that's what they are, but they are always trying to just end this by getting justice.

[01:08:16] Paul Scheer: I would argue, in a way, by having her not shoot him it's a more powerful movie because it actually makes it more complicated in an interesting way. Like, she is just protecting her brother who did commit the crime. And even though people don't know the exact relationship of all that sort of stuff, I mean, that's just a, it's a more complicated choice.

[01:08:36] June Diane Raphael: Again, the, yes. This is why... The fact that she is not extraordinary to, to extract Kenny from that home, which is a detour the movie kind of takes, there is nothing extraordinary about that act.

[01:08:49] Paul Scheer: Why are those kids ganging up? Those fucking kids.

[01:08:50] June Diane Raphael: What's that?

[01:08:50] Paul Scheer: They're all hanging around listening to this kid getting beat, and they're like, "Mm, we're not gonna do anything."

[01:08:53] June Diane Raphael: Because that is what she inspires.

[01:08:56] Paul Scheer: "We're not gonna do a goddamn thing."

[01:08:56] June Diane Raphael: That is what she inspires, that we're stronger together, that they become the threat.

[01:09:01] Paul Scheer: Well, if one kid's hanging out in a tree, it didn't seem like he's doing too much.

[01:09:03] Jason Mantzoukas: That's what kids used to do. You used to be out in the streets together running around. That's what it, that's what it was. There was just kids in the streets. Not on phones, not being watched.

[01:09:15] Paul Scheer: Racing scooters without helmets. Okay. Uh, hi, what's your name, what's your question?

[01:09:19] Audience Member: Uh, my name is Daniel. I think the movie also posits that the people buying all the stuff are not the real ones. The real ones are out there cutting the sleeves off of their wetsuits-

[01:09:29] June Diane Raphael: I think that's a great point.

[01:09:29] Audience Member: ... And supporting her. Also, I had that exact scooter growing up, and it was straight bitching.

[01:09:33] Paul Scheer: Wow. But can I a- let me ask you a question.

[01:09:38] June Diane Raphael: Can I just say something?

[01:09:39] Paul Scheer: How do you do that much damage to ... Like, what were they doing to the scooter?

[01:09:42] June Diane Raphael: Here's the thing that, ah. The scooter is such a charged object in this movie because they don't have a lot of money, and I remember the feeling of being a kid and wanting something so badly. And her knowing how important that thing was to him, it wasn't, it ... And this is why fair is fair. It's not about the scooter. It's about his sense of, of feeling he should have it, and that he deserves to have the scooter.

[01:10:11] Jason Mantzoukas: And it's the, not just that, but it is, as we were just reminded, it was bought with the pa- the money that was a result of his father passing away. The scooter-

[01:10:19] Paul Scheer: And if it wasn't broken-

[01:10:20] Jason Mantzoukas: is a representation of his lost father.

[01:10:22] Paul Scheer: And the dad does talk like KITT from Knight Rider sometimes-

[01:10:25] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[01:10:26] Paul Scheer: ... In the scooter. Which we don't hear because it's not really part of the main plot.

[01:10:29] Jason Mantzoukas: What's his name from St. Elsewhere does the voice. Yeah. Yes.

[01:10:31] Paul Scheer: "Oh, make sure- no, ouch. Ouch." "No, put me back. Bring me back to my son." Uh, yes, hi, you're-

[01:10:37] June Diane Raphael: That scooter was awesome.

[01:10:38] Paul Scheer: ... Uh, we, can we get our singers to come down to that corner? Yes, your name and your question.

[01:10:42] Audience Member: My name is Amy, and is this all just anti-capitalist propaganda?

[01:10:46] Paul Scheer: You know, this is so, I, I do believe that this movie is hiding some of these thoughts, 'cause th- they're burn ... I mean, at the end of the movie, they're burning the merch.

[01:10:55] June Diane Raphael: Oh, th- there's so much in this movie that's way ahead of its time.

[01:10:58] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:10:58] June Diane Raphael: There, it's-

[01:10:58] Paul Scheer: Hashtags.

[01:10:59] June Diane Raphael: ... no surprise to me that, that it wasn't received when it came out-

[01:11:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:11:03] June Diane Raphael: ... Critically, because it's, it is very progressive. It is ... And, and that basic idea, which by the way, I feel like we could learn from right now, that she doesn't have, she's, she doesn't resort to violence, but she is not an extraordinary human being. And she is very, very average in a beautiful way because she just continues to show up and try to do the right thing.

[01:11:29] Paul Scheer: And I wanna talk just for a second and say, like, Hubie, you know, look, he gets a lot of grief.

[01:11:34] Jason Mantzoukas: And listen-

[01:11:35] Paul Scheer: And, and sure, he fucked up the bike, but he, he's a kid. Kids'll be kids. And here's the thing. Hubie wa- Hubie-

[01:11:48] June Diane Raphael: Oh. Fair is fair.

[01:11:49] Paul Scheer: I just want-

[01:11:50] Audience Member: Fair is fair. Fair is fair.

[01:11:52] Paul Scheer: You're right, and that's why we need to celebrate his artistry of light bulbs in shells. We didn't ta- Like, he seems so, like yeah, he's a m- Like, "I gotta be a monster with my dickhead friends, but I really like putting light bulbs in shells." And when we see him-

[01:12:06] Jason Mantzoukas: He's a monster until the v- like, very end of the movie when he watches his dad-

[01:12:10] Paul Scheer: Oh, yeah.

[01:12:11] Jason Mantzoukas: ... Spiral out, and he kind of like slinks away like the meme of Homer Simpson going into the bushes. But like even up until the end at the beach, he's like, "It's her brother, it's not her."

[01:12:21] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[01:12:21] Jason Mantzoukas: And he runs out. And he's the one that gets him shot, basically. I think Hubie starts the movie a villain, ends the movie a villain. It's, he is really not redeemed until 40 years later during his Halloween.

[01:12:34] Paul Scheer: And then he really, like-

[01:12:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Now, I've not seen Hubie Halloween.

[01:12:38] Paul Scheer: It's touched on.

[01:12:38] Jason Mantzoukas: But I'm assuming-

[01:12:38] Paul Scheer: It's touched on.

[01:12:38] Jason Mantzoukas: ... it's a sequel to this movie. Following the character of Hubie.

[01:12:44] Paul Scheer: All right. Well, this is amazing. I love all the shirts. I love all the opinions. And you know, I still think that last scene where that bell guy comes in and fucking whips the shit out of Mr. Piat- I woulda, I woulda liked to see a little guy on guy fighting too. Like, you know, why not? She, you know, she doesn't need to do it, but this movie-

[01:13:01] Jason Mantzoukas: So this movie-

[01:13:02] June Diane Raphael: Who are you?

[01:13:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah. So this movie didn't have enough guys getting one over on the gals for you.

[01:13:10] Paul Scheer: I just woulda liked to see these n-

[01:13:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Nah, yeah. You'd like to see the men win.

[01:13:13] Paul Scheer: No, I would like to see the men be like, "Ah, the men never learn. They're still..." And 'cause she goes, "You shouldn't whip him. It's not about that." And then he's like, "Oh." And then he's like, "Fuck, I can't catch a break."

[01:13:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Man, I am, I am impressed by your commitment to Belt Dad-

[01:13:33] June Diane Raphael: Same. Same.

[01:13:35] Jason Mantzoukas: As your touchstone for this movie. Much like, um, um, Phoebe Cates' mom was your touchstone for Drop Dead Fred, Belt Dad. The unequivocal-

[01:13:43] June Diane Raphael: Belt Dad is a mega bitch.

[01:13:46] Paul Scheer: We're all belt Dad.

[01:13:48] Jason Mantzoukas: No, no. No, we're not. We're not all Belt Dad.

[01:13:54] Paul Scheer: All right. Obviously- ... some people have a different opinion, some people don't. But, uh, now it is time for second opinions.

[01:14:07] Audience Member: Hi, my name is Sabrina. I'm Amanda.

[01:14:09] Paul Scheer: Okay.

[01:14:10] Audience Member: I come home in the morning light. My brother says, "Come on, we gotta get back my bike." Oh, brother dear, we're not the fortunate ones. Girls just wanna kick nuts. Oh, girls just wanna kick nuts. We're on the run in the middle of the night. We got a hot hostage who won't put up a fight.

[01:14:31] Oh, brother dear, please put down that damn gun. Girls just want a haircut. Oh. Oh, girls just want a haircut. That's all they really want, haircuts.

[01:14:49] They wanna kick nuts. Yeah. Oh, girls just wanna get- Haircut ... a haircut. We watched- Wait, one more, one more. We watched this movie, was told that it sucked. But boy, there's no need for second opinions. Oh, Jason, dear, you kind of really fucked up. Oh, girls, they wanna kick nuts. Oh, girls just wanna kick nuts.

[01:15:12] Paul Scheer: Yes. Amazing. Amazing. Great job. Thank you both.

[01:15:16] Jason Mantzoukas: I have a question. I have a question. How did I fuck up?

[01:15:20] Paul Scheer: By picking it?

[01:15:20] Audience Member: We, we wrote this before the show. Um, we didn't think you guys would have anything negative to say about it, so-

[01:15:27] Paul Scheer: That's right.

[01:15:27] Audience Member: ... you didn't. We thought it shouldn't have been on the podcast, I guess.

[01:15:30] Paul Scheer: Right. Yeah, I get it. Yeah.

[01:15:31] Jason Mantzoukas: But shouldn't you have changed it to, "Paul, you really fucked up"?

[01:15:33] Paul Scheer: No. They're, they're saying this is not a movie for this show-

[01:15:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[01:15:38] Paul Scheer: ... so you fucked up by picking it.

[01:15:41] Jason Mantzoukas: My take isn't fucked up.

[01:15:42] Audience Member: Yeah. Correct. Correct.

[01:15:42] Jason Mantzoukas: It's just that the movie doesn't belong on this show.

[01:15:42] Audience Member: Yeah. Yes, yes, yes, yes.

[01:15:43] Jason Mantzoukas: But aren't you happy we watched it?

[01:15:44] Audience Member: Yes, yes, yes, yes.

[01:15:47] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, I feel really attacked.

[01:15:49] Audience Member: I'm, and we're sorry about that.

[01:15:52] Paul Scheer: Get used to it. All right, so- Legend of Billie Jean has-

[01:15:56] Jason Mantzoukas: But can I just say, all of those were amazing.

[01:15:59] Paul Scheer: Amazing.

[01:15:59] June Diane Raphael: That was incredible.

[01:16:01] Jason Mantzoukas: I thought for sure we would get all, uh, Pat Benatars.

[01:16:07] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[01:16:07] Jason Mantzoukas: Or I'm shocked none Michael Jackson Billie Jean.

[01:16:11] Paul Scheer: I was hoping for that too.

[01:16:11] Jason Mantzoukas: I also thought that would be what we had.

[01:16:13] Paul Scheer: By the way, after I thought it was about B- Billie Jean, the tennis, uh-

[01:16:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Billie Jean King?

[01:16:18] Paul Scheer: Billie Jean King, the tennis star.

[01:16:19] Jason Mantzoukas: That is incredible.

[01:16:20] Paul Scheer: Right? But now watch where I did the next split. I worked in a video store, and I was like, "Oh, is this a fucking Michael Jackson movie? I'm over Michael Jackson. I don't wanna watch that." And so I had two-

[01:16:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Even though Helen Slater on the cover looking red hot.

[01:16:32] Paul Scheer: It was, I was like, I thought it was like- I- ... oh, the music of Michael Jackson with this f- like, I, I- 'Cause it's like she was in that leather sh- I will say this. Like Eddie Murphy Delirious.

[01:16:39] Jason Mantzoukas: Had you seen this movie as a child-

[01:16:41] Paul Scheer: Oh, I'd fucking love it.

[01:16:41] Jason Mantzoukas: ... you would be obsessed with it the way that I am.

[01:16:44] Paul Scheer: I mean, here's what I'm gonna tell you. These are the movies that I loved as a kid, 100%. Uh, I just avoided it 'cause of the title.

[01:16:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah, yeah.

[01:16:51] Paul Scheer: And I will say this, the director did try to change the title. He's like, "That Michael Jackson song's pretty popular."

[01:16:57] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.

[01:16:58] Paul Scheer: "Let's call it something, like, different than Billie Jean." And the studio's like, "What? Are you kidding? We're bigger than Michael Jackson." And they did not, did not change it. It is weird to have two Billie Jeans in-

[01:17:10] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I do agree with that.

[01:17:12] Paul Scheer: ... Current popular culture. All right. So, uh, 6,881 total reviews. 87% are five star.

[01:17:22] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:17:23] Paul Scheer: Now, nor- 0% are one star. Now normally you would say like, "Well, these can't be funny." Watch out, they're great. They are great. In 2011, um, P or T Review wrote,

[01:17:37] "Having watched this twice already, I borrowed it from a friend, I loved it equally both times. Definitely one that will be in my collection. As a pioneer for equality, this movie was ahead of its time. But my question is, why did Pat Benatar hate it, and why did it flop in theaters? Everyone seems to have an opinion about this film, some good, some bad. Oh, well, another film that critics didn't like for reasons that most audiences shouldn't care less about. Yes, I consider myself a freelance critic. But even- "I'm not always right, but I am entitled to my opinion even when others don't agree. Now, I won't go into detail about the plot. Everyone has done plenty of that. Suffice it to say, though hardly original, it's still well acted, especially by Helen Slater as Billie Jean, and enjoyable, and sends a message for people who have been bullied or pushed around or just wanna stand up for themselves. Can't wait to own it. Five stars."

[01:18:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow.

[01:18:43] Paul Scheer: "Why did Pat Benatar hate this film?"

[01:18:47] Jim Mason writes, this is one of my favorites, maybe in all the history of the show. Jim Mason writes, uh, in 2022, title: "Love this movie for personal reasons."

[01:19:04] June Diane Raphael: 'Cause he usually likes movies for professional reasons.

[01:19:06] Paul Scheer: Yes. And Jim goes on to say,

[01:19:11] "This film was shot in Corpus Christi, Texas, my favorite place in the world. My wife and I were 30 and 31 years old and working for a boat dealership. Some of our boats were used for background items."

[01:19:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[01:19:27] Paul Scheer: "It was the best time of my life sailing, racing, and fishing for a living. Couldn't wait to get to work each morning. For almost 19 years, couldn't get to work fast enough. It was beyond beautiful. Five stars."

[01:19:49] Jason Mantzoukas: I love when people leave in one of these reviews, like an autobiographical-

[01:19:55] June Diane Raphael: It's so fascinating

[01:19:56] Jason Mantzoukas: ... diary entry about themselves. It's an, it's a review of a movie on Amazon. It's like, "When I was 31 and my wife was..." What?

[01:20:05] Paul Scheer: Why, I mean, I'm happy that-

[01:20:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Good movie, bad movie, that's what we're doing here. It's not about you.

[01:20:10] Paul Scheer: Yeah, I'm not looking for reviews of Corpus Christi. Um, this is an odd one.

[01:20:15] Jason Mantzoukas: One star.

[01:20:17] Paul Scheer: Max, uh, wrote this in 2018, titles it Fair is Fair.

[01:20:22] "This was strictly an Illuminati movie to encourage the single androgynous male-female young person. Other things in this movie as well, such as the quasi-Satanist candle ceremony at the creepy dude's mansion about at the halfway mark, yet still a cult classic. Also, the amount of times a male got racked in the nuts was to signify the taming and/or destruction of the white male penis. Strictly a movie to promote an agenda from those who crave power and debauchery. Still a cult classic." Five stars, Fair is Fair.

[01:21:05] June Diane Raphael: Fair is fair.

[01:21:07] Paul Scheer: Fair is fair. And finally, we'll end on Spock Jenkins, who writes, "It was a movie. I watched it on my TV. Five stars. "

[01:21:17] Title: "A Movie."

[01:21:23] Jason Mantzoukas: I do wanna say even though, 'cause it was mentioned in those and you mentioned it earlier, it is a shame that Pat Benatar said it was a bad movie because I, A, I think it's an incredible movie, and B, the song Invincible, the Pat Benatar song Invincible, not only is it so iconically used in the movie, it is teased throughout in an instrumental form.

[01:21:42] And then the payoff of it starting to play was a fucking orgasm of audio beauty. It's a great song that is like, like threaded throughout, and then when it lands and it plays in full, unreal. Great. The whole soundtrack, dynamite.

[01:21:59] Paul Scheer: Um, here's where I wanna just give you some interesting side notes right, about the, about the film. The original writers of this movie, uh, Mark Rosenthal and Lawrence Konner, are mad at this movie. Their script was taken by the director, Matthew Robbins, and Matthew Robbins took somebody who was, um, a writer, and I'm forgetting that writer's name, but, uh, was, went through like the McCarthy hearings, right? So he really-

[01:22:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Like a blacklisted writer?

[01:22:25] Paul Scheer: Blacklisted writer. Took, and I think the way that Matthew Robbins describes it, really brought that into it, feeling an outcast, feeling like he didn't have power, feeling like he was in a system, but he couldn't act on a system. Then that was like this rewrite of the movie. Uh, Mark and Lawrence have written essays on how they-

[01:22:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Do, do, what is the orig- Are you gonna tell? What is-

[01:22:43] Paul Scheer: Well, I'm gonna tell you. Yeah.

[01:22:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay.

[01:22:44] Paul Scheer: So the original, uh, titles were Fair Is Fair or Legend, and Legend was abandoned because Tom Cruise had a movie c- Legend coming out.

[01:22:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.

[01:22:52] Paul Scheer: But it was an interesting thing because, and I have it right here, the feminist themes were not there at all. As a matter of fact, there were many gratuitous, uh, nudity scenes. Uh, the movie o-

[01:23:03] Jason Mantzoukas: There wasn't feminist themes in the two guys that wrote the movie?

[01:23:05] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[01:23:06] Jason Mantzoukas: From the, from the movie written by the two guys?

[01:23:07] Paul Scheer: Although, but Matthew Robinson and the other man who wrote the movie-

[01:23:10] Jason Mantzoukas: Okay, okay.

[01:23:10] Paul Scheer: ... Uh, they were two men as well. Uh, although, uh, Helen Slater has said that Matthew Robinson has a, is very in touch with that side of himself, uh, and br- brought a lot from that. Uh, but so it said, "Contained many scenes of female nudity, and, uh, Putter and Ophelia are described as typical, generic teen beauties." Uh, that's one of the, that's from the script. The early versions of the script open with Billie Jean topless in her bedroom. Um, they go skiing-

[01:23:35] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, I don't, I'm not mad at it.

[01:23:36] Paul Scheer: Yeah. Binx, Binx and her are skinny-dipping. Billie Jean takes off her clothes to go swimming in that pool. There's a lot of swimming nude in the movie. There's more sex scenes in the movie.

[01:23:48] But it was all based on this, which I thought was really interesting. This is based on Phoolan Devi, an Indian icon. So after being married off at the age of 11 and being sexually abused by various people, she joined a gang of armed gang robbers, and those gang robbers, they robbed, like, rich villages and held up trains and vehicles.

[01:24:07] And then when she, uh ... And then she basically evaded capture and, and then she became this, like, kinda Robin Hood figure and an eventual member of Indian Parliament. So that is-

[01:24:17] Jason Mantzoukas: You know what?

[01:24:17] Paul Scheer: So it is based in some truth. I mean, very far removed- ... in, you know. But it was at least based on this, uh, this amazing, uh, Phoolan Devi.

[01:24:28] Uh, so I thought that was really interesting.

[01:24:31] Jason Mantzoukas: That's cool.

[01:24:31] Paul Scheer: Um, all right. Final thoughts. Final thoughts. Anything we didn't bring up? Anything- Would you recommend this movie? Well, I mean, should they even ask that?

[01:24:36] Jason Mantzoukas: Boy, this, I mean, uh, it just, like, a 10 out of 10 for me. This is-

[01:24:41] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:24:42] Jason Mantzoukas: ... In, in the 15 years, 16 years we've been doing this show, there are certain movies, uh, Face/Off, Con Air, uh, uh, the movies that, to me, are not the movies we typically do because we're here being like, "This is a problem, that's a problem, this is a problem," that this is just a gangbusters, absolute, stone-cold classic. I loved this top to bottom. Would I recommend it? I would recommend everybody watch it once a year.

[01:25:09] Paul Scheer: Wow.

[01:25:09] June Diane Raphael: Yeah. I didn't know it was this good.

[01:25:10] Paul Scheer: What, what time of year?

[01:25:12] Jason Mantzoukas: This is a summer movie.

[01:25:12] Paul Scheer: What time of year?

[01:25:15] Jason Mantzoukas: All right, summer movie.

[01:25:15] June Diane Raphael: It is. It is.

[01:25:15] Jason Mantzoukas: We're in a heat wave right now. Watch this movie.

[01:25:19] June Diane Raphael: It's funny 'cause I, I think that, yeah, I'm not, I'm not taking the point of view tonight of like, oh, this is a great movie for all the movies we watch.

[01:25:27] It's like, no, this is an important movie. I loved it so much. The other movie I felt this strongly about was Drop Dead Fred.

[01:25:33] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:25:33] June Diane Raphael: This is a really wonderful movie. I mean, I'm just thinking about the scene where she's talking to her mom through the video and, like, that is ... She's talking to her, like, mother to mother. There's no sense of like, "Oh, I know we're children and I'm away." It's like, "Mom, Mom you, Mom me, don't worry. We've got it." Like, it's, she has the energy of a single mom, which granted many young teenage girls did at that time, but it was just, it was just so special. I loved it so much.

[01:26:02] Jason Mantzoukas: And I don't know if part of my, uh, like, like, obsession and fascination with it is that it is a representation of contemporary for me being this, this age.

[01:26:13] Paul Scheer: But can I ask you a question? Like, because this, like- This is a time where I grew up in, like, movies like this. But I did not live a life like this, but yet it was like, "That's what I should be doing." Like, were you hanging out, like, in trees like that? As like in- ... in waiting for, uh-

[01:26:29] June Diane Raphael: In trees.

[01:26:29] Paul Scheer: ... people to come by and, and scoop you up?

[01:26:31] June Diane Raphael: In trees.

[01:26:32] Jason Mantzoukas: Not, I wasn't waiting around in trees, but like-

[01:26:34] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, you were writing, you were writing checks for different-

[01:26:37] Jason Mantzoukas: I was-

[01:26:38] June Diane Raphael: ... utilities and.

[01:26:38] Jason Mantzoukas: I was absolutely writing checks. Once I was a stock boy at age 12 at the village store.

[01:26:45] June Diane Raphael: Got it. So, like, you wanted a bag of chips and, like, maybe some gum.

[01:26:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Boom.

[01:26:47] June Diane Raphael: That's a check.

[01:26:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Putting a note in the notes section, "Chips." Brr. Um, yeah. Oh, I'm out in these streets, I'm still writing checks.

[01:27:01] June Diane Raphael: Wow. No, I truly like.

[01:27:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Still got that condom.

[01:27:03] June Diane Raphael: I wanna, I wanna host-

[01:27:04] Jason Mantzoukas: Someday.

[01:27:05] June Diane Raphael: ... I wanna host a screening of this movie. I wanna see it with an audience. Like, I wanna watch it, you know, a couple times a year. I didn't know we were just gonna watch our favorite movies.

[01:27:17] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:27:17] June Diane Raphael: 'Cause I guess Anne of Green Gables is next.

[01:27:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh. Oh. I mean, I, I, we are kindred spirits.

[01:27:24] June Diane Raphael: Thank you.

[01:27:25] Jason Mantzoukas: That's an Anne of Green Gables reference.

[01:27:26] June Diane Raphael: It is a, yes, it is a deez nut.

[01:27:27] Jason Mantzoukas: You guys suck.

[01:27:30] Paul Scheer: We don't normally, uh, do this, but we, uh, do have a special guest tonight. Belt Dad, come on out.

[01:27:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Belt Dad?

[01:27:37] Paul Scheer: And he's gonna hit all, gonna give you all a little taste of your own medicine.

[01:27:41] Jason Mantzoukas: Why do I feel like, why do I feel like before I know it, somehow we're gonna have a Belt Dad T-shirt?

[01:27:48] Paul Scheer: I'd rather have no dad than belt dad or belt dad th- I'd rather have a belt dad than no dad.

[01:27:54] Jason Mantzoukas: Snow dad, snow dad better than no belt dad? I don't know. Something in here.

[01:27:58] Paul Scheer: Well, I have a feeling because people have amazing merch already out there that there probably isn't Billie Jean merch. We will look and see-

[01:28:04] June Diane Raphael: I need it.

[01:28:05] Paul Scheer: ... where we can kind of figure out our own spot in this world so we're not, or we're not profiteering. Or we can maybe have a shirt that says Pat Benatar is wrong.

[01:28:13] Jason Mantzoukas: I, yes. Oh, I love that. I-

[01:28:15] June Diane Raphael: I personally go, I will be on Etsy tonight, and I will be purchasing-

[01:28:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, I'm certain it's there.

[01:28:20] June Diane Raphael: I will be purchasing t- that, that T-shirt and probably the hat.

[01:28:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, do, did the, the do- the duo of women who sang with those Billie Jean shirts-

[01:28:28] June Diane Raphael: Those homemade?

[01:28:29] Jason Mantzoukas: ... did you make or did you buy them?

[01:28:31] Audience Member: Um, we made them.

[01:28:31] Jason Mantzoukas: You made them. Okay.

[01:28:32] June Diane Raphael: Made them.

[01:28:32] Paul Scheer: Wow.

[01:28:32] June Diane Raphael: Do you have an Etsy store?

[01:28:33] Audience Member: No. No.

[01:28:35] Jason Mantzoukas: You're about to be rich. Um, here is-

[01:28:38] Paul Scheer: But here, you know what we could do? Maybe if Molly can, uh, get a picture of them, we can make you the artists of this shirt, and then we can-

[01:28:45] June Diane Raphael: Let's do it

[01:28:45] Paul Scheer: ... then you'll get a cut of that profit.

[01:28:47] June Diane Raphael: Perfect.

[01:28:47] Paul Scheer: Uh, and then we can sell the shirts.

[01:28:48] Jason Mantzoukas: I mean, the reality is this movie-

[01:28:51] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[01:28:51] Jason Mantzoukas: ... And I felt like this with Drop Dead Fred, this movie is so genuinely fantastic, and I mean it when I say. I've had a long week, but I sobbed through so much of this movie.

[01:29:01] June Diane Raphael: I did too, Jason.

[01:29:01] Jason Mantzoukas: There is something about a movie that is about kids alone off on their own trying to right the wrongs that adults are doing to them-

[01:29:11] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[01:29:11] Jason Mantzoukas: ... that just hits me right in the heart, and I was sobbing throughout. From Underground Railroad until the end-

[01:29:19] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:29:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I was like, "Game over."

[01:29:21] June Diane Raphael: Same.

[01:29:21] Jason Mantzoukas: I was doing, I was going, "Yes!"

[01:29:24] June Diane Raphael: Same.

[01:29:24] Jason Mantzoukas: I was standing, I'm 53 years old.

[01:29:27] June Diane Raphael: And by the way, by the way, speaking of the Underground Railroad, like, it didn't, I didn't understand where she was going. It seemed like maybe she was going in a circle.

[01:29:35] Jason Mantzoukas: I feel like she was.

[01:29:35] Paul Scheer: And I was fine with that. I feel like she never got more than 25 miles away from where the movie started.

[01:29:41] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, I was fine with that.

[01:29:41] Jason Mantzoukas: I think that's, I think that's absolutely right. Yeah.

[01:29:43] June Diane Raphael: Totally fine with that.

[01:29:44] Jason Mantzoukas: I think that, I think she never leaves Corpus Christi.

[01:29:46] June Diane Raphael: Yeah.

[01:29:46] Paul Scheer: No.

[01:29:47] Jason Mantzoukas: The greater Corpus christi area.

[01:29:49] June Diane Raphael: Fine by me. Fine by me.

[01:29:49] Paul Scheer: No way.

[01:29:49] June Diane Raphael: And by the way, I, if you'll notice, I think-

[01:29:51] Paul Scheer: She's in that mini golf fucking place for the majority of the... Like, her home base is the mini golf place.

[01:29:56] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[01:29:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Which I also loved-

[01:29:57] Paul Scheer: Loved it.

[01:29:57] Jason Mantzoukas: ... as a where the kids would go, the abandoned mini golf place.

[01:30:00] Paul Scheer: And if you wanna go visit it's now an aquarium.

[01:30:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, is it really?

[01:30:03] Paul Scheer: Yeah.

[01:30:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, that's funny.

[01:30:04] Paul Scheer: Um, but.

[01:30:05] June Diane Raphael: I didn't take a single note. I sta- maybe I took two, and then I just closed-

[01:30:08] Paul Scheer: I did walk by you when you were watching it, and I just saw the, the notebook far away from you.

[01:30:12] June Diane Raphael: I closed it and I put it down, and I just watched it.

[01:30:16] Jason Mantzoukas: I, I did that for a long time.

[01:30:18] June Diane Raphael: Yeah. I was like, I- Just, just like I can't-

[01:30:19] Jason Mantzoukas: I caught myself, and I was like, I haven't taken a note in a while 'cause I'm just loving this.

[01:30:22] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, I just have to enjoy this.

[01:30:24] Paul Scheer: I took a lot.

[01:30:24] Jason Mantzoukas: My only disappointment in- My only disappointment in you, the audience, is that no one showed up with a Billie Jean haircut. I really, I really was sure somebody was gonna be like, "I did it."

[01:30:41] Paul Scheer: I'm, and I will say I'm proud of you.

[01:30:42] Jason Mantzoukas: I would've proposed.

[01:30:43] Paul Scheer: I, I, um, well, uh, June, Jason, um, anything you wanna promote? June.

[01:30:51] June Diane Raphael: Well, Elle is on, uh, Prime Video. All the episodes are streaming. It's a really sweet show.

[01:30:57] Paul Scheer: I love that. Now, do you think that your character would've watched Billie Jean, The Legend of Billie Jean?

[01:31:02] June Diane Raphael: Oh, that's a great question. Yeah, but I don't know that she would've liked it-

[01:31:07] Paul Scheer: Interesting

[01:31:07] June Diane Raphael: ... as much as, yeah.

[01:31:08] Paul Scheer: She would've been on that, that other side. She would've been-

[01:31:10] June Diane Raphael: I, she's not on your side.

[01:31:13] Paul Scheer: Belt Dad side.

[01:31:13] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, no. No, no, no. I don't think she would've felt as strongly as I do.

[01:31:18] Paul Scheer: Okay. Jason, anything you wanna promote?

[01:31:20] Jason Mantzoukas: Um, I'll promote, um, uh, this summer we did a 10th anniversary of the Chris Gethard-

[01:31:25] Paul Scheer: Yes.

[01:31:25] Jason Mantzoukas: ... uh, One Man's Trash episode. That, um, that I believe is gonna be released somehow soon.

[01:31:31] Paul Scheer: It is, is being edited right now.

[01:31:33] Jason Mantzoukas: If it's not already.

[01:31:33] Paul Scheer: Yeah, I think it's being edited right now, and-

[01:31:34] Jason Mantzoukas: But if you've never seen it, it's on YouTube. Paul and I-

[01:31:37] June Diane Raphael: So funny.

[01:31:37] Jason Mantzoukas: ... are guests on the Chris Gethard Show. It is one of the best episodes of television ever, I think. So-

[01:31:43] Paul Scheer: So much fun.

[01:31:43] Jason Mantzoukas: ... go watch that. And I'm still promoting Taskmaster Season 19, just 'cause. I'm locked in, everybody. I'm locked in.

[01:31:51] Paul Scheer: I, uh, wanna let everybody know that I am gonna be on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

[01:31:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Whoa.

[01:31:57] Paul Scheer: Um, with, uh, Rob Huebel. Uh, and, uh, and it's, uh, it-

[01:32:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Wait, as a team?

[01:32:04] Paul Scheer: Uh, it's team now.

[01:32:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Or against each other?

[01:32:05] Paul Scheer: No, it's, it's team now, so it's, like, Larry David and Cazzy David, and it was... Everybody is really fun pairs. Rob and I, of course, have, uh, Dark Web every Monday on YouTube. Check it out if you've not checked it out yet.

[01:32:16] Alright, so this is a Thank God It Got Made. Thank you, everybody, for coming out here to Largo. Thank you to our amazing staff. We love being at Largo. Our producer, Scott Sonne and Molly reynolds, our entire production team for putting this show together.

[01:32:31] Jason Mantzoukas: Eat shit!

[01:32:34] Paul Scheer: Okay, whether you are Team Billie Jean or Team Belt Dad, the only team to be, thank you so much for listening.

[01:32:40] We're doing something special this week. We have two special T-shirts for this episode that were designed by one of our second opinion song singers. That's right, Sabrina designed one that says, "Billie Jean," and the other one says, "Pat Benatar was wrong." Now, you can snag both of these shirts by clicking the merch link at HDTGM.com, and all proceeds from these shirts will go to Sabrina.

[01:33:04] Now, if you're in Los Angeles in October and wanna see June and I live doing a improvised multi-cam sitcom, uh, created by Marta Kauffman, the creator of Friends, uh, we have tickets available for you at that same link, HDTGM.com. Just click there and tell us what dates you can come see the show. It is going to be an absolute blast.

[01:33:26] Dinosaur Improv will be back at Largo on September 11th. And if you are a fan of trivia, check me and Rob Huebel out on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire on Hulu. And you can watch the 10th anniversary of Chris Gethard's One Man Trash anniversary show that Jason and I did in New York just a few months ago, also on YouTube.

[01:33:48] And if you're on YouTube, why don't you check out The Dark Web? We have so many good things. But you know what? We know that you are a super fan, and you have a lot to say, so if you have a correction or an omission from this episode about Billie Jean, you can leave us a voicemail by going to SpeakPipe.com/HDTGM, or write to us on our Discord at Discord.gg/HDTGM.

[01:34:07] We are also still accepting corrections and omissions for our xXx episode, as we get ready to launch a supersized Last Looks. We love being at Largo. Our pals, Flanney, Griffey, and Skills in the booth are just the best. If you're ever in LA, come support Largo. And a big thank you to our recording engineer, Rich Garcia, who's coming out to do these live shows with us.

[01:34:32] Remember, if you listen to us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, please make sure you are subscribed into our feed and have automatic downloads turned on in the show settings. It helps us, and we appreciate it. Always make sure you're telling people about the show, and check out our Instagram page, where you can watch videos from our live show.

[01:34:48] And lastly, I have to give a huge thank you to our behind-the-scenes team. I'm talking about our producer, Scott Sonne and Molly Reynolds, our engineer, Casey Holford, and our social media manager, Zoe Applebaum, as well as our intern, Emily Gelbard. We will forever be thankful to the one and only Avaryl Halley.

[01:35:03] And you know what, people? That's all I got. I'll see you next week on Last Looks. Bye for now.
